Stephanie Yay, Peggy!!!!! How was the first night? Hope you enjoy your new home :-)

It is snowing here today:( Blah and yuck and I hate snow:(

message 404: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks everyone!

We slept very well and spent today organizing some of our stuff.

We had a little bit of snow too, but not much. Thankfully. Tomorrow is the first time I have to cycle to the train station (I could walk from the old apartment), and it will be the coldest day so far this winter...

message 405: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments We had a little bit of snow last night too. Some parts of the country got quite a bit but where I live, we probably got no more than 1cm or two. Mind you, the way the way some people were carrying on, you would think 10ft had fallen!

Such a classic song! I like Disturbed's version maybe even more than Simon and Garfunkle. It's so passionate.

Interesting version. I liked it.

message 411: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I kind of have a love-hate relationship with Disturbed. Used to love them. Then hated them. And now I just listen to my favourites. That was a great cover. It really shows what he can do with his voice. Talking of covers, normally we have more modern bands covering older songs but the one I like where an older musician covers a recent band was Johnny Cash with Hurt - I love both his version and the original NIN version but Johnny puts a lot of emotion in to his performance with this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pw...

message 412: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I always hated when the video came on for that. Odd as it may seem I am a huge Johnny Cash fan and I hated seeing him like that. Song was good though. Another cover I love and am still irritated that the radio station played it one time and never again is the michael Jackson cover of dirty diana by Shamans harvest. Actually the Michael Jackson veraion isn't too bad either I just really never liked him.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments https://youtu.be/1NHV6NUEKNU. Shamans harvest "dirty diana". I was surprised actually it seems alnost every band on the planet has at some piint done a cover of dirty diana

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Re: covers, our radio station has done a segment every friday morning for over 1 years called "Like a Version". They get bands in to do one of their own songs live, but then also a cover. There's heaps of CDs and videos on youtube and such. Not sure what is geoblocked, so if you want to search for it, Triple J - Like a Version.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list... is their channel I can find that goes back to 2013.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Like_a_... lists all the tracks that got on to the yearly album. But remember that's 23 is tracks, and there are 40 or so weeks they do it. So heaps more.

message 416: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Like a version. I like it. Like a ver her her hersioooon. Didn't think I knew Madonna did you.
When I get back on wifi I will check those out Rusalka I am a cover junky. I get my fix twice a year when lou brutus does his cover me up version of hard drive which gets me tuned in with a lot actually. I don't know why but I really do have an addiction for covers. Guess I like to see different people's takes on the same song. I'm surprised my station doesn't have a cover segment. They play a new song every nightal at 8pm even if its trash. Local licks friday at 11 when they play 1 local band for exposure. For the really weird lancer's island of misfit aongs saturday from 10pm -12 where they play mostly rock that has never made the radio. Its where I first heard the song "my detatchable penis". I mean you just don't get that every day. Then whenever a band plays local they go in and record acoustically so we hear a lot of acoustic music too. But no cover special

message 417: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I love Hurt by Johnny Cash too.

LOL, Like a Version :D Our radio station has something similar.

There was this one Belgian band that wasn't quite well-known yet, at least not to the general public, and they did a cover of Lykke Li's I Follow Rivers using spoons and tea cups (and real instruments of course). It became a huge hit and people who didn't know the band assumed they made that kind of music all the time and bought albums and went to concerts, while in fact they are more like stoner rock with a lot of screams and heavy guitars in it. They were surprised!

I think many of you will like it, the band is called Triggerfinger.

One of their own songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov1yS...
The Lykke Li cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzWQV...

message 418: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Have a hunt through. A lot of them are local Aussies, so you may not of heard of the artists, but know the songs they cover. You may find some other bands to check out.

I love it when people spin songs, or just make them totally different. Bob Evans' version of Not Fair by Lily Allen was one of those. Or Abbe May's version of Pony by Genuine. But I just love getting in the car on a Friday morning and having no idea who or what you're going to hear. On Friday it was one of my favourites Sarah Blasko doing favourite Bowie track, Life on Mars. Good way to start the day.

Oh and Travis, everyone knows Madonna. Even when they say they don't. They so do.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I once had piano music of a song that descended into chaos, and the score had instructions on it like "bounce ping pong ball randomly off the inside of your piano and see what notes you hit". "Clink wine glasses together" "invite lots of friends around for a party for ambient noise"

Oh, I remember when the Triggerfinger came out, I was indeed wondering about listening to more of there music (just on YouTube and Spotify and stuff like that). Luckily I had a coleague at the time who knew who they were and who knew my taste in music, so he warned me in time that I might not like it very much. :-) But I did have a good laugh at the people who did go to the concerts unprepared.

