Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Hope you both feel better soon Sarah!

I heard we have a flu-epidemic here. I try to stay as far away as possible from people who are coughing, sneezing and sniffing. I haven't had as much as a cold since early spring, and I would like to keep it that way. *knocks on wood*

message 3752: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Thanks Peggy. It's the second bad cold we've both had this Winter. It's very unusual for my partner to get ill. There are definitely a lot more viruses going around this year for some reason.

That sucks Sarah. Few years ago we had a Christmas party a few days before Christmas and about the nastiest stomach bug ever got passed around and over the next few days everyone took their turn with it. I still have nightmares. I think it was worse than food poisoning even. Neither one are fun

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I also still prefer the notifications. I don't like to see all the threads with unread messages because I'm not interested in all of them. The ones I really follow, I get notifications for. But to go to the YLTO home page it's easier :)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I hope you get to feeling better soon, Peggy!
I've been having some inner ear trouble off an on so I called into this program my work offers called MD Live that lets you talk to a real doctor over the phone. They can call in prescriptions or offer solutions to minor illnesses without seeing you in person. Since my company has a contract with them, there is no out of pocket expense to me and it keeps me from sitting in a doctor's office with lots of people who have contagious illnesses. Unfortunately, the doctor I spoke to said I needed to go see my doctor in person and wouldn't give me an rx for the anti vertigo medicine which is all I need. I'm just suffering through it and treating it with essential oils and other home remedies instead of exposing myself to the flu and who knows what else at the doctor's office.

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments A lot of people are quite ill I know. Thankfully I haven't got it.. yet. Staying away from people liek Peggy said lol.

I've been busy crocheting this year and studying on free mass online courses, has anyone taken part in them before? They are quite good and you get to engage with lots of people around the world. I've learnt such a lot about Horses and Animal Behaviour and Welfare. And I'm currently getting my personal statement finished to apply for uni. A defered place for 2018.
After a hard year; leaving my ex of 9 years and struggling with depression I'm finally headed in the right direction and I have books, crochet and yoga to thank for that =]

That's fantastic, Sarah! What are you going to be studying at university? Something animal related?

I have done quite a few of those online courses. I love them. I haven't done any animal ones yet but I have done some history and literature ones.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Ugh, my husband sent me a text a few minutes ago that he is coming down with a stomach virus! At least 2 of his coworkers have it and now he has started throwing up too. I hope it is short lived bug and that he will be well enough to come home for Christmas.

message 3763: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I've met very few stomach bugs that last over 24 hours

message 3764: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I also almost never have that. The last time I threw up was in 2009 or so. And that was just wrong food I think, because I felt better right after.

The worst I get is a severe cold, and that not even often. A normal cold once a year or so and then I might work from home instead of going to work. I can't remember the last time I stayed in bed.. elementary school?

Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ (pinkhairedwannabe) | 13 comments I get sick ALL the time, and the last time I had a stomach flu was mid-August 2016. However despite constantly feeling nauseous and being lactose intolerant I never throw up unless I've got a bug.

Speaking of Christmas, my grandparents might not be able to get us since a bad snowstorm will be coming that weekend.

message 3766: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Last stomach bug I got I felt ill and went in house to bathroom. It was 18 hours before I had strength to get off the floor even. I never got in bed just pull myself to toilet then pass out. I don't even know now who came and milked my cows. I was too sick to even use the phone to call I left it up to my wife to find people. Had stomach bug that bad 3 times in past 4-5 years. Once they're going around it will get you around here

Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ (pinkhairedwannabe) | 13 comments Like I said, I rarely get them, although this year was particularly bad. Got one in June, then one in August. I've never gotten them twice in one year before, and I usually get one every two years if that.

Joan Elizabeth with a super long name and symbol - how did you find and add the symbol? I want one too.

Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ (pinkhairedwannabe) | 13 comments Oh I just looked up 'heart emoji' on Google and copied and pasted it onto my name, haha. I might change it to a crown though, or a sparkle.

message 3770: by Joan (new)

Joan Did you ever notice- just when you are down with a stomach bug everyone on t.v. is eating!

Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ (pinkhairedwannabe) | 13 comments I actually have a funny(in my opinion) story on that!

I remember once when I was younger I wasn't feeling very good but still ate some chicken noodle soup anyway because my stomach always hurts, and I was watching TV. I suddenly got the strong urge to puke, and right as I realized this, the characters on the TV looked out at the audience and said: "Oh no!" Just as I ran out of the room.

message 3772: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Most of the time stomach bugs do only last 24 - 48 hours. He's supposed to be driving home Thursday night. Depending on how long this lasts, he may not feel like making the 8 hour drive. I think he will be home for Christmas, I guess I just worry because he is so far away from home.

