All of them had normal lives, in the sense of lives not very different of what they would have had. Nando Parrado is a successful businessman, and used to have a tv program about car races on Sundays. Roberto Canessa is a famous children cardiologist. He actually performed an electrocardiogram to my oldest son when he was still a baby. Gustavo Zerbino is a doctor too. Pedro Algorta studied business in Stanford and lives now in Argentina. And so on. They all had family too. In a documentary that was made in 2012 because of the 40 years of the crash, they were commenting that they are now 140 between survivors, children, and grandchildren, all of them think they were born in some way in the mountain. The 16 still call themselves the "brothers from the mountains", and get together very often. They also visit regularly the place in the mountain where the plane crashed.
So distressing and upsetting as the story is, I also find it very, very inspiring. There is a video recorded from the helicopter when they just find the wrecks of the plane, and you can see the survivors waving. That image makes me cry every single time I see it. They were so happy. I can't even imagine the joy they were feeling at that moment. I am sure I haven't been that happy never in all my life. And I had a pleasant life so far.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I think I saw a documentary about the story, Sandra. I definitely remember this picture you are showing. It is different thinking about the survivors in your light, and I agree with what Joan said.

I remember talking to my daughter about the book. She was reading a story about The Donner Party (a group of people in a wagon train who were trapped in the American west during the winter and how they survived).

thanks for that update Sandra - wow
Does anyone recall the miners who were trapped for a long time in Chile? I wonder how they are doing now.

message 3705: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I know there is a movie about the miners, and another one being shot. I don't know about any book, though.
Did you know that the rescue of the miners costed 20 millions of dollars? It always makes me happy to remember that the lives of this people was more important than the money, and it was paid what was necessary to get them out alive and safe.

message 3706: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am sure that some of the 20 millions of dollars may have come from donations, but the sad part of it is that "they" can pay so much money to rescue people but never choose to spend that kind of money to make the mines safer and the working/living conditions better. It is not in the profit/loss budget.

Is this not normal in the UK? I have always assumed you guys and us were the same with this. All businesses here shut down between Christmas and New Years. Unless you are in retail, hospitality or essential services like hospitals, you have 10 days off.

Everywhere I have worked this is mandated in your workplace agreement, with it given to you. Lexx's work is an American company, so they give you the days off, but you have to take the non-public holidays (4 days ish) out of your annual leave, which I think is extremely rude as they are told they are not allowed to work even if they wanted to save up those days.

Most of the 20 millions were donations, as far as I know. And unfortunately you are right. Make the mines safe has never been a priority anywhere.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments There was an article in our national news website about a photojournalist and his photos of mines this week, which was fascinating http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-12-10...

Then today I walked through our Australian National Centre for Latin American Studies and noticed they had huge prints on their walls of a photography competition on Latin America, and most were of mines in Bolivia. Not the winner but the the runner up, but beautiful and terrifying!

The book on the Chilean miners is Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine, and the Miracle That Set Them Free - I read it some time ago - it was good, interesting, would recommend it.

As you're interested, I'll expand on my "they were great" comment! It was their 20 year anniversary tour and i was impressed by how they still sound as good. Brian's goice hasn't changed at all and can manage all the songs, not perfect. Some bands who have been going some time start to sound band, so much so you can feel embarrassed for them. That didn't happen with placebo though. They were fantastic. It was a long set and they played a real mix of songs. They had a melancholy section and a party section. Thye also paid tribute to Leonard Cohen and David Bowie ewith both of them appearing on the video screens. They also weren't afraid to play with their songs, speeding some up and slowing some down. I liked that with some of them but with 46 degrees, i wanted them to play it the speed it's at kn the album. They are a great live band and they've really nailed it. The amount of guitars they had was unbelievable. So yes, they were great. I'll stop gushing now. Lol.

Many businesses still open during Christmas. Some factories close, some like Lexx's company will insist on holiday being used up during that time whilst others it's included. Where my dad used to work, their factory closed down over Christmas but where he works now, they open still. But on the whole, everywhere still runs as usual. My partner works for the council and they get an extra day off after boxing day but otherwise have to go in. He's taking the time off though this year. As i work for myself, i can do what i like. I used to work between xmas and new year but i would only ever have 1 or 2 clients which seemed a bit pointless so the last few years I've taken it off instead.

Then I thought about how much colder it has been for so many of the YLTO members already and wondered if you had gotten snow yet.

message 3723: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm on my way back home from work christmas dinner. I had to miss dessert again! It starts at 6, but before we get the first course it's 8. Then the main course is 9.30, and they came to ask about dessert at 10.15. I think at least 10 people already had to leave before that. I don't get why we can't start with the food at 6.30, or start the whole evening at 5 so that everything's an hour earlier. There are so many people who need to travel for some time and it's getting up early again tomorrow (but not me! I'm taking a day off!)

message 3724: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments That's frustrating, Peggy. Dessert is one of the best parts!
Do you have anything fun planned for your day off?