Congrats on your first night in your new house!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Cherie wrote: "Wow, that disturbed guy was awsome, Travis."

Yeah David Draimon has such a unique voice and takes it to a whole new level from what hes ever done. Its a song they want to play on tour but they dont carry pianos and such so they haven't figured out if they will carry the instruments themselves or more likely they will look for local orchestras to come to the show and play the music for it. Will be ibteresting but Disturbed has never been anuwhere near my neughborhood. Its just so different from anything theu have ever done. I mean they are quite a heavy rock band normally this is new and great and the 50 year anniversary of the song too. But disturbed has done a cover on just about every album and theyre always good and always a band very differwnt from them. Much like Marilyn Manson likes to cover songs very different from him.

message 424: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I just listened to the Disturbed song, interesting!

We have a usb stick that we put in our car radio and it has only covers on it. Whenever we come across an interesting cover, we add it to the rest.

message 425: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments For the most part, I'm really not a fan of covers. I think it's one thing when it's covered live, on-stage, or when it's a deep cut on a album. But when it's put on the radio as a single, I get antsy about it. Bowie himself had a total cover-album, Pin-Ups. I guess it's the authenticity behind it. Is this an artist who respects the source material, or sees something in the song that their fans would want to discover. Or, are they riding on the coat-tails of someone else's talent"

There are exceptions - Nirvana's cover of Bowie, and The Meat Puppets, etc. Bowie covering Lou Reed and the Pixies. Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is really good, that whole album was good, and coming at the end of his life, poignant. But when Counting Crows releases Big Yellow Taxi, Smashing Pumpkins covering Landslide, or one of the worst: Lennie Kravitz version of American Woman, it feels like a cash-grab.

message 426: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I agree Lynda, I generally also appreciate it much more as a live thing than as a single.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments So many in the past weeks. And all still quite young.

I was so happy that I would finally have a dishwasher in the new house. Well, I've been able to use it once and now it broke down. Yesterday I had to wash everything that was in the dishwasher (it was full) by hand! Now my dad is here trying to fix it, but after two hours he has concluded that we need to call in someone more professional.

Yup. And we did the second hand thing with a dishwasher, don't. Nearly started a house fire and I had to find rubber soled shoes and a wooden spoon to turn if off. Dishwashers mix electricity and water, just seriously, buy a new one. SO worth it. And cheaper.

message 434: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments That's annoying about the dishwasher, Peggy! I agree with everyone else, just get a new one. It will be worth it in the long run.

message 435: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Appliances are just kind of throw away items anymore. Not a lot of oarts available and if they are they usually are expensive and adding in the labor more expensive than getting a new one. Especially if in a month it breaks again. The bonus is if your appliance is 5 years old or older you will definitely be able to get one more energy efficient

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Peggy, I agree, a new dishwasher will save you money, time, energy (electric and vital) and many headaches. Appliances are not made for repairing anymore.

message 443: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments My all-time favorite cover song is Shinedown's version of "Simple Man." Actually, that is probably my all-time favorite song period.

My favorite "right now" song is Shaman's Harvest - "In Chains"
And, their version of "Dirty Diana" is probably my favorite version of that song.

Have you heard Halestorm's new song "I Like it Heavy?" I heard it on the radio right after I heard Disturb's cover and I'm really liking it too.

I bought the DVD of their "Farewell Tour No. 1". They commented about how they were criticized at first for their lack of theatrics. But they concentrated on harmony, and consequently outshone all the bands on their wonderfully crafted sound.

Sarah | 18549 comments We've had a couple of chilly mornings. It's -3C here today and everything is crispy and white. I didn't get much sleep last night as I was cold. I woke up to ice on the inside of our windows. Not had that before. The water around our boat hasn't frozen but further up the canal, there is ice on the surface. I had to cycle to work yesterday and I'm doing it again today. It's going to be chillier doing it today. I did enjoy the sound the puddles made when I cycled through them and the ice broke.

It is good. Everything Lzzy Hale touches turns to gold. From halestorm to transsyberian orchestra " forget the blame" to backup on stone sour cover of stones "gimme shelter" to eric church's damn rock and roll and the acoustic version of Jay z "empire state of mind" to duet with David Draimon doing ozzy and lita ford "close my eyes forever". Goes on and on my list.

Biggest surprise was I bought the Highly Suspect album mister asylum and basically like the entire album. I wasn't sure but took it on good faitg by a reliable recommendation
