Lynn | 2974 comments I so don't want to be at work today, I need it to be over so I can go home and watch the new Gilmore Girls!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yes! That's tonight!

Unfortunately boyfriend is home and even though I can watch it, I don't think I can do it in much peace and quiet. My sisters is coming over tomorrow though, maybe we can dump our men somewhere else (in the kitchen, making dinner for us?) while we watch GG.

Oh gosh Laura, where have you been? ;) There's been a huge build up to this.

Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life
There will be four episodes in total, with each episode named after the seasons Spring, Summer, Autumn (Fall probably seen as it's the US) and Winter. I think Winter is the first Episode.

Each episode is expected to run around 90 minutes (so like four movies), on Netflix.

And we finally get to know what the famous 'last four words' will be that Amy Sherman-Palladino said she always knew she was going to end on.

I am extremely excited by this, my weekend has been blocked out in my diary for months so I have no distractions lol

message 3505: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments Lol I haven't watched barely any tv but baseball and football for years! I haven't even seen all the GG shows on DVD, I just know I'll want to! I had no idea this was coming, but thanks for the info! :))

message 3506: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Just had to do some last minute hat and glove buying in prep for tomorrow. It's looking like it might be pretty chilly in Amsterdam. I'm getting all excited. We have a walking tour booked in for the afternoon tomorrow but we don't bahve anything else planned yet. I like to see what the tours cover then i know what other bits to check out the next day.

Sorry you have to work. : (
Thanks for the reminder though. I had totally forgot about it, although I watched the entire original series this summer on Netflix.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I just realized I don't think I ever saw the latest season(s) of GG. I think I was travelling during that year and never caught up afterwards. Ah well, I'm sure I can still follow these new ones. I watched the trailer and it seems everyone is in it!

Netflix still has the entire series available to watch (in the US anyway). I don't think it would make a big difference to have missed the last season, Peggy. Maybe you could just watch the final episode?

Stephanie Thanks jaxnsmom!

Yep! Getting settled in. We have all our home stuff. We had housemates for about 3 1/2 weeks! Friends of ours moved here as well from Virginia so they stayed with us until they found a place. They have a 15 year old son. He was a handful to say the least :( just glad he is out of our house :)

message 3524: by Tasha (last edited Nov 28, 2016 04:34AM) (new)

Tasha I remember when when my stepson was that age, it wasn't always so easy. When he turned 18 it was not fun at all! We are lucky so far with my son now who is 14yo. He is a pleasure to have around!

That's fun that you had friends move down there with you. :)

Yes it is nice we have some friends living here now:) one of my friends from HS lives here as well but her family is moving to Louisiana at the beginning of next month :(
The hubby is in the military so off to Louisiana they go!

I'm bummed but excited for them at the same time :)

I'm SO JEALOUS! Shinedown is one of my favs. and I can only imagine what a great show FFDP and Sixx will put on!
Can't wait to hear what an awesome time you have.

I've been so busy the past couple of weeks. Mainly just at work, but the Thanksgiving holiday was pretty hectic too. In a good way though.
We didn't exactly go black Friday shopping, but we did make a big purchase on Friday. My husband and I got a new Polaris RZR. It is a side-by-side all-terrain-vehicle. We used to have a side-by-side but sold it and I have really missed going off-roading with our friends. We decided this is our early (and only) Christmas gift we are getting for each other. All though to be completely honest, I'll probably still get him something.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments As Lions were real good. Sixx am was real good Shinedown was good but volume was too loud for size of building. Woulf be better outdoors. Five finger death punch. I don't know. Buzz kill tonight. Ivan Moody was in some kind of funk still and a lot of people left anf when you looked down at the floor nobody was moving or even had their hands up. I feel like my best friend died instead of his right now. I've never exoerienced such a thing how the frontman can kill a crowd. The rest of the band was giving it their all. Ivan said he almost cancelled because his head ain't right. It was weird.

message 3538: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Wow sounds a bit mad Travis. It's not fair on the crowd when bands don't give it their all. I think I'd rather they cancelled or postponed a gig instead. I've seen bands at festivals I've loved but they've been awful and I've gone to check out another band instead. Funny I've not heard of the Uk band. I will check them out though now.

message 3539: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments So Amsterdam. We had a good weekend. The city is beautiful, interesting and full of history. We especially liked it because of the canals. We went on a walking tour which was great and to the canal museum. We went to vondelpark further out of town too. Got to go on a ferry a couple of times a day as our hotel was across the river. I've realised that i don't particularly like traveling with big groups of people. It's like herding cats. Especially when everyone wants to do different things. I'd like to go again but next time just me and my partner so we can avoid all the touristy, expensive, trendy places and the ridiculous crowds. Saturday night out in the city was full on. Way too many people. And the atmosphere was wrong. Especially as you walked through the red light district. I couldn't believe how the men there acted, just standing and staring. It's like they'd become glued to the floor and couldn't move. Like they'd never seen tits before. It was all very uncomfortable. I found it quite overwhelming. That is something i do not want to experience again and would avoid if we visit again. I'm pleased (not the right word) i experienced it as it made me think a lot about prostitution/sex trade/trafficking etc and it helped me clarify my views on it. Back to the positives though. Loved the double decker trains. The genever and the genever tasting bar. We had Indonesian food for the first time which was amazing. Saw wild parakeets swarming in the park. And starling murmerations which I've wanted to see for a long time.

message 3540: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sounds like you had a good time overall Sarah. I agree about travelling in larger groups, especially when there's the need to have to stick together all the time or you have the feeling you should make everybody happy. I also prefer going away with just my partner.

