Lisa Berkebile (lisa15935) | 1 comments Hello everyone!! My name is Lisa. I just happened to come across this group by accident. I love historical fiction. I always find myself drawn to books in this genre. Right now I'm reading The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson. I'm really looking forward to getting great recommendations every month from this group!!

Welcome Robert and Lisa. I'm new myself....half the time not sure of what I'm doing, so must apologize ahead. I write historical fiction - favorite subject the American Southwest and West 1800s to 1950s, stories about every day people whose lives are affected by historical events.

Hahtoolah | 6 comments I just discovered this group. I always have at least two books that I am reading, but I am especially fond of big thick historical sagas. I am looking forward to reading reviews and getting reading suggestions here.

Karen Charbonneau | 9 comments I've always read historical fiction and have written three historical novels. It takes me years to write a novel because I spend so much time doing the research. I like to think you can learn history from my books and read a good yarn, too. Karen Charbonneau

Alice Lockley Hi guys, I too am UK based.
just looking to connect with others. I am also an author. I use the term loosely.
I just wanted to say I'm doing this because I've been really, and still am, ill, and I'm going to put it out there that I'm struggling.
So hello, and happy reading.

Teri | 1 comments Hello all... I'm not new to GR but I am new to this group (or any other really on this site). I read all kinds of things, but I am always drawn to historical fiction. For a very long time I mostly focused on British historical, but lately I've been feeling drawn to all things Spain. Looking forward to discovering new authors and titles through this group. :)

Robert Walker here Karen. I've only written one historical fiction book, and Yes, it took a lot of research. Can you tell us about your books?

Karen Charbonneau | 9 comments Hi Robert: I would love to write about my three historical fiction novels, but I'm in the middle of the Marble Creek Kindle Scout promotion https://kindlescout.amazon.com/p/1D4V... and am rather stressed out to be able to write thoughtfully. The Wolf's Sun is set in Brittany (during the 1675 Peasant Rebellion) and in Paris (during the Affairs of the Poisons) https://www.amazon.com/WOLFS-SUN-Intr...
and A Devil Singing Small is loosely based on my mother's life with my schizophrenic father from World War II through the Vietnam War. https://www.amazon.com/DEVIL-SINGING-...

B Y S Hi everyone , my name is Batoul. I studied English literature. Am new to this group. I love reading from every book genre but historical fiction gives me the biggest pleasure due to its ability to motivate imagination

message 162: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello,
I'm a monkey with a keyboard. Through random mashing of the pretty letters, I managed to write a HF novel about the American Civil War. It's loosely based on actuall events that took place in San Diego County, Califronia.
I'm also a reader and enjoy a variety of genres but will limit the list to Hf for this post. Ancient Rome is an intrest of mine, but Ancient China is my favorite. I look forward to chating with you all.
Thanks

message 163: by Patty (new)

Patty Pieczka Hi, I've been interested in historical fiction for a long time and recently finished writing the book that takes place in 1904 St. Louis. I enjoyed every minute of the writing and research, , though the editing was a little more work than I bargained for at the beginning of the process. I wonder if other authors feel that way and I look forward to lively discussions.

message 164: by [deleted user] (new)

Sure, editing takes time.

message 165: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) Hello ... Tessa (or BC) here. I've been a member of Goodreads since about 2008, but only just joined this group. I had been active in an Historical Fiction group on Shelfari so had never looked for an HF group here. Now that Shelfari is no more I'm exploring new groups.

I read voraciously, and just about anything with words is fair game. Although my preference is for literary fiction, historical fiction and mysteries are probably my next favorite genres.

T.J. (teejayslee) | 14 comments Hello! Just arrived here!

I am live in Denmark, mad about all things Viking. Got a Viking burial mound (gravhoej) just down the road, travelled Scandinavia, Canada and UK seeking out all manner of rubble and ruins. Devour books on the period, mostly non fiction. Hope to find kindred souls!

