Sarah | 18549 comments Sounds perfect Peggy! Some warm weather during the winter will be great. I've always associated Tenerife with package resort holidays too. And a few other places too but as you say, once you move away from those spots you can find some amazing little places. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Sounds amazing, Peggy! I hope you have a great time, and I look forward your comments and pictures. :)

Just FYI: The longest summer carnival is in Uruguay and it last 40 days. It always starts the Monday before Ash Wednesday and ends the Sunday before Palm Sunday, in 2017 that means Feb. 27th to April 8th. It is true that the last 2 weeks are in fall, not summer, but still it is a summer carnival.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Wow, 40 days! It looks interesting :)

Summer carnivals are very different from the 3-day winter carnival we have here.

https://www.google.nl/search?q=carnav...

Well, actually, both very colourful except slightly less clothing in Uruguay ;-)

message 3856: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Loved the colors! Only 4 or 5 days of the 40 are carnivals on the street, though. The rest of the days it take place in "tablados" that are outdoor stages.

Sarah | 18549 comments I relented and decided to go to the doctors. I had the worst Christmas ever. So the bad cold turned out to be flu. Plus ear infection. Plus chest infection. So in addition to all the cold/flu remedies, asthma inhalers, I now have antibiotics and steroids to take. Had it for 12 days now and it's gotten worse everyday. Hopefully the meds will kick in now. I'm fed up now :-(

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Aww, Sarah! You poor thing! I really hope your medication starts to work soon. I used to have to take steroids alongside antibiotics whenever I got a chest infection and they used to work a treat so hopefully they will do the same for you.

Kristie | 19136 comments Hope your meds start working quickly, Sarah, and you feel better for the New Year! That sounds like you had it really rough.

message 3862: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That sounds rough Sarah! I hope you'll feel better soon.

message 3863: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Thanks guys. I'm hopeful the meds will kick in quickly.

I agree Rusalka. We need that ark asap.

message 3864: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Sarah, sounds terrible. Steroids usually work pretty fast. Positive thoughts your way.

message 3865: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments I hope you start feeling better soon, Sarah. That's a nasty bug.

message 3866: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments It is indeed nasty. My partner had it too but he managed to escape the infections. He's on the mend now which makes things a bit easier.

message 3867: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Geez, hope you start getting better now! That sounds awful!

Kristie | 19136 comments I just saw that Debbie Reynolds died. For those that don't know, that is Carrie Fisher's mom. How sad is that?

message 3869: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Oh. I read this afternoon she was hospitalized. So sad.

message 3870: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments I'm shocked to hear that Debbie Reynolds died. It's so sad that mother and daughter are both gone.

message 3871: by Joan (last edited Dec 28, 2016 07:09PM) (new)

Joan I just learned about Positive Exposure.org from my 6-year-old granddaughter who loves the movie which shows that "everyone is beautiful"

"Positive Exposure was founded in 1998 by award winning fashion photographer, Rick Guidotti...He took photographs of what were considered the world’s most beautiful people. But one day, on a break from a photo shoot, a chance encounter on a Manhattan street changed everything. Rick saw a stunning girl at the bus stop – a girl with pale skin and white hair, a girl with albinism. Upon returning home Rick began a process of discovery – about albinism, about people with genetic differences and about himself. What he found was startling and upsetting. The images that he saw were sad and dehumanizing."
He is using his artistry to change that.

Change How You See, See How You Change

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I'm glad to see most everyone had a good Christmas and very sorry for those of you that were sick during it. I had intentions of logging on here over the holiday weekend but I never had the chance, I was too busy. It was unusually warm here on Christmas Eve and Day... around 78F (25C). After spending the morning watching my nieces open presents and eating breakfast with family, we went riding our side-by-side. It was such a fantastic and beautiful day for riding and we got to see and do things most of us had never experienced before. It was awesome. I'll share some pics if I can get them loaded to photobucket.

message 3874: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sounds wonderful KimeyDiann!

I made all the arrangements for Tenerife yesterday and today and managed to get the accomodation I really wanted even though it was sold out, so I'm happy!

We (or I actually, bf is just fine with everything I come up with ;-)) decided on a spontaneous 2 days away yesterday. So we're going to Rotterdam (Dutch city) next week Tuesday till Thursday. It was a very good deal and the last time I was there was probably 16 years ago and all I saw was the main shopping streets..

message 3875: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Sounds good KimeyDian.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your trip to Rotterdam. I'd like to visit there some day to contrast it with Amsterdam.

