Sophie (BlameChocolate) *on hiatus* (blamechocolate) | 94 comments I really loved Child of the Prophecy by Juliet Marillier. The main lead is sort of an anti-heroine, who makes a lot of mistakes and a lot of nasty things, coerced by her evil grandmother. She's not evil, but she does have a few moral issues due to her upbringing.

She's distrustful, withdrawn and scared of herself. Her love interest is the exact opposite: carefree, caring, sweet, a very good friend to her. They balance each other so well. Eventually, the girl ends up hurting his feelings and it's a very difficult period for them.

I would love books with a similar relationship! Thank you everyone.

Jenna | 581 comments I would say another Marillier book has those themes also: Dreamer's Pool.

Sophie (BlameChocolate) *on hiatus* (blamechocolate) | 94 comments Thank you Jenna! I have that one on my to-read list, of course, being a Marillier's fan :)
Would like more suggestions, if anyone can help.

CJ | 12 comments I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but my favorite anti-heroine is Mallory by Carol O'Connell. She has only one part of a moral compass and it is whatever her foster mother taught her was a "no-go". If Mom didn't mention it as bad, then Mallory thought it was good to go. It is along the crime/mystery genre and there are several in the series, though I found the first few to be the best. There really isn't a love interest, but she does have a few good friends who try to keep her on the straight and narrow.

Thank you Caroline! Not sure how the story will interest me but so far the heroine seems to be what I'm looking for.

Thank you! I think these might fit very well what I want and I am especially intrigued with the adult novel.

Jenna | 581 comments SPOILERS! My suggestions have some plot spoilers!

Not sure if these really fit, but possibly the The Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner....Gen has a ton of his own issues, but the woman he falls in love with also has quite a few issues (not sure more than him, but she definitely has trust issues, etc.)

Also for a more flawed heroine that is attracted to a nice guy, Gwendolyn and Daniel in George Eliot's Daniel Deronda. (Or just watch the really great 3-hour movie version with Hugh Dancy, Romola Garai, Jodhi May, Greta Scacchi, and Hugh Bonneville).

The heroine not evil but she has done mistakes which any human being would do, she is misunderstood. She rebels dont think its a young adult book its noit. But you need to have a open mind, what i mean is if you don'nt like heroine who lie or are'nt virgins and sleep with guys then you might not like this book.

Anna | 505 comments In the Arms of Stone Angels - its' YA and it partially fits description but I'm not sure if this book is worth recommending. Sometimes I wanted to slap heroine so hard that she would fall out of her own book;).

They were perfect! What are you talking about?!? lol. I love this series.

Jen | 323 comments The Seduction of Shamus O'Rourke

This one features a heroine who gave a bit of a problem in Discovering Dani, the first book of the series. The heroine of this book was a bitch but she is reformed. I loved the book and hope you do too.

Jenna | 581 comments Yes, Megan Whalen Turner is awesome.

More in the realm of historical romance, both The Weaver Takes a Wife and The Country Gentleman feature heroines who marry for money and make no secret about it and hero usually knows...heroine's aren't really mean, but maybe don't initially appreciate things either...

David Rose | 46 comments Snap! Love Me, Love Me Not exactly what you've asked for, and one of the very best in this genre.
(Series name: "Incongruent Figures" - but this is a stand-alone story).

Jenna | 581 comments Possible...Fair Is the Rose, Thorn in My Heart, Whence Came a Prince is a trilogy that is a re-telling of the Jacob/Leah/Rachel story from the Bible (Book of Genesis). It is a Christian Historical trilogy set in 18th Scotland (I think). The hero is hardly perfect either but the heroine (Rachel) character comes off as spoiled...she's not mean...or does not intend to be...the Leah character comes off as a saint...

Thank you everyone! I already had a couple on my to-read list, so I'm on the right track!

Sara Evans The Goal ; the heroine is not a virgin(I hate mumbling virgin in novels) and isn't naive or meek. The hero is straightforward and pursues her relentlessly and isn't afraid of talking about his feelings and isn't scared shitless of commitment (thank God). It's a fun read. Also she gets pregnant after their first time, (it's not a spoiler ) if you have a problem with the main characters having a baby before they're married then don't read it. I actually don't like stories where the heroine gets knocked up, it just pisses me off but I surprisingly liked the book.

Thank you Sara! I don't mind that at all. The characters you mentioned seem interesting compared to most contemporaries I've read, so great! Although this isn't a genre I usually go for, I will give it a try :)
