I've just posted my review of Shakespeare vs. Cthulhu by Jonathan Green, and it's an anthology based on a fun premise that delivers. A fun read:

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Metro 2034 (Metro, #2) by Dmitry Glukhovsky

I loved the first book and really wanted to enjoy the sequel, but Metro 2034 proved to be a disappointment - which was a real shame.

Helen | 51 comments Just finished a fabulous children's book that resonates equally deeply for adults: Foxheart Foxheart by Claire Legrand
Foxheart is a magical, beautiful book that draws the reader in from the first paragraph and carries the reader on a thrilling journey through time and place to an emotionally satisfying ending. Reminds me of Inkheart in the quality of language and the inventive fantasy as well as the strong emotional connection between Quicksilver and the reader. Lots of humor to relieve the danger. I hope there will be more in this world from this author.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The Flight of the Eisenstein by James Swallow

I've said before that I'm a huge fan of the 40K universe, and in particular enjoying the Horus Heresy series - well this has to be the best book in the series so far! It's well written and conveys the bleakness of the world well, and more than that acts as a kind of template for what I enjoy about the setting so much.

The astartes continue as superhuman heroes, but against foes just as capable, if not more so. The story tells of a lone frigate trying to warn Terra of Horus' treachery. The action is desperate and while Nurgle is my least favourite of the Chaos pantheon, his influence is used to devastating effect. This is match with the evolution of the cult worshipping the Emperor as a divine being.

I also enjoyed the wider take on characters beyond the marines - the Sisters in particular are formidable and I'm looking forward to learning more about them. Overall this was a cracking read.

This book is an amazing read not just for writers. I loved learning more about King's past and his process. Couldn't put it down.

Finally picking back up "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" by Shirley Jackson after three false starts. Haunting and creepy, but in a totally understated way. I love it so far.
