Watcha Doin' - 2016.1

I remember talking to my daughter about the book. She was reading a story about The Donner Party (a group of people in a wagon train who were trapped in the American west during the winter and how they survived).

thanks for that update Sandra - wow
Does anyone recall the miners who were trapped for a long time in Chile? I wonder how they are doing now.

Did you know that the rescue of the miners costed 20 millions of dollars? It always makes me happy to remember that the lives of this people was more important than the money, and it was paid what was necessary to get them out alive and safe.

I checked this thread to find out this. So very glad, and so very jealous!!

Is this not normal in the UK? I have always assumed you guys and us were the same with this. All businesses here shut down between Christmas and New Years. Unless you are in retail, hospitality or essential services like hospitals, you have 10 days off.
Everywhere I have worked this is mandated in your workplace agreement, with it given to you. Lexx's work is an American company, so they give you the days off, but you have to take the non-public holidays (4 days ish) out of your annual leave, which I think is extremely rude as they are told they are not allowed to work even if they wanted to save up those days.

Most of the 20 millions were donations, as far as I know. And unfortunately you are right. Make the mines safe has never been a priority anywhere.

Then today I walked through our Australian National Centre for Latin American Studies and noticed they had huge prints on their walls of a photography competition on Latin America, and most were of mines in Bolivia. Not the winner but the the runner up, but beautiful and terrifying!

Didn't read the article yet, Rusalka, but the pictures are spine-chilling. Thanks for sharing.

The book on the Chilean miners is Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine, and the Miracle That Set Them Free - I read it some time ago - it was good, interesting, would recommend it.

I found a documentary yesterday that I plan to watch, probably next weekend.

You're welcome :-) I hope it's good. It's amazing what they went through, particularly how they interacted with each other down below.

As you're interested, I'll expand on my "they were great" comment! It was their 20 year anniversary tour and i was impressed by how they still sound as good. Brian's goice hasn't changed at all and can manage all the songs, not perfect. Some bands who have been going some time start to sound band, so much so you can feel embarrassed for them. That didn't happen with placebo though. They were fantastic. It was a long set and they played a real mix of songs. They had a melancholy section and a party section. Thye also paid tribute to Leonard Cohen and David Bowie ewith both of them appearing on the video screens. They also weren't afraid to play with their songs, speeding some up and slowing some down. I liked that with some of them but with 46 degrees, i wanted them to play it the speed it's at kn the album. They are a great live band and they've really nailed it. The amount of guitars they had was unbelievable. So yes, they were great. I'll stop gushing now. Lol.

Many businesses still open during Christmas. Some factories close, some like Lexx's company will insist on holiday being used up during that time whilst others it's included. Where my dad used to work, their factory closed down over Christmas but where he works now, they open still. But on the whole, everywhere still runs as usual. My partner works for the council and they get an extra day off after boxing day but otherwise have to go in. He's taking the time off though this year. As i work for myself, i can do what i like. I used to work between xmas and new year but i would only ever have 1 or 2 clients which seemed a bit pointless so the last few years I've taken it off instead.

The rest of the year it's hot and then it is just a matter of how humid it is going to be and is it going to rain.

Do you have anything fun planned for your day off?
My husband ended up taking the job in South Carolina I was telling all of you about several weeks ago. He's a little over 8 hours away from home and can only come home every other weekend or so. He's been gone for two weeks and was planning on coming home this weekend, but he is going to have to work for a while on Saturday. I have some vacay time left at work so I'm taking off tomorrow and heading east to spend the weekend with him. Its a long way to go for just a short weekend, but I miss him so its worth it! I'm taking one of the dogs with me and I'm a little nervous about that, he isn't exactly trained nor does he listen. I bought what is basically a doggy seatbelt so hopefully it will keep him contained in the backseat. We haven't ever taken him on a long car ride so I have no idea how he will do. Fingers crossed he's a better passenger than he is roommate!

Nope, I'm doing nothing at all, which is exactly how I intended this day to be. It was so crazily busy at work and I'm in need of a day for just myself. Sleep in, read, crochet, watch netflix, and that's about it :)
8 hours is quite a long drive! Enjoy your weekend together!!

Kimey - Good luck on your long drive. I hope your dog does well and it is a pleasant audiobook filled trip. I'm sure it will be wonderful for you to see your husband, even for a short time.
Peggy - Your day off sounds perfect! Enjoy it.

That looks dismal, Peggy. I hope everyone is okay.

Dave Matthews started his band in the town I just lived in, Charlottesville, VA. He apparently does a lot for that little town these days :-) we ate at the bar he used to work at, Miller's. Good little bar to go to if you are ever in that area :-)

@Travis, that is awesome! PopEvil was supposed to have been the opener for a concert I went to this summer, but for some reason they weren't there. Saint Asonia was in their place so I couldn't complain too much.
The road trip with the dog wasn't too bad. What should have taken 8 hours took 9 with him though. I stopped and walked him several times to make sure there were no accidents or anything. And each time we got out of the car, he didn't want to get back in. We made it there and had a pretty great weekend with my husband. Turbo was much better behaved while we were there than he has been at home. I just don't understand the difference except that he was the only dog there. He stayed with my husband when I left. Hopefully he'll continue his better behavior when they come home this weekend.

She's also very attractive and very very good on the drums. She was awesome very talented. I've never seen a female drummer live before. There are a bunch on YouTube I've watched.

You beat me to it, Peggy! I was just about to post the same thing ;)

My partner and I were really ill last night. We both have this awful cold. We got no sleep. Had to keep getting up for more water as our throats were dry. My partner had a temperature and was boiling. Mine is slightly higher than normal but still not exactly a temperature. I'm feeling pretty crap. I don't remember ever being ill at the same time as my partner is. It sucks. So no work for me this week which is good in that it means I have 2 weeks off but it means I don't get any money. Fingers crossed we'll be on the mend by xmas day.

All of them had normal lives, in the sense of lives not very different of what they would have had. Nando Parrado is a successful businessman, and used to have a tv program about car races on Sundays. Roberto Canessa is a famous children cardiologist. He actually performed an electrocardiogram to my oldest son when he was still a baby. Gustavo Zerbino is a doctor too. Pedro Algorta studied business in Stanford and lives now in Argentina. And so on. They all had family too. In a documentary that was made in 2012 because of the 40 years of the crash, they were commenting that they are now 140 between survivors, children, and grandchildren, all of them think they were born in some way in the mountain. The 16 still call themselves the "brothers from the mountains", and get together very often. They also visit regularly the place in the mountain where the plane crashed.
So distressing and upsetting as the story is, I also find it very, very inspiring. There is a video recorded from the helicopter when they just find the wrecks of the plane, and you can see the survivors waving. That image makes me cry every single time I see it. They were so happy. I can't even imagine the joy they were feeling at that moment. I am sure I haven't been that happy never in all my life. And I had a pleasant life so far.
