SOLVED. House with doors to different worlds/time periods [s]

This is a book I read in middle school and I believe it is the first in a series of books about this family and their home. A family moved into an old house that the father grew up in. Upstairs there are rooms to different worlds/time periods. The kids accidentally go into these new worlds and have to escape. Some of these worlds were: coliseum, desert, etc. The father had taken his family back to the house because his mom had gone into a world and never returned. The characters from these other worlds can enter the house through these doorways as well and the family has to take many precautions such as boarding up the doors. I only remember these bits and pieces (some may be parts of other books I the series), but any help would be appreciated!!

What years would you have been in middle school? Your book sounds similar, but not identical, to 100 Cupboards. You might consider checking that one out to see. It is part of a series and I have only read it, not the rest of the series, so it's possible some of the other things you describe happened in the other books.