Did you have the 'rijsttafel' in the Indonesian restaurant?

message 3541: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments No we didn't have that. It was just us two eating there and being veggie limits choice a bit. we had tofu and bamboo shoots in a spicy coconut sauce with fried rice. Very tasty. I will be looking for Indonesian food local to here now.

message 3542: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Glad you had a good time in Amsterdam, Sarah.

message 3543: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I'm not good at traveling with big groups. It is hard to have a schedule that makes everyone happy. I totally prefer to travel with my husband. At this point we really understand each other, and have our own way of doing "tourism".

I don't think I would like to visit the red light district. Prostitution is something I have problems having an open mind on. The abuse is so clear. I'm not trying to be argumentative here, just saying that I'm sure I would have felt uncomfortable too.

message 3544: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've been on a few trips with my family (mom, dad, sister and her partner) and my partner's family. We had fun, but I find it so much more stressful than travelling just with my partner. Like you say Sandra, we have our own way of travelling and it works for us, but when other's are involved, you have to change your rituals. We leave each other very free when we travel with my family, it's not like we have to do the same thing all together if some of us don't like it, but still. It's a family holiday so you want to spend time together :) Also, I really need some me-time, just be in my room with a book for an hour or so, I can't be among people and be social all the time. But when we are on holiday, I also want to make sure others, especially my mom and dad, are having a good time, so I feel like I should play a game with my dad or have a chat with my mom, especially when my sister is already doing something else.

Haha, that turned out to be a longer story than I thought. Anyway, I get the feeling ;-)

message 3545: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm not overly good at travelling with a large group of people either. I also don't think I could go on a coach tour or anything like that. The idea of having every day planned out for you just doesn't appeal to me. I like to have the freedom to do my own thing.

message 3546: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I think I would bypass the red light district personally. Sounds too dirty for my taste. Amd I don't mean dirty as prudish but literally dirty. Like std dirty. I picture it right along with visions of used heroin needles. Doesn't appeal to me. On the other hand. Mentioning red light now has "roxanne" by the police in my head which is alright

message 3547: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments It's the first time travelling in a group for me. Some aspects were good but on the whole, I like being able to do exactly what I want. I got a bit frustrated the first day but then we started to do our own thing a bit more although not totally. We were only there for 2 whole days which isn't much time to explore a city so we wanted to make the most of the time we had there but everyone else wanted to just chill out with each other. We can do that in England for a lot cheaper. lol.

As for the prostitution Sandra. I think it's a good thing it's legalised as it does make it safer for the women and doesn't criminalize them. As far as I understand, they are all freelance which is a much better position for them than in countries where it's illegal and are often run by pimps. I knew that there would be some scantily clad women in windows but not quite to the extent it was. It was so in your face. I think it could be toned down a lot. It was mainly how other people reacted that I found disgusting. And I'm not a prude either. Basically, it makes me feel sad (and a whole heap of other emotions) that women have to do that, legal or not, in order to make money.

message 3548: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Sarah wrote: "Basically, it makes me feel sad (and a whole heap of other emotions) that women have to do that, legal or not, in order to make money. "

That's totally my point. I don't consider myself a prude either, but for me the whole idea of the "consent between adults" is diffuse here. It is not totally clear to me how honest this consent is if the women (or men, of course) are consenting because of the need of money. Women in a window? How objectifying and degrading is that? Difficult to agree that prostitution is a choice. It is not in the huge majority of the cases. No. She is not having a good time. No. She is not a sexually free person.
I read many years ago a long article in a Uruguayan magazine about prostitution in suburbs of the capital city. It really broke my heart. I have been very sensitive to this topic since then.
I agree with you, Sarah, that things are even worse when it is illegal.

Sarah | 18550 comments Your comments echo my thoughts Sandra.

message 3550: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Only skim read, but glad you had fun though Sarah. I agree, travelling groups is always hard. And Indonesian is great.

Just throwing my two cents in, here prostitution is legal. They have a union, they have then have the ability to demand things from their employers such as std checks as part of their employment. They also have protection and a voice. Would I have a problem with the red light district in Amsterdam? Most probably, as I don't like things waved in my face (literally after the stripper at my niece's hens night... urgh)

Are they still victimised and ignored by authorities here? Definitely. Are there still illegal rackets and rings going on? Hell yes. But there is a safe and legal way to do it, which means more is safe and legal than not. It's the world's oldest profession, and not going away so may as well protect those who work in it. Now looking at reasons women join the profession is another issue, although with it legal takes away some of those reasons. I have known people to work in the adult industry as it was good money, and they were happy to make that choice.

I do like taking away the illegality as well means they can organise and work together. We've had a group of men who are going through the courts now in my city, preying on prostitutes. But it's come to light, that they have their own system to check on "johns" as a collective, and flag people as "ugly mugs" of those who are violent or aggressive or creepy. Which means others won't take your business. Take away stigmatisation and criminality and people look after each other.
