Ashley Marie | 563 comments I tried listening to the audio but it was very difficult for me to follow (even though I'd already read all 6 installments). I think if you're listening to the audio the best thing to do is read along as you listen, or read the book first and then listen.

Ashley Marie | 563 comments Nah ;) I started listening and had to stop. I love that they do a full cast audio, but I need narration or the book in front of me so I have a framework.

Grumpus | 473 comments I tried listening to it as well and gave up too. This is a good example of why I try to avoid full cast audio.

Jeanie | 4024 comments Wasn't Lock and Key a graphic novel first? It may reflect the simple difficulty in translating this medium to audio. I resisted getting Lock and Key because I'm not into horror as a general rule and figured a graphic novel in audio would be problematic. I guess I made a good call this time.

Dave (adh3) | -16 comments Huh, I've been listening and reading for three years without a problem. I never listen to full cast or dramatized versions. The best readers vary their voices for characters. I'v'e listened to Dickens books with hundreds of characters, got up from listening (outloud)' walk to the kitchen and make a sandwich (still listening) and know exactly who is speaking the whole time. Come back to the chair, pick up the Kindle and never miss a beat.

Dave (adh3) | -16 comments Perhaps its like typing, you have to quit conciously reading. It would not work for me if I was still saying words subconciously. I follow the text with my eyes, oberving punctuation etc. But the audio is the primary sense that follow in my mind.

Dave (adh3) | -16 comments I also highlight on the Kindle page, look up words in the built in dictionary, then "run" to catch up. If I miss something key, I rewinf 30 seconds and reread it.

Ashley Marie | 563 comments Dave, I was similar with the ASOIAF books. Roy Dotrice is a master narrator, he did so many different voices! But I always knew which character was which :)

Linda | 97 comments I was going to chime in with what Jeanie said. Locke and Key is a set of graphic novels - I actually just read through the entire series this past fall. Soon after I saw that there was an audio version of it and I immediately wondered how that would even translate into audio, because seeing the artwork is a huge part of reading the novel. Does the audio simply contain the words from the page? Or does it add in some descriptions of the artwork?

I really enjoyed the entire series in the graphic novel format, I rated it 4 stars overall. But I don't know how much I would have enjoyed it if I had listened to it and not been able to also enjoy the artwork. Now I'm curious if there is a preview sample I can listen to, just to see what it's like.

Dave (adh3) | -16 comments Linda, I've never read a graphic novel, well my comic books when youbg, but I can't imagine this would work with graphic novels. To the best of my knowldge there is no description of artwork. I'd say this is a different experience all together.

Sorry, if I'd know the thread was about graphic novels I would not have muddied the water.

Ashley Marie | 563 comments I've heard they're talking about turning L&K into a movie (or series, perhaps a trilogy?) I would be psyched for that. They filmed a TV pilot with an excellent cast but Fox didn't pick it up because they deemed it "too scary". Still pissed about that.

Melanti | 126 comments Same as everyone else. I started the audiobook but quit pretty quickly. The graphic novel is so much better.

Jeanie wrote: "Wasn't Lock and Key a graphic novel first? It may reflect the simple difficulty in translating this medium to audio. ..."

That was my impression. It just wasn't translated well from pictures to pure voices.

Linda wrote: " Does the audio simply contain the words from the page? Or does it add in some descriptions of the artwork?..."

The bit of it that I listened to didn't have any descriptions that couldn't be worked into a conversation. All it had was sound effects and characters talking. No real narration. It might have changed later in the book - but I only listened to a couple minutes worth.

Really?! I would be interested in seeing that for sure, I think it could be very well done if in the proper hands.

Ashley Marie | 563 comments The pilot is nowhere to be found, but here's the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_KmK...

It looks amazing, I wish like hell they'd been able to find a network for it.

Edit: Joe says the movie trilogy is off the table but they're still hoping for the TV series. *crosses fingers*

Linda | 97 comments Thanks Ashley! I just found it and watched it. It does looking amazing.

Julie, thank you on your offer but I think I will pass on listening to this one. It could not live up to the graphic novel. :)

message 16: by Kim (new)

Kim | 7 comments I loved the graphic novels and disliked the audiobook. The audiobook really lacked detail and description for a person to understand and visualize what was going on. Such a shame with such fantastic source material and talented cast. I would skip this unless your a locke and key super fan.

Sandi (sandikal) | 420 comments I had tried the first issue of the comic, but I just can't do graphic novels. My brain doesn't work like that. I did think that the continuing story would probably be good. I love Joe Hill's novels and short stories. So, I snapped up the free pre-order of the audio. I really hesitate to call it an audiobook, it's definitely an audio drama. Now, I have tried to listen to plays acted by a full-cast and found that as difficult as comic books. I will admit that it took me a while to get into the audio, but once I got used to the format, I really enjoyed it. The characters sounded more like real people than actors. It was a lot like the old-time radio dramas that a local station used to play that I used to listen to on late-night commutes.

That trailer Ashley posted looks amazing. I'd love to see it go forward. I read that the audio drama was actually recorded on location at an old mansion. They could have just filmed it, except they used a woman as the voice of the little boy.

I like true crime, but the fiction version of horror doesn't..."

It is the worst audiobook I have in my collection. I really doubt Joe Hill had much to do with the audio version of it. From the audio credits at the end, it appears it was made by a company that deals in comic to audio adaptations. And frankly they stink at their job...

It misses any narrative, and is impossible to follow. The only narrative you get is at the start of the next part. I recall after the first one, they were saying at the end of the last book, so and so did such and such, and I was "Oh is that what happened. I just heard a lot of banging and mumbling".
