ValerieC (keyboardkat) | 23 comments I was recently editing a group of books that are in more than one series. There are books from several different authors in this collection, but additionally, each author's books are added to individual series on their own pages. Some books have the collection link as the prominant series link, and some books show the individual series as the prominant series link.

Aside from what a mess this is, I keep running into this type of thing, but can't find the info in the Librarian Manual that explains how this should be added in the titles.

I have seen this:
Book Name: Subtitle (Series One, #1, Series Two, #1)

This:
Book Name: Subtitle (Series One, #1) (Series Two, #1)

This:
Book Name: Subtitle (Series One, #1: Series Two, #1)

What's the proper format? Should only the Primary numbered series be mentioned?

Thanks in advance. I'm pretty new and mostly edit titles, descriptions, etc. but I have recently found that there are a gazillion places where series have to be added.

Renske | 12220 comments If it is anthology with stories belonging to several series, I would choose to not adding the series names to the title as it looks easily very cluttered, but that is my personal preference.

ValerieC (keyboardkat) | 23 comments Thank you for your answer, but that isn't what I was asking.
Possibly 'collection' was misleading (my apologies).

There is a 'series' called 'The Motorcycle Clubs'
https://www.goodreads.com/series/1373...

This series has 4 authors that contribute to the general idea of writing MC novellas for readers who are short on time, similar to a serial, but somewhat longer.

Each writer has their own MC storyline going, and each has their books grouped into a series for those books (in addition to The Motorcycle Clubs).

Here is an example book...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

If you look on the book's edit page, you can see that both series are on the title line. I have seen quite a few books done in this configuration and others (see my first message).
https://www.goodreads.com/book/edit/2...

Anyway, my basic question is, what is the GR protocol for series in the title when the book belongs to more than one series?

I have also seen books that are in one series, but crossover as maybe a first book in a new series, so they are listed in both. Same question, though.

Krazykiwi | 1767 comments Personally I prefer them all in one set of parentheses, so the whole ugly mess is replaced with the live series link on the book page. I would use a semicolon between, it seems semantically the most correct to me.

ValerieC (keyboardkat) | 23 comments Krazykiwi - That seems the most logical to me, too, and would look 'neater' on the feed page where the gray series links don't show unless the series is added to the title line.

I guess I will do that unless someone can point me to an official edict, lol. I have seen many variations of this and it would help to know what to do from the Librarian Manual series page.

Thanks for the help.

Leilin (leilinbooks) | 1788 comments Ok, so we have all been using the
Book Name: Subtitle (Series One, #1; Series Two, #1)
format...

But:
ValerieC wrote: "Krazykiwi - That seems the most logical to me, too, and would look 'neater' on the feed page where the gray series links don't show unless the series is added to the title line."

Well it doesn't anyway, right? I just used the example provided above (https://www.goodreads.com/book/edit/2...) and tried all formats you proposed: nothing made both series appear as the grey links, on the book page, below the title (only the first series listed in the title field ever appear as such).
Is that new? I do think I have seen Goodreads books with multiple series links, before.... no?

If someone could enlighten me, I'd appreciate it a lot!

Emily | 17487 comments Only the series set as primary (first in the list) will show in gray.

Series in the title line no longer correlates in this way with the series in gray, which is one reason it's best to start new threads with new questions rather than reviving very old ones.

message 8: by Leilin (new)

Leilin (leilinbooks) | 1788 comments Sorry, I bumped the old thread because I reused the same example (and also because I saw nothing more recent on the subject).

So basically, whatever we write in the title field does not matter. Grey series link will appear from first (main) series listed in the "Work Settings" section of the edit page... correct?
(if so, are we to still write series in title at all then?)

message 9: by Emily (last edited Nov 26, 2020 06:54PM) (new)

Emily | 17487 comments It's ok. :) Yes it will be whatever is #1. We never remove series information from the title field, but adding it from scratch is optional. I err on the side of adding it.

Correct, though I would still add the main series to the title just for the record. It makes it easier to navigate if authors start adding more books to the "universe" series with different individual series.

message 11: by Leilin (new)

Leilin (leilinbooks) | 1788 comments Ok, It makes sense: I'll stay on the over-cautious side and probably add everything in the title when doing it myself - and will make sure that at least the main series is included, if nothing else, then.

Thank you both! This clarification is very helpful! :)
