Chocolate that has white spots like that have generally been sitting for a long time, possibly last year's stock?

message 3652: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Maybe that's it! I'll check the expiration date when I get home.

message 3653: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments That's what I was going to say. White spots = old chocolate, specially if it crumbles when you bite it.

message 3654: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments When I worked at Home Care (which provides in home medical care) the nurses used to get lots of "white" chocolate given to them at Christmas. Quite a few of the seniors would put chocolate into the freezer, thinking it would preserve it.

message 3655: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments You could make your own beer/wine advent calendars!

message 3656: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I had never even heard of advent calendars before pinterest. There are some really cute ideas out there!

The white spots on chocolate doesn't necessarily mean it is old or bad (but can be a sign that it is). It is called chocolate bloom and can even appear on fresh chocolates.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments It has been one crazy busy week and I'm so ready for some relaxation! I need to do some Christmas shopping though. I told my mom that she and I could go somewhere Sunday so I'm thinking tomorrow may be a nice lazy day mixed in with some household chores. Tonight I need to work on some of the jewelry I'm making for gifts. But really, I figure tonight will find me curled up in the recliner with a book or watching Netflix. I can't wait!

message 3658: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I may have looked on Pinterest and Amazon for advent calendars for dogs, lol!

Kristie | 19138 comments Have fun, Travis! My hubby and I are headed out to see "Elf the Musical" tonight. :)

message 3661: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Have fun both of you! It's already 10.30pm here and I'm very happy to be at home and not going anywhere.

I did go to my sister's ultrasound today in which the baby's gender was revealed. It's a boy! It was so awesome to hear the baby's heart beat and see how he looks. His head and arms and spine etc were obvious, but the ultrasound lady also showed us his bladder, kidneys, stomach. Amazing!!

message 3662: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Sounds fun Kristie. My wife has a backless dress on. I am learning how to tape the gaps to her with clear double sided dress and lingerie tape. Yeah. Won't be getting hired to do this permanently I suck at it. This was following my poor ezcuse of tying a bow at back of dress for her.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Beautiful Auntie Peggy! :)

message 3664: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments Hahaha, Travis! At least you're trying to help. Lol

Congrats, Peggy! That must have been amazing to see. I remember the ultrasounds with my girls, just fascinating and wonderful.

It is just 5:30pm here now and we are headed to dinner before the show.

message 3665: by Joan (new)

Joan Travis, You have solved a mystery for me, I never knew such tape existed.

message 3666: by Joan (new)

Joan Peggy, that's exciting. Will he be your first neef?

message 3667: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Going around the group's page I found my first comment on YLTO, on November 16th, 2013. It seems a lot, but at the same time I feel like I have been member of this group since I was born. :)

message 3668: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I didn't know such tape existed Travis. I will be trying that out! Funny to be learning of it from you. lol.

Thanks Peggy for your paper link. I'll have a read of it in the week. Sounds like a great experience you had with your sister today.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Oh you guys don't know about boob tape? It makes a lot more sense when you look at those dresses and wonder how it stays on/covering important bits. Tape. Pretty much double sided sticky tape.

message 3680: by Joan (new)

Joan Okay so here is my word of caution, if you staple your bridesmaid's dress to your bra, in the middle of the ceremony you will find that it scratches unbearably - and you will not be able to do anything about it.
Trust me I know this.

Peggy, I google translate, I don't speak Dutch :)

Sarah | 18550 comments I put our Christmas lights up on the outside of our boat today. I'm very pleased with them. It's the first time we've had them. They are in full on techno mode. just have to wait for the wreath for the front which I'll get on Friday and we'll be set. I also got to stroke a reindeer today. At sainsbury of all places!

message 3683: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments That's what I'm doing today too, putting up Christmas lights. We've got the front yard done and moving on to the back before getting the tree in the house. It's looking great.
I did not get to pet any reindeer but I do have a couple feet of snow to make things Christmassy.

message 3684: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm jealous of your snow Dawn. It wouldn't surprise me if we had some this year. It is definitely colder than the last couple of winter's we've had. I want it to snow so i can take some pictures of our boat in the snow, then i want it to instantly melt so i can still get to work ok without falling on my arse or in the canal.

message 3685: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Putting up lights when the snow comes up to your knees makes thing a little difficult but it's gonna look awesome tonight.

The last time we remember getting this much snow was 18 years ago, so it's been quite the adventure. When you get snow over there doesn't the country shut down?? At least that's what I remember from the news.

message 3686: by Joan (new)

Joan Sarah, do the canals freeze? Like in Hans Brinker and the Golden Skates?