You guys were right. Those steroids work really fast. My ribs aren't hurting anywhere near as much now, even after just 1 dose. I'm about to taken my second dose. I am well on the mend now and feeling heaps better. I even managed to get a better night sleep. I'm pleased i went to this doctors now but perhaps i should have gone a bit earlier. Tricky with christmas closures though. Still going to take it easy though.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Finally managed to get photobucket to cooperate. Here are some of my pics from our Christmas Day ride.

We climbed up this old fire-watch tower. I've always wanted to climb one of these or a water tower.

The view from the top!

We also went to an old limestone quarry. I wish these pictures did justice to how beautiful this place is. The water is a beautiful clear blue/green.

Sarah | 18549 comments Great pictures Kimeydiann. And it's nice you got to do something you've always wanted to do and discovered some more beautiful places nearby.

message 3883: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My wife recently completed the fire tower challenge. Climbing all the Adirondack high peaks which have fire towers. You can't always climb the tower though some are unsafe.

message 3887: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Beautiful pics and brave girl!! I hate heights and definitely would not have climbed that tower! Where is this? I forget what you said earlier.

message 3888: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm with you Tasha I hate heights. My wife and kids handle the climbing. Kimey mentioned climbing a water tower. My friend used to weld and rebuild water towers. Part of the job was sand blasting and repainting them to which I asked how do you get all of it as they had to do inside and outside. Oh he says we put on harnesses and hang from ropes. No thanks lol

message 3889: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I wonder why quarrys always have blue green water. We have a lot around here and always the same color always been curious and I admit have never done one bit of researching why

message 3890: by [deleted user] (new)

Beautiful photos from a great vantage point, but that just sounds frightening. I am with the afraid of heights group here!

message 3891: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I love towers and viewpoints of any kind. Whenever we travel anywhere, i want to go up the viewpoints. My partner isn't so keen on heights but he will still go up. A friend of ours tries but generally only ever makes it few floors up and has to come back down, worse when the steps are see through. To be honest, I'm not keen on see through steps either and i am ok with heights.

message 3892: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm also a member of the "afraid of heights" group.

message 3893: by Joan (new)

Joan Travis, I have always wondered that too.
Perhaps it is because the short waves of blue light scatter more than longer wavelengths. That is why the sky look blue as I understand it. http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/blue-sky/en/

message 3894: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments I grew up fearing heights I think I got it from my mom. But over the last few years I wanted to challenge myself and do some exposure therapy for some of my fears. I'm still a little warey and haven't mastered anything gigantic but I can go on some roller coasters now and climb castles. I also am facing my fear of spiders. I used to go white as a sheet when I saw spiders and run away even cry sometimes over the smallest ones as big as a fingernail. I've been building up my confidence with small ones and staying in the same room as then until I actually held one a few weeks ago. I'm working up to bigger scary looking ones. Has anyone heard of or tried any exposure therapy?

Beautiful photos Kimey.

message 3896: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Sarah, I have heard of exposure therapy but I haven't tried any. I am also scared of spiders but I am getting slightly better with them. Small ones don't bother me anymore and I am able to get closer to big ones now than I used to be able to. I still prefer to keep my distance though! ;)

message 3897: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19136 comments Beautiful pics, Kimey.

message 3898: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Exposure therapy is popular in the world of CBT, in particular for social phobia. I know the NHS are biv advocates of it. I use exposure therapy / desensitization with my clients but it's imaginal exposure (being a hypnotherapist) so it is much gentler, done in a state of relaxation and i have found it very effective. I've used it with a wide range of phobias - driving, flying, spiders, water, injections.

message 3899: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think exposure started for anxiety disorders, but it is also used for treating eating disorders and overeating. We do research on it at my university, I'm actually currently doing a study on how to improve exposure for overeating.

I don't like heights either, but I try to not avoid it. Never feels comfortabe though, ranging from slightly unpleasant to fear and crying, depending on what I'm doing. There are some things I would never do though, mainly things that feel unsafe.

message 3900: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Interesting on the exposure for eating disorders and overeating Peggy. I'm glad you mentioned it. It also reminds me that i still haven't read the paper you posted a few weeks back. This week!

I was feeling a lot better earlier so i decided to go for a walk back in to toen to get our car and go food shopping. Unfortunately i think i overdone it and now i feel like my lungs are rubbing against my ribcage. I'm a bit gutted now.

What are everyones plans for new year's eve? I'm hoping to show my face for an hour or two down at the local pub where lots of boaters are going. There will be singing. I won't be drinking (perhaps one mulled wine). I had such a crap Christmas that I'm determined to have a nice new year even if it's a low key affair.
