Let's also work together to acknowledge getting up to date in our series! It's as big a deal as completing one.

Here's how it works.

1. You can find the challenge here or on our group home page.
2. After selecting the challenge, complete the information requested, including the number of series where you plan to get up to date in 2016 (it says books here but for this challenge, think series). Where it asks for a shelf name, type in your profile name. Save the information.
3. Go to your shelf and edit "bookshelves." Type in "500 up to date" (without the quotes) and then select "Add." This will be the shelf you'll use to track your progress (more to come).
4. Return to the group home page and select "update my entry" and add the shelf name as follows: 500-up-to-date
5. Click "Save."
6. You've now entered the challenge!

Now, how do you track your series progress?
Whenever you read the last book in a series that you now consider up to date, add that book to your 500-up-to-date shelf. It will be included in the challenge results.

(If an author of one of your series releases another book during the year and you don't read the new book by December 31, 2016, you'll need to remove the last book you read from the 500 up to date shelf.)

We hope everyone will join!

Laura When I put my name on the shelf I get error message. Can't save any suggestions?

message 3: by Laura (new)

Laura User shelf name not entered is the error

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12915 comments Mod
Enter the shelf name.

message 5: by Laura (new)

Laura It's the step where I enter my name

message 6: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12915 comments Mod
I discovered after I entered the first challenge, I only needed to enter the shelf name for the second one.

message 7: by Laura (new)

Laura Ok thanks

message 8: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 3258 comments Jonetta. Could you just check the dates of this challenge? I'm not sure how we're going to read 500 in one month.

Whoa! Great catch, Michelle! Fixed. Thank you.

Tracey (trakka) | 1363 comments Ha ha ha! I did wonder why it was telling me I am 2 "books" behind when I only want to get up to date with 5 in the year.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12915 comments Mod
I never even noticed as I hadn't put a book on this shelf yet.

Monica | 860 comments Haha! I was wondering why I was so behind on books! Good catch.

Karin Okay, I joined. I think I thought the other challenge was this same thing or made a mistake. At any rate, I got it right and put in the correct shelf name. Now I am going to make a note to myself to put books I'm reading in series I have going onto the right shelf. When you enter the shelf name on the challenge here, it is added to your personal shelves (in the place on the challenge page here).

Karin, just wanted to be certain I'm clear on what you said above.

The challenge won't automatically create the bookshelf under your profile. You have to create the shelf. I saw the one for this challenge but didn't see one for the other (completed series). Did you create one?

Yes, I did the second time; it worked right from here though. When I went to add it from my page, it was there. Not sure how that happened.

At any rate, somehow I have two challenges showing here, and being newly more active on Goodreads I am not sure how to change that and if I should have only one. I found this because I know you from Shelfari.

One challenge is for completing a series; the other is for being up to date in a series. Which one do you want to be in?

Karin Jonetta wrote: "One challenge is for completing a series; the other is for being up to date in a series. Which one do you want to be in?"

Oh, okay, got it. Both. I have some series I want to finish as they are long done, and some I am either nearly caught up in or trying to stay caught up with. I'll review them and redetermine my goals accordingly. In one I included the number of books I wanted to read toward finishing a series I'm not in a hurry to complete this year, which won't fit.

message 18: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12915 comments Mod
Make certain you've set up two separate shelves, one for each.

The number you should be computing for each goal is the number of series, not books (see #2 above). You would only shelve the last book read in the series that represents completion or bringing you up to date.

I think I did it wrong or am mixing up my challenges.

What are the shelf names? I am still running back and forth from Shelfari and am somewhat confused around Goodreads still.

message 20: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12915 comments Mod
You have to create the shelves yourself. Whatever you entered in the challenge field should be on your bookshelf.

I looked at your shelves and see you've created 500-up-to-date and it's connected to the challenge.

I don't see one for 500-series-completed. If you plan to participate in that challenge, you'll need to create that shelf (in your bookshelf).

Got it, I'll add it.

message 23: by Laura (new)

Laura Question- If a series has 2 new releases in same year can it be counted twice? Such as a book is read in Jan to catch up in series then another is released in June and that is read as well.

message 24: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12915 comments Mod
No, it should be counted as one. I've got one where I have counted it as up to date but now have learned a new release is planned for later this year.

I've got two choices in this situation. One is to leave it alone and read the new book when it's released, without changing my up to date status at that time. The second is to move it out of the up to date status right now and add it back when I read the new release. Both are acceptable choices.

Make sense?

message 25: by Laura (new)

Laura Yes, it does. I just removed up to date status on my series list on 2 Christina Lauren series as both have new recent releases. I left the shelf alone though.

message 26: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 3258 comments I feel like I'll not be able to achieve this challenge. Some books are ad like its the end then there's a new one that come out out of the blue. And then there are some I just want to end because the author should have done so.

But I will prevail

Michelle, this is a common problem. I'm calling a series up to date when I finish the most recently released book in a series. If the author releases another book before the end of the year and I don't read it by December 31, I'll remove it from the up to date folder.

You can only work with the info you've got at the time. I just had one of my "completed" series from last year be resurrected this week! Had no idea the author planned to continue the series. *sigh*

message 28: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 3258 comments I'm doing the same Jonetta. Just keeping it up to date as i know it to be. All we really can do.

I'm also counting series that are up to date for now as "completed" for the purposes of the challenge.

message 30: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12915 comments Mod
Which also works. The key is to follow your own rules consistently.

message 34: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinmy) | 3473 comments Jonetta, Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I have a "500 Up to Date" shelf, but after I (finally) added a book to that shelf, it doesn't show up in my challenge.

message 35: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12915 comments Mod
Edit your entry here and make certain you entered the bookshelf name correctly (I'd re-enter it). Make certain it's all lower case.

message 36: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 1723 comments For me it sometimes takes a while for books to show up in the group page.
But when I click on the challenge the book is there.

Reminder to all participating in this challenge:

Whenever you read the last book in a series that you now consider up to date, add that book to your 500-up-to-date shelf. It should be the only one included in the challenge results. That way, it becomes the placeholder for the series.

I am confused -- what is the difference between up to date and completed?

When a series reaches its end versus you read the last book released but the series isn't over (additional books are planned to be released).

Does that help?

Oh that can be tricky to know.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12915 comments Mod
If I don't know for certain, I put it in "up to date."

It's pretty easy when it's a trilogy and you're reading the third book but otherwise, you have to rely on the author or publisher telling you.

message 47: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie I tried adding rosemarie up to date or up to date or Rosemarie 500 up to date and nothing works. I also listed a shelf as each and then deleted it when it didn't work.

It's not the name that's the problem. It's how it is entered.

When you create your shelf, type this exactly:

500 up to date

Make certain you type this exactly in the challenge field:

500-up-to-date

Thanks, it worked. Now I am trying to increase the books # to the challenge. I said 5 but I have already read 7 and that is why I wanted to increase it.
