I often see references to the fact authors need to find their target audiences. For me this is easier said than done. So far I have primarily written in the autobiographical/memoir genre. As far as I am concerned my tale would logically appeal to all age groups and those with a broad interest in life and reading. Consequently, I am not sure how I am supposed to identify a specific group of readers. Of course there are those primarily interested in biography/memoir but even then I find it hard to identify where they are. Has anyone advice they may share to help people in my position?

Thank you for posting this, Tanya. I have the same question. My novel involves time travel and light romance, but it doesn't fit in traditional sci-fi, and the romance part is just a sub-plot. Any help would be appreciated.

Jim Vuksic The creation and expansion of sub-genres within each traditional genre have blurred the differences and made them less important to many readers. Numerous readers now demonstrate an eclectic taste in their choice of books. They have adopted an attitude of "A technically well-written and interestingly narrated story is a good story and worth reading." So write what you feel naturally inclined to write and are most comfortable writing. Don't fret about targeting specific readers, they will eventually target you.

Thanks, Jim. That's very encouraging.

We may only hope so Jim but, so far, has not been my experience. However, I am about to publish my first fictional book. Maybe a different genre will have more positive results. Have to wait and see.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 460 comments Hi Tanya,
I'm by no means an expert on the matter as I have just as many issues finding a target audience. I will share with you what I've been told and have come across. The best bet is to find any topic your book mentions and pertain to those people who enjoy that topic. You can also go by age demographic, people who enjoy memoirs and maybe anyone whose shared similar life experiences.

Hope that helps!
