So, in the end...

Who do you think at the end of this book is the winner? I know this might sound totally off topic, like 'there's no winner', but I feel like Mariam was the one who in the end achieved something remarkable throughout the story, cause Laila in the end just got what she deserved, which was Tariq and her kids back.
But Mariam, after her mother's oppression, in the end redeemed herself from her past and finally felt maternal love, something that she lacked throughout her childhood.
What do you think? I'm really curious. I honestly had low expectations before i read this book. But reading it, it totally changed my mind.

I was too much excited through out the book. I think Mariam won through her life. She produced something useful with her life. She did it selflessly. Laila and Tariq and others got the things they wanted, it satisfies their ego. Mariam mother could have been like Mariam, but she chose to act selfishly by taking her life-an easy and weak way-without thinking about Mariam.

I guess she did win. But at the same time, it gave me a glimpse of life in Afghanistan which was such an emotional read. My sister is Khaled's biggest fan and before we met him, I tried to read The KIte Runner again but finished this one. Read the first 50 pages of And The Mountains Echoed and because of A Thousand Splendid Suns, I'm going to wait for the right time soon to pick up his books and read them...one at a time that is! She had some major difficulty which was great to see but also I would assume she did redeem herself, especially after an obstacle at the beginning of the book. Astounding read!

In a way they both won. Laila was able to be with the person she loved and her children. She was also able to move forward with education which was denied to her in marriage. Mariam finally received the love she wanted. It gave her something to fight for.