My husband ended up taking the job in South Carolina I was telling all of you about several weeks ago. He's a little over 8 hours away from home and can only come home every other weekend or so. He's been gone for two weeks and was planning on coming home this weekend, but he is going to have to work for a while on Saturday. I have some vacay time left at work so I'm taking off tomorrow and heading east to spend the weekend with him. Its a long way to go for just a short weekend, but I miss him so its worth it! I'm taking one of the dogs with me and I'm a little nervous about that, he isn't exactly trained nor does he listen. I bought what is basically a doggy seatbelt so hopefully it will keep him contained in the backseat. We haven't ever taken him on a long car ride so I have no idea how he will do. Fingers crossed he's a better passenger than he is roommate!

message 3725: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I know! Although with lactose-intolerance I usually get a kind of lousy dessert ;-)

Nope, I'm doing nothing at all, which is exactly how I intended this day to be. It was so crazily busy at work and I'm in need of a day for just myself. Sleep in, read, crochet, watch netflix, and that's about it :)

8 hours is quite a long drive! Enjoy your weekend together!!

Kimey - Good luck on your long drive. I hope your dog does well and it is a pleasant audiobook filled trip. I'm sure it will be wonderful for you to see your husband, even for a short time.

Peggy - Your day off sounds perfect! Enjoy it.

message 3729: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yikes! There's a huge fire in a factory 3 km (2 miles?) from here. The sky suddenly turned black like there was a huge storm coming, which was weird because today was supposed to be sunny and calm. Turned out to be black smoke covering a huge area. Then I got an alarm on my phone to keep doors and windows shut, and a bit later the air alarm went off! It's now not looking so bad anymore (no black smoke) but we still have to keep everything closed and it's moving towards the city centre so all shops have closed down (and were instructed to put people outside, which seems weird...). Trains also stopped running, so again I'm glad I stayed home today, as this is exactly the time I would have taken the train home.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So 5-8 years ago Pop Evil was a band just starting to get radio time and we invited them to play in our small city. They played in a local bar 3 separate times. Now they are big but credit Watertown as one of those places that helped them make it and are playing once again in a local bar tonight. $18 gets pop evil, red sun rising and citizen zero. The day tickets went on sale I basically waited for the clock to click on 10 am to buy them. While it's awesome seeing a big stage show to have a big band come play for 500 people? Maybe. It's awesome. Place isn't too big I don't know how many it holds. Theory of a Deadman has come here a few times and played for 300 people. It's because we have a military base we get these shows. They do it for the soldiers really

Sarah | 18550 comments I had a great day yesterday. It was the boater's Christmas dinner followed by the boater kid's Christmas party. We were in the pub from noon until 11pm and I'm feeling it now. It was a great time though. I have a full blown cold now too. Cold and a hangover together is a bad thing.

message 3740: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So last so last night the bands were playing a bar at a hotel. We decided just to book a room so we could both drink. This guy is watching football in the lobby and this other guy walks out asks him about the game then just sits down and starts watching. Guy #2 has tight pants, slipper looking shoes , half a shaved head and is wearing a pop evil sweatshirt. We go to room and I meant to google pop evil to see what band members look like. I even said to my wife no one wears tight pants like that I think he is in a band maybe pop evil but would he be by himself and actually wear a pop evil sweatshirt. Forgot to google it. We went down to show about hour and a half later. I kind of forgot about the whole thing. Well Pop Evil comes on stage and I'll be damned if it wasn't the guitarist of Pop Evil who was sitting in the lobby. Funny thing was lots of people were passing through lobby no one paid him any attention. Like they say best place to hide is out in the open. Now that I write this I realize we had a pop evil CD right in our car. I could have gone and got it and got it signed. But no I was too confident that a band member of a major band wouldn't just pop a squat in the lobby. Oh well my wife did find a pick on the floor from which band we don't know but red sun rising was out in the hallway and signed it for us.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments That was nice to rub shoulders like that with one of the band members. That was what I enjoyed about the folk festival I went to this summer. The artists were all so accessible. We chatted with quite a few of them as they wandered around the grounds.

Stephanie That's really cool, Travis!

Dave Matthews started his band in the town I just lived in, Charlottesville, VA. He apparently does a lot for that little town these days :-) we ate at the bar he used to work at, Miller's. Good little bar to go to if you are ever in that area :-)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Glad you enjoyed your day off, Peggy. Although that smoke and fire is scary! Very glad to hear no one was injured.

@Travis, that is awesome! PopEvil was supposed to have been the opener for a concert I went to this summer, but for some reason they weren't there. Saint Asonia was in their place so I couldn't complain too much.

The road trip with the dog wasn't too bad. What should have taken 8 hours took 9 with him though. I stopped and walked him several times to make sure there were no accidents or anything. And each time we got out of the car, he didn't want to get back in. We made it there and had a pretty great weekend with my husband. Turbo was much better behaved while we were there than he has been at home. I just don't understand the difference except that he was the only dog there. He stayed with my husband when I left. Hopefully he'll continue his better behavior when they come home this weekend.

She's also very attractive and very very good on the drums. She was awesome very talented. I've never seen a female drummer live before. There are a bunch on YouTube I've watched.

My partner and I were really ill last night. We both have this awful cold. We got no sleep. Had to keep getting up for more water as our throats were dry. My partner had a temperature and was boiling. Mine is slightly higher than normal but still not exactly a temperature. I'm feeling pretty crap. I don't remember ever being ill at the same time as my partner is. It sucks. So no work for me this week which is good in that it means I have 2 weeks off but it means I don't get any money. Fingers crossed we'll be on the mend by xmas day.
