Booker Hit List - Girish and Vimal (feat Syl and Srividya)
Started Disgrace...
Finished Chapter 1.
As of now, going good, though the 52 year old man is slightly repellent.

Finished Disgrace. I liked the writing, the intent and the philosophy - the 'story' in itself is not really likeable.
I did not understand Lucy either.. I understand David being a idiot making it about him, but then, does it make sense?

@Vimal: Once you are done, let us decide what we will pick up next. Disgrace was a mixed bag for me.
Books I have an eye on:
1. A Brief History of Seven Killings
2. The Testament of Mary
3. England, England
4. Such a Long Journey
5. The Children's Book
Let me know which captured your interest the most (or anything else also is fine)
@Syl, Sri, others: Feel free to suggest which you want to join in as well

Brief history is supposed to be a drag. Children's book in my TBR. Rest....no idea.
Such a long journey already completed.

Look up the other 2 too.. England England is supposed to be a comedy. Testament of Mary is highly acclaimed (near Novella) of Mary's view of the entire Jesus story.

Am ok with any of these 5 Girish. Think #2 and #5 combined is doable in Feb. Planning to complete Disgrace and Hot Milk in Jan, and probably Idiot too.
Cool.. Let's pick up Testament of Mary in first half of feb and then continue with The Children's book.
Jan can be managed with so many books in the lineup :) Might pick up a Barnes this month.

Starting Testament of Mary which seems to be a surprisingly small book!
Ini, Em - Do let me know when you joining in.. Vimal may be taking a break due to work pressure.

Closing the loop on The Testament of Mary
Short read. Mostly 4 and 5 stars from Em, Ini and me. Not really a buddy read since most finished it in single sitting!
Let's plan the next one slightly later this month.

We never did discuss testament here .
Must be the read with shortest discussion.
To be honest...didn't like it much. Mary's voice was lethargic and the Jesus.i encountered seemed more of a truant son who doesn't bother about his mother, and who is slightly deluded into believing he is son of God, whereas Mary doesn't feel so.
Though Mary doesn't outright say so, she implies that Jesus is just ordinary.

I remembered 'Why let facts come in the way of a good fiction?' line when I was reading how the Gospel writers were pushing.
And I agree to an extent that the maternal tone was missing. Probably we are stereotyping mothers as caring, but the Mary in the story is more in regret of not showing the affection than anything.
Jesus, I thought the author played it safe. Did not want to risk a ban I guess since he doesn't say a single thing against. Leaves him an enigma.

Yes Manju, you can suggest :) @Ini, you too!
I am fine with the Holiday.
Have read the English Patient - did not like it. Too verbose and I found it too show off over nothing.

Just about got the time to pick up Holiday.
@Smi : Hope I'm not too late :P
@ Ini, Manju, Vimal, Sri, Gorab : Join in if you have time
Joint Booker Winner of 1974
"Edwin Fisher is on holiday at the English seaside - but this revisiting of childhood haunts is no ordinary holiday. Edwin is seeking to understand the failure of his marriage to Meg, but it turns out that her parents are staying at the same resort - whether by accident or design - and are keen to patch up the relationship. As the past and his enigmatic wife loom larger, deeper truths emerge and the perspective shifts in unexpected ways"

Reached 15%. Liked the first meeting between Edward and Meg.
Looks like it's going to one of those typical bookers with a lot of character depth and slow plot building.

Holiday
Girish and I are reading this one..
Am 20% through .. and liking the slow paced descriptions of places and people.
Edwin is a man who has left his crotchety wife and is recovering himself at a small seaside holiday town. He is fine to take it easy spending days lazily observing people, when he encounters his in laws there.
At 20% am loving the book. Let me read ahead
Though Stanley Middleton has written nearly 50 books, this is my first attempt at reading one, and to be frank, I hadn;t heard of the author until Girish mentioned him.

Actually I heard of the book from you! :O At 33%, the book is brilliant in flashes. Slowly, it is getting denser.
I already don't like Edwin's in-laws and parents..

Am not overtly fond of any of the characters encountered so far, including Edwin, though he is by far the likeable of the lot, if ever one has to be chosen.

At 68% and to be honest, I am in love with the book! It's so effortlessly insightful into marriage and holiday.
"Nature is fine, but human nature is finer"
"Never sleep on a quarrel, Edwin. Apologise, even if you think you're in the right. That's good advice now"
Curious where this is all leading...
Aside, tough to imagine Holidays before mobile phones where people talked to other people!

I have to make progress. Still at 25 %. Reading 3 I teresting books makes one confused as to which to concentrate upon. :/
At chapter 6...domesticity in all its ugly violence.
I wonder how Meg turned out to be like this malevolent zombie. .
I wonder how Meg turned out to be like this malevolent zombie. .
At 60% it is really gripping. Meg is one worthy opponent in the marriage arena. Am waiting to read further to know how the book exactly ends.
