I do highly recommend it, but not to everyone. It's a very particular style of humor (very British and wacky - think Terry Pratchett or Monty Python).

For instance, some quotes:

“For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.”

or

“The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.”

I read it when I was younger and loved it. And I still love it, but I know that there are some days when maybe it's not what I want to read (as its not particularly deep). It's just a fun, very witty, space adventure. And sidenote: The BBC Radio play is brilliant.

Hi Linda - Which category are you using for this one?"

Sorry about that. New author to me.

No worries, Linda! Thanks for following up :)

Gremlin | 966 comments Hey gang - I just wanted to say that for "New Releases" which are supposed to be read in the month that they come out, I'm totally willing to be flexible as some book might come out at the end of the month! So long as you've begun reading it during the month it came out, I'll accept it.

(The one in March, though, will need to be finished before the April 1, since our challenge ends at the end of March). Let me know if there are any questions on this!

Day La | 46 comments I hope I'm not too late to join! I'm almost done reading The Wrath and the Dawn I think that's Renee's debut book, or at least the one that really put her on the map.

message 57: by Linda (new)

Linda I finished my second book, Growl by Elaine Pierson , as a new series. It was meh. Standard love triangle, girl can't choose, blah blah blah. This one has a girl who can move objects with her mind and werewolves.

message 58: by Christie (new)

Christie (cereale) I completed my first Hereafter (Hereafter, #1) by Tara Hudson for first book in a series that is new to me. Can't say I'll read the rest of the series though. Updated post #7.

Just finished The Wrath and the Dawn (The Wrath and the Dawn, #1) by Renee Ahdieh ! It's such a beautiful book and I recommend it to anyone who loves a good fantasy and the world building is wonderfully done! This will be my debut book from a new author category.

The next book I just started is The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Trilogy, #1) by Marie Rutkoski . This should fulfill the category of first book in a series for me.

I LOVED The Wrath and The Dawn!!!!! Actually, I really liked the Winner's Curse too but Wrath was a delightful surprise to me...

message 61: by Barb (new)

Barb Finished my second book, which was a Christmas present to myself. I bought as a gift to myself because I was getting nowhere reading the paper copy from the library, and it wasn't available as an ebook from any of the libraries I get books from. I try very hard not to buy books, usually relying on said libraries.

The book was Opposition (Lux, #5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout , and it was okay. I'm glad to be done and put the series behind me so I can move on to something new!

R.A. Desilets | 375 comments Hey :) Wondering if The New Hunger (Warm Bodies #1.5) by Isaac Marion would work for the "new" title, because it's technically adult, but a ton of us read Warm Bodies as a novel with huge crossover appeal. Just realized that was one of the categories where adult wasn't allowed, but it was the only "adult" book I was planning to read for this challenge (mostly because of enjoying Warm Bodies) :(

Edit: This book also has a 12 year old MC and a 16 year old MC, as well as R (or so it sounds from the back of the book). Here's hoping!

Hmmmm. That's a hard one! Normally, I default to the Chicago Public Libraries definition, but they don't have that book listed (that I can find). I'll check in with Wendy, since I know she's read it, and I'll let her make the call :)

Okay - I think the consensus is that we'll let this one count due to younger main characters and such - though, it's a tricky one and definitely in a gray area!

YAY! I won't read any other Adult novels for this challenge, just to play fair since this is a gray area book :) So excited though because my library actually had it! (And so far it's good)

Brandi, I heard a lot of good things about the Wrath and the Dawn but for some reason always put it to the side for other things. I'm so glad I finally read it, now I understand what all the hype was about :)

I'm on the last few pages of the Winner's Curse right now, it's good, but a little confusing at times. I'm hoping the second book is better...

message 82: by Brandi (new)

Brandi (brandireynolds) | 247 comments Day, the second book I think is better, but I also thought it was more (view spoiler).

Hi Laurel - unfortunately, you already have a book for the "new author" category. We're trying to get one from each category, not doubling up.

Would either of the books you read work for a different category? A gift you recently received? Or a genre you don't normally read? Or was one of them recommended to you by someone in YA-MA?

message 86: by Gremlin (new)

Gremlin | 966 comments Also, I changed the wording in the instructions (adding "one from each category"). Sorry if it wasn't more clear!

Amber (amberm867) Finished my first - The Princess and the Hound (The Hound Saga, #1) by Mette Ivie Harrison
This is a new-to-me author.

Updated original post#13.

message 88: by Rae (new)

Rae Quigley (raequigley) | 256 comments I'm post #12

I finished number 1 which was The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen and was a gift to me from my best friend.

Starting number 2 now which is In the Mind of Revenge (The Shamed, #1) by Liv Hadden . It's a new genre to me... I think it's mystery. I'm not sure if it's YA or not and I'm not even really sure what it's about which both scares and intrigues me haha. I received it as an ARC. I usually only EVER read YA books and never mysteries like this one so while I'm not sure if it's YA or not I'm hoping it can count since it will be so different from what I'm used to?

message 89: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments I have had a slow new year for reading so far but I know I will catch up. I just finished #1 Sold by Patricia McCormick It was given to me by a student. I am glad I read it. It amazes me when an author can turn a horrible subject into a beautifully written story.

message 90: by Linda (new)

Linda Is it considered a gift if you bought a book with a gift card you received? I'm about to start On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta that I've always wanted to read, and bought with my Amazon gift card I got from my sister-in-law as a holiday present.

message 91: by Barb (new)

Barb Finished #3 - new series - The Young Elites (The Young Elites, #1) by Marie Lu - I'm not sure I'll read the rest. I liked the beginning and the end, but I found myself skimming the middle, and I went three days without reading, which is not a good sign for a book.

I've got a lot of library books that are not new to me to read, so I'm going to take a break from the challenge for now. :)

Casey Anderson | 637 comments Finished my first: Project Alpha (Voyagers, #1) by D.J. MacHale which was a present to me for Christmas.
Will update my post #22

message 93: by Day (new)

Day La | 46 comments So I just started reading Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger . This was going to cover my new genre category but I can't find whether this is YA or not. Would this still be ok?

message 94: by Gremlin (new)

Gremlin | 966 comments Rae wrote: "I usually only EVER read YA books and never mysteries like this one so while I'm not sure if it's YA or not I'm hoping it can count since it will be so different from what I'm used to? "

Rae - I think that you make a very compelling argument, actually. I'm going to open up the "new to me" genre to accepting non-YA categories - because I'm going to guess that for many of us, if we want a truly "new" genre, we'll have to get out of YA! Hahaha.

Yep! Actually - I'm about to open up the "new-genre" category to include non-ya books, since that really opens up the options for truly reaching outside our normal genres. :)

message 97: by Gremlin (new)

Gremlin | 966 comments Everyone should be updated! But do, please, check my work as sometimes a post slips by without my notice.
