Cry: Das Echolot. Barbarossa '41. Ein kollektives Tagebuch. because it is "a collective diary" that the author compiled and edited from the diaries of dozens of people in 1941. While I read it, I was especially taken in by the words of a teenage boy who wrote vividly of his troubles during the siege of Leningrad, about his hunger and his struggles to find food for his little brother and his mom. Then suddenly his reports stopped appearing in the compilations; I looked him up in the index, and realized that he had died.
sad: The Bluest Eye reading about Pecola and getting to know why and how she never got the chance to learn to love herself made me incredibly sad.
Lets also bring in something positive to counterbalance this sadness!
A book that made you laugh hard: Nausea when I understood the significance of the autodidact having to leave the library I couldn't stop laughing for days.