Robert Walker | 26 comments Karen wrote: "Tell me about your historical novel, Robert."

Hi Karen, Thank you for asking. "The Old Blue Coat" is a saga about the poor, uneducated Murphey family who lived on the frontier during and after the American Revolutionary War. Though it is fiction, the book is based on the experiences of my ancestor, Edward Murphey, and depicts actual events. You can view Edward Murphey's Revolutionary war record by Googling Edward Murphey s1569.

Hi Robert, It sounds fascinating. One of my ancestors came from County Antrim in what is now Northern Ireland in 1732 and his son fought at King's Mountain and was given land in Kentucky after the Revolution. I'll read the description on your book to see if it's a similar thread.

My GGGG grandfather Edward Murphey fought at Kings Mountain also. Even though he could not read and write, he was the Orderly Sergeant for his militia company. As you no doubt know, they were called the "Over Mountain Men."

message 171: by Karen (new)

Karen Charbonneau | 9 comments I didn't know that they were called "Over the Mountain Men.
My cousin has done a lot of research, but hasn't shared much of it with me. I read your book description. Sounds really interesting.

Lizabeth | 22 comments Hello from Lizabeth in Central Florida! I have been a GR member since 2012 but the site has changed a lot and I want to get back into it now. I love historical fiction that is well- researched, American lit classics, multi-generational family sagas. My favorite eras to read about are ancient and Medieval Europe and Depression era America. I love Ken Follett (Pillars of the Earth is the best book ever written!), John Steinbeck, Colleen McCollough. Currently reading "My Notorious Life" by Kate Manning. Lookin forward to being overwhelmed with new books to read!

Kelly Furniss (kellyfurniss) | 7 comments Hi. I am from North Yorkshire, UK. I'm a fan of HF and recently have recently started focussing on reading War Fiction/some factual which crosses with this genre. The last HF book I bought was Light- Margaret Elphinstone as the cover attracted me due to recently going on lighthouse tour which left me in awe of them!.
The monthly book looks great and I will read it if I can obtain an affordable copy (no copies in my County libraries)

I just saw your post, Kelly. War fiction is my thing also. What is "Light" about?

message 187: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Furniss (kellyfurniss) | 7 comments It's a HF Robert and I will admit to purely buying it because of the cover! ha!. But here is the synopsis. Light- Margaret Elphinstone.
Set on a tiny island off the Isle of Man in 1831, Light is a family drama that reads like a pulse-pounding thriller. Sisters-in-law Lucy and Diya are raising their children together far from prying Victorian eyes, even as they dread the day the outside world will come to their island. That invasion arrives in the form of a surveyor and his assistant, sent to the remote outpost because a new lighthouse must be built and, according to custom of the time, a man must be found to replace the current lighthouse keeper, Lucy. That Lucy does a man’s job and Diya turns out to be a highly educated Indian woman shocks and confuses the men, but soon romance blossoms. Faced with banishment from the only home she’d ever known, Diya’s hot-headed daughter attempts a terrible act that may lead the family to ruin. With an assured eye for capturing the alien beauty of the island, Margaret Elphinstone creates an empathetic and compassionate tale of two singular women coming to terms with a sea change in their lives. Thank you Kelly. Lucy's and Diya's fear of the outside world coming in and changing things is kinda how I feel about all the new technology coming in and changing the world I was born into.
Thanks again, sounds like a really good book.

Jo Virden | 1 comments Good Morning! I am an author and I love historical fiction, especially World War II era novels. I am excited about being part of a group who shares a passion for historical novels and who, I hope, will motivate me to reach outside my current, rather narrow interest base.

message 192: by Gary (new)

Gary Hall | 23 comments Post-WWII will help you reach outside the WWII era novel. "The 5K Zone," is a novel based on ethnic German expulsion from the Czechoslovakian Sudetenland. I wrote this novel based on research, on-the-ground exploration, interviewing Cold War border residents and expellees, and my own experience as a Cold War soldier in West Germany.
