Welcome J.,
From your use of the term "Nazi" I take it that your new work has a WWll connection.

Jacqueline Leigh I grew up on historical fiction, and now am trying to learn how to write historical fiction for kids from a West African perspective. I'm also an ESOL teacher and have an active family life. I look forward to learning lots from this board.

A L Jordan | 7 comments Hi all. Very excited to be a part of this group! I am indeed an author, but have no fear as I have observed the rules of the group. Before an author I am a keen reader and my favourite genre is historical fiction. I live in England and love a good book to watch the sleepy hours of the day slip by. I'm very looking forward to reading everyone's recommendations and discovering new gems!

Kitty-Lydia Dye | 6 comments Hi, I'm Kitty and I am a writer and artist. I love historical fiction, especially if it has some sort of supernatural or fantasy element. My favourite historical periods to read about are the Victorian and Tudor eras :) I'm looking to branch out and read other historical periods as well.

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Hi, I'm Alice and I'm a great fan of historical fiction (set in Europe and old China). I was born and educated in Hong Kong and have been bilingual since my school days. In recent years I've taken a passionate interest in writing historical fiction set in China, as it is my belief that fiction is the best way to introduce Chinese history to a Western audience. This belief is based on the premise that I, among other non-Westerners, love learning European history through reading European historical fiction.

I focused a lot on Taishan immigrants in my writing.

Ian Stewart (goodreadercomIanStewart) | 104 comments Hi Alice
I lived in Hongkong for 15 years. I was married there. My wife was Indonesian-born Chinese. I was a correspondent for The New York Times and served two terms as president of the Foreign Correspondents Club. Many good memories of Hong Kong. I have written two fiction books on Hong Kong-Beijing relations, The Peking Payoff -- written when we called Beijing Peking -- and recently The Lust of Comrade Lu, with a story line relevant to present circumstances. Hope you find some books that interest you through Goodreads.

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Hi Mark and Ian, so glad to meet you both!

In my primary school days, I devoured Jin Yong's martial arts novels which are all set in old China. Those novels initiated me into the world of Dynastic China. Then in my high school years I fell in love with Chinese History. Now as a historical novelist who's fully bilingual and with a focus on China, I feel I have the edge of being able to tap into the hidden treasure trove of riveting stories embedded in China's dynastic history to find inspiration for my novels.

Michael Fattorosi | 14 comments Hello Everyone ! I just joined today... and yes I am an author - though a reluctant one at that. I love reading historical fiction, which led to me to a family genealogy project that has lasted 12 yrs - so far - and I am far from finished - which has now led to my first HF novel.

I travel to Italy frequently in order to do research. Im still trying to get into the Vatican Archives to review family records from the 16th century so if anyone knows how to accomplish that - please let me know !

Thanks to the mods for making this group happen !

Tom Mathews I'm Tom and I'm a readaholic. I enjoy all sorts of genre, especially historical fiction as it allows me to travel through time and visit lands which no longer exist.

I've been a GR member for a few years but just recently joined this group. I've just started reading Hard Red Spring, an ambitious novel that looks at 100 years of Guatemalan history as seen through the eyes of Americans who chose for whatever reason (political, commercial or religious) to make that turbulent land their home. I'm looking forward to revisiting, literarilly, this beautiful country that I spent time in in my youth.

message 222: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello, everyone. Looking for some new groups to broaden my horizons. Lately I've read a bit more historical fiction and non-fiction than I normally would, and I saw an interesting post from one of your members that I wanted to answer, so here I am. I love historical fiction that makes me realize that we don't change much as people, over time, whatever befalls us.

Looking forward to learning from all of you about what's best out there!

Hello my name is Marcelina and my favorite genre ever is historical fiction. I think that I'm a big WWII buff, and so that's why some of my favorites book include: "The Book Thief, Nightingale, and Code Name Verity." And I'm talking that these are my top three of ALL time haha :p (shows my dedication to this genre)

I found this group through the 2016 Olympics and hopefully I'll fit right in! :)

Gary Hall | 23 comments My "The 5K Zone" is a fictional account of Trudi and Peter dealing with the expulsion of ethnic Germans from the Czechoslovakian Sudetenland at the end of WWII. I'm sure you would enjoy that (Some similarity to "The Nightingale."

Luke Gracias | 1 comments Hi Everyone
My name is Luke Gracias and I am from the beautiful Gold Coast in Australia. All my life, I have loved reading history and sadly today it is restricted to long flights and the odd times i get stuck out on a job somewhere in Outback Australia.
I am an avid photographer, a film maker and yes I have recently had my first book a historical horror thriller published as well.
I am really keen on book which elude to historical events which are difficult to explain, conspiracy theories etc. Hope to get some recommendations here.

message 228: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 2 comments Hi. I have never joined a group thing before so here goes, trying to be more social. I love to talked about books and everything else that goes with them. I read pretty much everything but enjoy historical fiction the most because I feel that I am learning while I am being taken away from the here and now. Poisonwood Bible, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, The Other Boleyn Girl are some of my favorite but I enjoy to mix it up with Margaret Atwood, The Road and other dystopian series. I read more than one book at a time, which I don't know if that is weird but that me.

C.L. Bush (courtyb3) | 12 comments Hi all! Brand new to the group and so excited to read up on everyone's interest and suggestions. First of all, YES I am a writer myself, but before that and currently I am a voracious reader! I love the written word and history is an obsession of mine. I write historical mysteries, but I love reading them as well. I also edit full time for a few select clients.