We've got the cold, if you'd like that Sarah. :)

Sarah | 18550 comments @Dawn - if we get snow, we get a few inches max around here. It does snow more than that up on the hills, especially in Wales and Scotland. And yes, when it snows, the UK comes to a grinding halt. Trains and buses stop running. No one wants to drive to work because it's dangerous, councils are stretched to grit the roads, schools shut down because teachers can't get in, etc. etc. Basically, we're not prepared for any extreme mainly because it doesn't happen very often. If we had a consistent, snowy winter, we might all put chains on our tyres or get better tyres or whatever. We are getting more of the extreme weather for longer though now so who knows what will happen in the next decade - perhaps we'll be a bit more prepared for snow in the future.

@Joan - yes the canals freeze. The canal has been frozen 4 days this winter so far. That's a record for us since being on the boat. Last year it only froze for 2 days through the whole winter. Winter is just getting started here so I think we're in for some more. It's not firm enough to be able to ice skate on though. However I've seen pictures of a winter about 5 years ago in which the canal froze solidly and you could walk on it (and therefore ice skate on it).

@Janice. I told my partner how cold it is where you are at the moment. I just can't comprehend how cold that is or how cold it would feel. It's cold here when it's -5C. I'm happy to leave the cold, just want a little snow. lol.

I'm getting excited.I'm off to see Placebo tonight in Wales!

message 3689: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments It's a balmy -14C today. I hope it stays that way. It would be better for driving to my dad's at Christmas than if it was down around -30C.

message 3690: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments @Sarah - I think my sister happened to be living around London when it snowed one year and she thought it was hilarious when the pub patrons started talking about snow brushes and ice scrappers like they were a new invention.

@Janice - this is what you get for living so bloody far north. It's a sweet -2 down in the Fraser Valley today, and we never get -30!! On the other hand that means that we're also very unprepared and 80% of us don't have the right tires or enough winter clothes, nor do we keep lock de-icer in our purses, which would have come in handy a few times this year already.

message 3691: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (trudyan) | 1779 comments Dawn, I live in the Fraser Valley too. Our street is a school drop-off area, and this morning, there were virtually no cars. Maybe parents have deemed it too cold (at -1!) or too icy to drive. Or maybe they are still recovering from the bit of snow shovelling they had to do on the weekend.

Janice, I have spent most of my life in northern BC and Saskatchewan, so have had my share of real Canadian winter. In a way, it is easier than here, because the community is prepared for it. On the other hand, I will stick with where I am! Stay warm. :-)

message 3692: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments The roads are very quiet today, I think I saw more people on the roads both days of the weekend, especially Saturday. Maybe they were just getting prepared to be snowed in??

My formerly Northern BC living co-workers find us all very amusing down here, but same as you, would rather be here where it's warmer. :)

message 3693: by Joan (new)

Joan Our winters on Long Island are fairly mild. When it dips down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-17C) the weather forecasters blame the Canadians for sending the cold air :)

message 3694: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Ha, that's right. We are very nice and like to share!

message 3695: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I used to live in Calgary and I really miss the chinooks. It could dip to -30, but you knew in a few days there would be a reprieve. It played havoc with headaches though with the constant switching of the barometric pressure.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I'm having a revival in my passion for the story of the Uruguayan plane that crashed in the Andes in 1972, and 16 people survived in the mountains for 72 days. Maybe some of you remember the movie and the book: Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors. I saw some good documentaries this weekend. Unfortunately only one with subtitles in English:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXRJU...

It is done in 11 small parts of about 10 minutes each. I think the story is amazing, and very inspiring.

I remember reading the book when it first came out, Sandra. It was awful, but so hard to stop reading! It took me years to get over thinking about it. I NEVER wanted to read another non-fiction book after that. It was a long, long time before I did too.

message 3698: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments It is a fascinating story, Cherie. I read the book when I was 15 years old. Like every Uruguayan this is a story I was born with. The survivors is people I learned to see around. I guess that it is the part that I love most of the story, seeing them having a normal life, similar to the life they would have had if the plane hadn't crashed. I find myself coming back to the story from time to time. His weekend was one of this those moments.
The video I am linking is completely subtitled in Spanish, and very emotional.

message 3699: by Joan (new)

Joan Sandra, Somehow I never thought about the survivors having lives/existing after the book ended, people like you seeing them on the street or in a shop. The idea makes the story a little easier to think about.

message 3700: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I wrote a post. I lost it. So cutting a long story short, Placebo were amazing last night!

Done all my Christmas shopping now ready for my parents to collect them on Friday so they have them for Christmas day morning.

Off to visit family on friday with my parents, doing the Christmas rounds. Then on Sunday we have a boaters Christmas roast dinner. I'm excited about this. There are a lot of us going so it should be good. The boater kids Christmas party follows and then it's followed by drinking in the pub.

Winding down with work now. Annoyingly I'm getting a lot of cancellations which usually happens at this time of year. I've decided not to work between xmas and new year this year so I'll have a nice break.
