R7: "Seven Wonders of the Reading World" (2)

Going with alternate Title 'T' since it was next on my list to read

See post below #208 - had to go with a different selection
Expecting 9 inches of snow here today. Supposed to end in about 1/2 hour so no work for me today.
Will have to go out and shovel out cars and near garage door once our snowplow guy comes so going to take advantage of free time and start reading now!

Going with book 2 in a series

The author sent me book 2 and the manuscript for book 3 that she needs reviewed/feedback on ASAP so I have to go with this book.
Happy Reading all!

Book: Friends Without Benefits by Penny Reid
Date Read: 07 Feb
Rating: 2 stars
Review: Ugh. This book turned out to be an epic fail. Elizabeth whom I liked in the previous book let me down big time in hers. Nico, the protagonist didn't fare much better. He bullied her.. and if he had those feelings, then why didn't he act on them sooner? Why run away?
Nico is now a big time comedian with his own show (with naked women. I'm not sure if this is based on some real-life show); despite what the book tries to say, I can't imagine it being female friendly. And the book never really explains the show. Still not endearing to me.
Elizabeth was so wishy-washy grating on my nerves; Nico was being charismatic; Rose was being foxy; the 4-year old Angelico was being cute. And then the epilogue.. Uggghhh. This is my third book by Penny Reid and it failed in an epic for me
The only reason that book gets two stars instead of 1 is because I couldn't really put it down. I am not sure if I will continue the series.

So since this book sort of failed for me, I'm now in a picking-slump where I don't know what book/genre/author I want to read. Anybody have a rec?

This is an historical romance set mainly in the United States in the late 1800's and book two in the Heiresses in Love series. We meet up with Fara and Grant from the first book, Upon Your Return, and see where life has taken them.
The book takes place in many locales - New York City, Virginia, South Carolina, Nassau, Mississippi and New Orleans - but mainly at sea. Grant and his son, Gabriel, are setting out on a voyage with their crew to take them from New York to New Orleans where they live. We get to know them as well as Chloe and what she's running from. While there's immediate chemistry between her and Gabe they try to fight it at every turn without much success. As they grow closer there are always secrets between them and they all relate back to Chloe even the misfortunes that fall upon them. Unfortunately some of what was going on was obvious and Gabe just seemed not to put all the pieces together although he and his dad both seemed smarter than that. Lamonte, whom Chloe was running from, was evil incarnate and Chloe didn't want to realize the full extent of the evil he was capable of and often seemed naive.
The descriptions of the ship, the cities and ports, the clothing, homes and scenery were very vivid and made me feel that I was there. There were many adventures, family and friends, sailing terms, French words, storms, travels on land and sea, fights, accidents, injuries, laughter, tears, pain, heartbreak, romance and love. The prologue set the stage of what was to come and the epilogue gives the happily ever after and some closure. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Upon Your Love.
This book was given to me by the author for my honest review.

I can make some recommends too based on our next roll.
Who are some of your favorite authors? Genres?
I've read books involving knitting before but not that series
I've read ones by Debbie Macomber, Maggie Sefton, Kate Jacobs
I've read quilting ones by Jennifer Chiaverini and Marie Bostwick
I don't knit or quilt but enjoy them anyway

I enjoyed The Taker.....still have to get book 2 in the series :)

@JoAnne: I haven't specifically singled out quilting or knitting (about which I know zero). My default is romance but I'm a moody phase reader so I go through phases. I also mix genres so that I don't get bored. My comfort genre is contemporary romance. Some of my favorite authors: Sarah Mayberry, Nora Roberts, Carla Kelly, Linda HowardGeorgette Heyer, Seanan McGuire, Nalini Singh, Juliet Marillier. I'm going to stop here..
Let's hope the next roll is good :)

I have some you might enjoy..
1. Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe: A Novel with Recipes
2. A Cottage by the Sea
3. Island of the Swans
4. Take a Chance on Me
5. To Scotland With Love
6. Trust Me, I'm a Vet (alternate title..City Girl, Country Vet)
7. When Lightning Strikes
8. Angel's Rest
The last few are all the first in series... :)

Give some of the authors I mentioned a try.
If you like Amish stories both Molly Jebber and Amy Lillard are authors I like
Historicals set in settling of the west - I love Dorothy Wiley

Book: Have You Seen Her? (Romantic Supsense #2) by Karen Rose
Qualification: 2nd in a series
Finished: 2/10/16
Rating ★★★★
Review: I really enjoyed the suspense part of the book. The plot was interesting with another creepy bad guy and just enough details to be intriguing and scary! However, I kept wondering what happened to Stephen. I loved him in the first book but in this book he turned into a jealous, tantrum throwing jerk! Yes he apologized but after the 2nd tantrum I'd had enough and couldn't figure out why the heroine hadn't. After all they'd only known each other a couple of weeks! I did love the interactions with Stephen's kids and thought the author did a wonderful job of keeping them realistic and relevant to the story. I did figure out the twist about 50% through the book but it was still very well done. So 5 Star Suspense with a 3 Star Romance makes it a solid 4 Star book.

Review: I absolutely love this series. I am hoping a 3rd book will be coming out...
This book, like the first, is full of laugh out loud humour. I found myself identifying with Charlize (Charlie)...with all her quirks.

@JoAnne, I'll check it out.. I'm usually very interested in Westerns.. I was recently found a new Western author that I can't remember who. I'm off to trace my browsing.
Thanks for the recs :)

Whether it's Shame and Terric or Allie and Zay, it doesn't matter - this series is great! A lot happens in this book and Shame is particular really grows as a character, a man and a magic user. There is append fly another Shame & Terric spinoff series coming and I can't wait to see where it takes them!

Review: I absolutely loved this book, although at times it was extremely hard to follow the 4 different timelines the book led me on, it was interesting to follow Lanore through her past in the 1800s, how she became immortal and made Jonathon the love of her life immortal but also her story of how Adair made her that way and his part in the book as well as Luke's part in her story. I feel like it was so many stories tied in that it felt like there was so much more to Lanore than she let on.

Living Dead in Dallas by Charlaine Harris
How It Fits: #2 Sookie Stackhouse
Date Read: 11/02/16
Rating: 3☆
Review :
I found this quite slow to get into at first the first quarter of the book seemed to drag. Once the plot had developed a little it became faster paced and more enjoyable. I enjoyed the trip to Dallas and the meeting of other 'supe's' and the seeds were definitely set for further novels. The first part of the book took me so long to read I'd forgotten the other mystery Sookie had gotten involved in, I do however feel this was only put in so that Bill could discover who his living ancestors were. I will continue the series, I'll definitely have to get hold of the 1st in the series so that I can get to know the characters a little better.