Yes, I'll be going for the degree in Zoo Management. I'm looking forward to it.

I deferred it for 2018 thought, cuz I'm hoping to get some experience under my belt volunteering at a Donkey Sanctuary as well as hearing back for a Internship as an Animal Keeper and studying some more in prep for full time education.

Joan Best way to avoid a cold - plenty of sleep and keep your fingers away from your face
check out the research at The Common Cold Center at Cardiff University
They even have a NOSE DISCUSSION GROUP : )

Get stressed and get a cold

There is much evidence that indicates that the stress of every day life can influence the susceptibility to infection. Experimental studies in which common cold viruses have been administered into the nose of healthy volunteers have shown that there is a link between recent history of psychological stress and susceptibility to infection.

Stress appears to be associated with the suppression of general resistance to infection that leaves the person susceptible to infection. It is still not clear how psychological stress affects the immune system but the most likely link appears to be the increase in the release of corticosteroid hormones associated with stress, as corticosteroid hormones are known to decrease resistance to infection5.

The increased stress of modern city life may be one of the factors predisposing to the very high incidence of common cold infections in our crowded cities.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments So. I have been extremely, stupidly busy. It's the end of the financial year for universities, as well as the end of academic year, as well as just Christmas craziness, and then wrapping up family birthdays as well.

I was just thinking this morning, how good it was that for once, Lexx and I weren't sick (if any one remembers the appendix fiasco of a few years ago, that was particularly what I was thinking about). And then driving to work this morning, I did a really quick head check, and pulled the muscle between my shoulder blades in my back. Excruciating pain, couldn't stretch it out, and it started hurting to breathe. So pulled over, switched with Lexx and he drove me home.

Spent the day on my back on the couch with an ice pack between my shoulder blades. Good news is, nearly finished my book! Still very painful though.

Sarah | 18549 comments Interesting research Joan. I know stress lowers the immune system so it doesn't surprise me.

I remember the appendix fiasco Rusalka! Typical about your shoulder after you were thanking your stars for you both being well.

I hope your husband gets rid of that bug soon and is home for Christmas.

My partner is off work today. I think we might not be going anywhere for Christmas at this rate. we were going to my aunts for a family gathering but she's literally just had a hip replacement and I wouldn't want her to catch our colds while she's recovering. She only got out of hospital yesterday.

Your plans sound exciting Sarah!

message 3783: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I've read a lot of research about how stress affects our bodies and it's not good. Our bodies weren't meant to tolerate extended periods of stress. Fortunately, things like meditation, mindfulness, and yoga can be helpful to alleviate some issues that come with chronic stress.

Rusalka - That muscle pull sounds bad. Hope it heals quickly.

Hope all these terrible colds and stomach bugs get better soon too. It seems like there's a lot going around.

message 3784: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sounds painful Rusalka. Hopefully you feel better soon!

message 3785: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I hope your pulled muscle eases up soon, Rusalka. It sounds very painful.

message 3786: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I was reading somewhere that the body reacts to stress in the same way it would react to a foreign body (like a virus or germ), and attacks it, so to speak. The problem is that there's nothing there to attack, so it causes breakdown of healthy systems. Dis-Ease equals disease.

Ouch on the pulled muscle Rusalka. I find that I'm more apt to pull muscles or put my back out when I'm stressed because I'm holding my body tense to begin with. Then it just needs one little wrong movement and bang! I hope you feel better soon.

You too, Sarah. Feel better soon. Good for you not wanting to spread it to your aunt. If more people were willing to stay home when they're sick, it could reduce the spread of it.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Sarah, a Donkey Sanctuary? I've never heard of one of those, it makes me smile just thinking about it though! I would love to do something that allowed me to work with animals. Ya know, maybe I need to really think about what I would need to do in order to actually pursue that dream instead of letting it just stay a wish.

Speaking of donkeys, my cousins have two of the cutest donkeys I have ever seen! I don't know what "breed" they are, but the are short and fuzzy. They also have Gypsy Vanner horses which are absolutely beautiful. I was going to try to add a picture, but it isn't cooperating. Instead, here is the link to my cousin's webpage. If you scroll down to where there are pictures of the horses, click on one of Porsche's pictures and then the right arrow until you come to the picture of Porsche and her donkey friend in the snow. http://wispybliss.com/our-gypsy-vanners/

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Hmm maybe stress and fatigue was to blame yesterday morning when I blacked out and fell in dishwasher and my bowl of cereal shattering luckily just the bowl and not breaking the dishwasher. Seems to have been a one time event. So far. Wife will make me see a Dr if it happens again.

