I thought it might be fun to create a challenge that we all could participate in this year. While our individual goals may vary, everyone of us has a goal to complete at least one series in 2016.

Here's how it works.

1. You can find the challenge here or on our group home page.
2. After selecting the challenge, complete the information requested, including the number of series you plan to complete in 2016 (it says books here but for this challenge, think series). Where it asks for a shelf name, type in your profile name. Save the information.
3. Go to your shelf and edit "bookshelves." Type in "500 series" (without the quotes) and then select "Add." This will be the shelf you'll use to track your progress (more to come).
4. Return to the group home page and select "update my entry" and add the shelf name as follows: 500-series
5. Click "Save."
6. You've now entered the challenge!

Now, how do you track your series progress?
Whenever you read the last book in a series that you now consider completed (not up to date), add that book to your 500-series shelf. It will be included in the challenge results.

We hope everyone will join!

I have faith in you:) Thanks for joining!

Tracey (trakka) | 1363 comments Can the number of series up to date be included in here or should it just be actual completed, i.e. no more books will be released?

message 5: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12916 comments Mod
Actual completed only.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12916 comments Mod
I omitted the up to date series because it's so difficult to manage. Some you think you're up to date and lo and behold the author releases another book later in the year.

That okay? We could actually do that one separately if members are game.

That's the fine print I was talking of. Lol.

I'm game for that.
Another question must all or the majority of the series be read this year or could I include a series that the final book came out this year?

It doesn't matter at all! If only one book is remaining and it completes the series for you, it counts.

I'll create another challenge for Series Up to Date and use the same goal (500). Name your bookshelf "500 up to date" (no quotes). It should be entered into the challenge field as 500-up-to-date (don't forget those hyphens or it won't work).

message 11: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (trakka) | 1363 comments Ok, thanks! I will join up tonight.

Perfect! They're now both up. I'll open a topic for that challenge.

Eadie Burke (eadieburke) | 99 comments Do you have to read the novellas that go with a series in order to call the series complete?

message 15: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12916 comments Mod
No, I don't think so. There are several series where the novellas are optional that I considered complete without reading. You'd be the best judge for your own series.

message 16: by Eadie (new)

Eadie Burke (eadieburke) | 99 comments I don't really need to read the novellas. I was just wondering if it was necessary to read them for the challenge. Glad to hear it is not necessary.

message 17: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12916 comments Mod
Good point, Eadie. For purposes of this challenge, the series is considered complete when you call it complete.

message 18: by Phrynne (last edited Jan 07, 2016 01:14PM) (new)

Phrynne Glad you added the series up to date challenge. I find that most of my series are ongoing ones like In Death where we know there will be more, or Harry Hole and Myron Bolitar where we don't really know if it is finished or not.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12916 comments Mod
Great! I wasn't sure so your feedback is helpful.

message 20: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne I entered both anyway with random guesses. I have no idea how many series i will finish but a challenge is always good:)

Michelle | 3258 comments Same here Phrynne

No harm, no foul:)

Quynh (quynh_o) | 245 comments I'm joining this one, might give me motivation to get some completed series off my TBR. This one would be less complicated for me to do as well.

Tracey (trakka) | 1363 comments Jonetta wrote: "Great! I wasn't sure so your feedback is helpful."

Oh I'm the same as Phrynne, most of my series are continuing or I don't know hence my original question.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12916 comments Mod
Thanks, Kris! Another one of my groups is doing this for number of books read and I thought why not for series?

message 32: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 3258 comments I think that is the greater challenge. Because some series have far more books than others. But we will persevere.

message 33: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12916 comments Mod
It'll be fun to see what we do as a group, too.

message 34: by Laura (Kyahgirl) (new)

Laura (Kyahgirl) (kyahgirl) I joined both challenges....we'll see where we get to.

Why not, indeed! Thanks for sharing with all of us :)

message 37: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne I have done something wrong when setting up the challenges because I thought I had set up two shelves but the one book I just entered has gone to both challenges. So I am going to go delete one of the challenges and try again.

message 38: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12916 comments Mod
Don't delete it! You can update your entry by correcting the shelf you've assigned to each.

message 39: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne Of course. Silly me! I'll go fix it now.

message 40: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne Done:)

Reminder to all participating in this challenge:

Whenever you read the last book in a series that you now consider complete, add that book to your 500-series shelf. It should be the only one included in the challenge results. That way, it becomes the placeholder for the series.

message 44: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie No matter what I do I can't get my completed books to show: I have named the shelf- 500 series - then Rosemarie 500 shelf, then Rosemarie 2016 500 shelf. I have taken the other books of the series out of up to date shelf or 500 series.

message 45: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12916 comments Mod
Are you including the dashes? Typed, it should look like this:

500-series
500-series-up-to-date

Don't type the dashes when creating the shelf...only when inputting into the challenge entry.

message 46: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12916 comments Mod
Once you've done this, then select "update my entry."
