This is a extreme adult series. Excellent up to the 7th book in which I stopped reading. She sacrificed story for more erotica. The first seven were story first, but sex seems to sell in this genre!
I like Laurell K. Hamilton Books. Definately NOT teenage fluff, sweet vampire stuff. I read about half her books, got tired after awhile but plan on finishing the series at some point. There is alot of sex, graphic sex, some violence. Vampires, shape shifters, necromancers, etc and none of the glittery "pretty" stuff that is popular. I agree.. with you. I don't like the Twilight/Vampire Diaries crap.
Felix got it right. While I did start reading these books in the 90's when I was a teenager, I would not consider them YA lit by any means. The first few books don't have any sex at all. Sexy, but not sex. Eventually the main character gets a boyfriend and there is sex, still it fit with the story. I kept going far longer than I should have hoping she'd get back to the way the books were in the beginning but finally gave up when it got to Blood Noir. I like well rounded books and that includes romance in with my action but when the books become 95% detailed orgies and 5% ass kicking it's to much. I want the sex to fit in with the story, not be the end all be all of the book.
To be honest, if you had looked up Laurell K Hamilton and her work, you would've seen that her books are exactly what you're looking for so you wouldn't have had to make this thread.
If you want to read pure erotic paranormal series then I would say start with Hamilton's other series, 'Merry Gentry'. First one is
. Unlike the Anita Blake series, this one starts straight with sex.
If you like that, then try Anita Blake but be a bit more patient with it.
The 'Anita Blake' series actually starts off being a great dark urban fantasy series, but Hamilton decided to turn the series into paranormal erotica, much like her 'Merry Gentry' series.

Thematically it's not at all like Twilight. Unfortunately the writing is no better.
Anita Blake and Merry Gentry series are both Urban Fantasy series. Also adult fiction and no teen angst or anybody glowing that shouldn't be. Werewolves and other animals shifters do a great job changing form as they should too. I have read these books in my mid to late teens in the 90's as well. But have to agree with some of the other posters here. The author totally smothered/dramatically changed Anita's character big time from the first book til 7+ to me.
I don't mind sex in my stories and even read erotica too which is predominately sex. But in my paranormal romances and urban fantasy stories, I expect a lot more time OUT of the 'bed' action too. And for sure the main character's day job and self should be choked out by far too many characters either.

Freakin love the Anita Blake series!!!!! Definitely not fluffy teenager twilight-sequel at all!
This series is not very well written IMO and does not get erotic until much later in the series. The main character is a Catholic vampire hunter who hates all supernaturals. I much prefer series where the protagonist is a supernatural themselves. I liked Bitten by Kelley Armstrong much better, its a great balance of supernatural, action, romance, and erotica.

Anita was a necromancer. Not your most official supernatural. But I don't think regular humans raise zombies and vampires. ;) And that is interesting