Once I got up and was cleaning my mess my 3 year old daughter asks the simple question, "why did you make that big mess for daddy?"

message 3789: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Those horses are lovely Kristie. I thought donkeys were just donkeys. I didn't think there'd be different breeds like horses.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I hope your back get to feeling better, Rusalka!

Thanks for the link on the stress/cold connection, Joan. I've definitely noticed that correlation before. It's a vicious cycle too, stressed, get sick, get stressed because sick. That reminds me, when I was in South Carolina over the weekend, there was a motorcycle shop called Vicious Cycles. That's a pretty great name for a motorcycle shop in my opinion. LOL>

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I hope it is an isolated thing, Travis, but I agree with you wife that you should see a doctor if it happens again, or if you notice any other "weird" thing or symptom. Take care.
And your daughter is so cute...

message 3793: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Thank you =] I am excited to start.

I'm surprised I've only had 1 major cold this year, since doing more waking and incorporating yoga I think that has helped strengthened me physicaly as well as mentally and I'm feeling the benefits. I'd defo recommend yoga =D

Yep a Donkey Sanctuary, they apparently can sense emotions and the sanctuary where I'll be volunteering has disabled children come and it's like therapy for the children. When I first went for an induction and they found out I had depression the lady said they'd be all coming to see me, and I'm not joking they have about 24 donkeys and about 15 of them all lined up behind each other and made their way over to greet me =] it was really sweet.

They are lovely horses Kimey =] and the donkey is so cute hehe.

I remember learning a bit about breeding in the horse course. You can even get horse/donkey and zebra mixes too: zonkey and zorses. It's so interesting

message 3794: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I did not know that about donkeys sensing emotions. That is so fascinating!
There is a family near where I live that has a zebra/donkey hybrid. They call them zedonks. LOL.

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Zedonks hah that's funny =] If you type in zebroids into google images they looks so unusual and pretty zebra hybrids.

I didn't either until I went there, it is fascinating isn't it. I've always wanted to work with animals but I went down other paths as I originaly wanted to be a vet (but faint at the sight of blood) only a few years ago did I realise human blood I have a problem with not animal blood, I just care about helping the animal.

I put my dream on hold for far too long, struggled with depression and anxiety and worrying I wouldn't be able to do it until I'd recovered well now I'm finally on my way. If it's soemthing you really want to do, I'd defo go for it. I didn't realise there were so many career's to do with animals. That's something I found out later down the line, thanks to my ex, who encouraged me to look at other animal career options, that my dream of working with animals wasn't crushed cuz of the whole blood thing.

message 3797: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I've went down a very different path as well. I took an accounting class in highschool and really enjoyed it, so I pursued that as a career. I have a good job and make good money, but I don't love what I do. I've just never been able to pinpoint what else I would rather do. You sort of caused a light bulb to go off for me earlier today.

I've been reading a little bit into what I would have to do to get a veterinary or vet tech job. It would take 4-6 years of full time school for me to get a veterinary degree and I'm just not interested in that right now. To get into a vet tech program I would have to have 40 hours of clinic volunteer work before applying. And be able to commit to spending 20 hours per week at a clinic once accepted... I can't work an 8-5 office job and get in 20 hours of clinic time in as well. Vet offices just aren't open many hours outside of those that I already work. I'm not completely ruling the idea out yet. I would have to take some science/biology type pre-requisite classes before I could even think about applying to a vet tech program.
I haven't looked in to any other career possibilities yet, vet and veterinary nurse/tech are just the most obvious choices.

I know yes it's a lot of veterinary school, 5 years long for a veterinary degree here. I would have loved to be a vet, I don't think I could have done it. I can get through watching vet programmes on the TV but I don't think I could deal with having to put an animal down and making that decision. I'd be soo sad. I know there is a possibility I may see an exotic animla put to sleep at some point in working in a zo/sanctuary/wildlife reserve but ultimately I know I couldn't do it myself. I'd be crying too much. Even though I know in some cases its the best thing for the animal especially if they are in incredible pain and nothing can help them.

Defo have a look around, Animal Jobs Direct helped me out a lot and they have courses to study online in your own time.
