Overall I thought this was an okay read, it was a fast read for sure! But I felt that some of the topics weren't discussed very well and that the book just seemed to exist to be horrific. I guess that's what the point really was? I've never been in this experience before and I can't say how accurate it was or wasn't. I felt bad for most of the characters like autumn in the end, when she's no longer able to dance... and how Matt died!! I was devastated. But the part that made me question things was how autumn was literally sympathetic to him. I don't get it at all. Also!! When Claire and Chris kissed. NOT THE TIME?

(view spoiler)[I don't think it's a book I'll remember and think about for too long - to be honest, it's rather forgettable, but it was still enjoyable and I wouldn't say that I regret reading it. Still, many aspects of the story could have been done better. The characters could have been more diverse - in terms of their character, becuase they all seemed pretty flat to me. The victims were angels, the shooter was plain evil - and that's it. I'd say that Autumn was the best character, or at least the one that I liked the most. Maybe it's just my opinion. Claire, on the other hand, seemed completely devoid of any rememberable features.
But I still think the character that should have been improved the most was Tyler. The shooter seemed to lack a motive - and killing a bunch of people is not something you just decide to do on the spot, without any reason. He also seemed awfully superficial because of because of his theatrical behaviour.
I liked how some things weren't revealed straight away, like the nature of the relationship between Autumn and Sylv or what Tyler has done to Sylvia: we learn both of these things sooner or later and they are both adressed straightforwardly, but it's only after the reader could have already guessed them.
Overall: like I said, I don't regret having read this book and I did like some aspects of it (like Autumn's and Sylv's relationship - although it could have been more developed as well), but it definitely wasn't great. The characters' lack of depth is it's biggest flaw. (hide spoiler)]

So far, it's been a really intense and quite good read. I've been a little confused by who is who and who is related to whom, but I think I've about got it squared away. Books like this are always a little hard for me to read because I was a school teacher for several years, and Sandy Hook gave me nightmares for weeks. Still, (view spoiler)[ so far it seems okay and I'm looking forward to finding out more about what happened to cause the shooting. I did think the shooter wasn't in much of a hurry, which struck me as weird. He wasn't shooting everyone like usually happens in a real shooting, he was just standing there enjoying picking them off as they came up to the door. He's almost written as all-seeing... AND the perfect shot which was also weird. Most people aren't actually great shots against moving targets, so it seemed a little odd that he basically nailed everyone he shot at. I'll be interested to see if that's ever explained also. (hide spoiler)]

Okay, I'm honestly wondering why the critical reviews on this book have been so good. The first part was interesting but now that Tyler is on the scene, it's seriously like Disney goes to a school shooting, (view spoiler)[ complete with evil villain taking center stage to monologue. Where are the police? He's spent probably twenty minutes up there yakking and randomly shooting people and nobody has shown up yet. Further, the behavior here is just completely unrealistic. People who are coming in and committing a mass murder in a school are trying to create as much damage as they can as quickly as possible because they know they don't have a lot of time. That's why teachers are trained to lock their doors... the odds are good a shooter won't bother trying to get through a locked door, especially if they can't see through the window, because it wastes time. Most of them are going to end their own lives as soon as it looks like they'll be caught, so the clock is ticking. Tyler acts like he has all the time in the world.

I don't believe for a minute he overpowered a grown man and strangled him to death with zip ties. He couldn't have shot a gun in the school without tipping people off, hence the zip ties and I just have a hard time seeing how he could force the man to strangle himself without lowering the gun long enough for the guy to react. Similarly, I don't believe at all that, especially once he got down off the stage, he wouldn't have been overpowered by a couple jocks... who already hated him anyway... from behind while he's paying attention to one or two kids. Just. Not. Buying. It. (hide spoiler)]

Not that I'm saying a seventeen year old with a grudge wouldn't LIKE to be this theatrical... I'm sure many of them would, but I don't think they'd be able to control that many people in that large a space for very long without being taken down. Especially if they're wandering around snickering and monologuing.

I don't understand how a book that covers such an intense, terrifying, adrenaline-spewing event as a school shooting can drag so horribly. Shootings do not go on for hours and hours and chapters and chapters. They are over in minutes and we spend hours and hours and preferably chapters trying to figure out what happened and why. Also we keep getting hints that Tyler has been (view spoiler)[ spraying gunfire everywhere and killing people left and right but except for the beginning, I'm not sure where he did that. He's been picking out individuals to toy with and shooting people who come close enough to stop him. And where and how did he learn to shoot so well? He's not using an AR-15, he's using a handgun or two, so it's not death by mass bullet sprays. Sorry to be graphic; as a teacher during Sandy Hook I had to spend a lot of time thinking about shootings and how I was going to attempt to keep my kids safe if it happened at my school, but this continues to be ridiculously sensationalized and reduced to nothing but melodrama. So in a tribute to how poorly this book is actually written, I don't actually even remember Matt (view spoiler)[ getting shot. And it didn't happen in the third section which means it must have happened in the second... that's a very long time to go. Again, makes no sense. I'm mostly just glad it's over. And if he really blamed Autumn and more especially Sylvia then why in the world did he let them live while killing off the kid he supposedly liked. (hide spoiler)] I can't honestly recommend this book to anyone, and it feels like someone trying to make money by sensationalizing a truly traumatic and horrific type of event. If you're going to write a book about an issue like this, you need to be ready to handle the conversation surrounding it in a serious and respectful way, and that just didn't happen here.