My favorite authors are Diana Gabaldon, Cameron Jace, Sarah Woodbury, Lynn Kurland, Jason Vail, Priscilla Royal. If you haven't read any of their books, SO check them out.

I was born and raised in Southern New Jersey (nothing at all like portrayed on TV. That is north jersey!) and currently live on a 6 acre farm with my husband who is U.S. Army, our 5 kids, 14 chickens, 2 rabbits, 2 chinchillas, 2 dogs, a duck and a goat. Yes, it's insane here at times. I am also expecting my first grandchild in December (strange at 35 but she is my stepdaughter and I will love him nonetheless).

Looking forward to getting to know you all and finding some great books to get lost in. :)

C.M. Harald (cmharald) Hi

I'm Chris. I write historical fiction and am a History teacher in the south of the UK - on a good day I can see France.

Pretty much read anything, although have some history magazines on the go at the moment. I'm another one who reads more than one book at a time, tend to read a balance of historical fiction and non-fiction, among other genres. Usually 19th and 20th Century, but keep getting drawn into the English Civil War at the moment.

message 235: by Papermaker (new)

Papermaker | 2 comments Hello all!
I found this group from the Olympic challenge. I'm a historical fiction junkie to the point of having to stop and force myself to read other things. I of read a little bit of everything though.
I majored in history and that has probably led to my Hist fic love. I usually lean toward Ancient, Tudor and Victorian eras, with a nice mix of Antebellum.

message 236: by Marty (new)

Marty (martymill) | 3 comments Hi, I just joined up. I'm Marty and as the username indicates, I'm a librarian. Specifically, I'm an art and design librarian with an art history degree. I've always liked historical fiction/mysteries much better than most other genres. Bonus points if the books have a Gothic element.

I like pretty much any time period, but prefer pre-1960s. I also found this group through the Olympic Challenge, which sounds like great fun!

A.P. Martin (apmartin) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Paul, a retired academic living in the Swiss Alps. I'm a keen reader of historical fiction, all periods but I prefer adventure or thriller to other genres eg romance. I seriously lack consistency in that, as a reader, I prefer discussing books to writing a review. As a wet behind the ears first time writer of fiction, however, I absolutely crave as many reviews as possible!
I look forward to both!

Paul A. | 21 comments Hi,
I'm another Paul. I live in Virginia, and I'm an avid fan of both history and historical fiction. Looking forward to participating in the group.

message 240: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Peters (andrewjpeters) Hey Everybody!

Really glad to have discovered this group. My taste in historical fiction leans toward ancient world (Mary Renault, David Malouf, Nick Drake, as well as stories with some fantasy/mythology inspiration (Madeline Miller, Wilbur Smith, David Gemmell) and occasionally mysteries (Steven Saylor, Gary Corby. Hopefully that's not too much name dropping in my first post here. :)

I am an author as well and look forward to the discussions. I'm also a social worker, now working at a university after a long time on the "front lines." Historical fiction and fantasy makes for a nice break from everyday realities. I live in New York City, and I love traveling abroad to see the 'Old World' and archaeological sites.

Sara Thomson (sarathomson) | 2 comments Hello, I'm new here. I'm Sara. My favourite genre is historical - particularly books set around the first and second world war. In fact I love it so much I wrote my first book set in the period. I'm so looking forward to getting to know you all and getting some good reading recommendations.

message 242: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Nice to meet you all, New Members! Welcome to the group :)

message 243: by Gary (new)

Gary Hall | 23 comments Sara . . . My book is concerned with post WWII Germany/Czechoslovakia, which is a little different time frame. As you may know, ethnic Germans were expelled from the Sudetenland at war's end. The 5K Zone deals fictionally with young Germans Peter Ackerman and Trudi Kehle as they deal with the hand they are dealt and eventually escape.

message 244: by J (new)

J Roth | 3 comments Hello,

I write under the name James Roth for the good, though sometimes irritating, reason that I share my birth name with a famous comedic actor. While using that name no doubt would bring sales, it would also bring disappointment to his many fans once they saw that "me is not he." Also, while in the odd moment I think I'm funny, I mostly write historical mysteries, crime and suspense and some contemporary rather than comedy, though I've published a few children's stories editors told me were funny:-) Of course, they may have been trying to be funny.

Historical fiction authors I enjoy include Pattison, Eco, Perry, Peters.
Doherty, some Bowen, Hewson, Alexander.... I'm currently working on novels set in late 1800s San Francisco and late 1930s Hollywood.

Worked as a writer and editor for employers most of my career--writing fiction on the side--until I took an early out to write fiction full time.

Glad to be a part of Goodreads and this group.

Anyone can contact me here or through jproth.com or @parsroth. Happy reading, historical fictionistas.

Michele | 352 comments Just joined! I'm a historian by training, an archivist by profession, and a reader by genetics, so this group seems like just my cuppa tea :) I enjoy well-done (by which I mean both well written and well researched) historical fiction, whether it's fantasy (Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's Comte St. Germain series), alternate history (The Man in the High Castle), romance (Salem's Daughter), memoir (I Will Bear Witness: A Diary of the Nazi Years 1933-1941), just plain fiction (The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society) or whatever. Looking forward to reading and discussing!
