Karen Scarpulla author of Walking Toward the Light gives us her thoughts on crowdfunding.

What made you decide to crowdfund for your project?

I had heard about crowdfunding as a way to help offset initial publishing costs. However, many organizations only fund your project if you meet your funding goal. I was pleased to see that Pubslush did not use this tactic. For me, I was more interested in gauging if my target audience was indeed my target audience by watching the demographics of my funders. This also allowed me to grow me audience in advance of publishing my book, to create buzz and credibility for the book.

What were you able to achieve with your campaign dollars?

I was able to pay for some of the editing costs for my book. The editing process can be very costly and I was hoping to raise enough money to offset some of these costs.

What did you learn about yourself or the world through this process?
Karen Scarpulla

The process gave me a boost of confidence by reaching my funding goal. Moreover, I have followed other crowdfunding projects as well and I believe crowdfunding is a great way for people to get involved in supporting the arts (books, movies, documentaries, etc) that they feel are meaningful. Sometimes the best ideas don't follow the mainstream and crowdfunding provides an opportunity for unique and "out of the box" ideas to receive support.

How do you see crowdfunding fitting into the publishing process, now and in the future?

I would recommend crowdfunding for any new author. Crowdfunding will continue to grow as a tool for authors and film makers to fund projects that just may change the world or at the very least expand our views.
