Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments I've just spent the last three evenings attending the Banff Film Festival World Tour. Awesome films!

My friend and I have decided to make this an annual event. This is the 3rd year we've gone. I'm kind of sad that it's over now for another year.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I was at a drumming circle a few years ago and someone had brought a didgeridoo. I could hardly get one note out of it. Talk about lung power! And I didn't know you need circular breathing to play it. Wow! That's talent!

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I love what everyone's said about Bowie. I was dancing to him in the clubs back in the 70's and 80's... and probably 90s. I love his music and am sad he's gone to wherever in the universe we end up.

Sarah | 18549 comments Well said Lynda! Every newspaper here yesterday had him on the front page.

I agree with Janice's old school heavy metal bands.

message 308: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Ok. So we would label older heavy metal about the same then. I consider pre 80's older heavy metal. 80's is just heavy metal. Once we get into the 90's to present day just metal or hard rock depending on the sound.

However the consumption figures, while may be true for the 1980s, is incredibly untrue for now. But thanks for the rest of it Peggy. I blame Paul Hogan for so much.

message 315: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I am just getting started in the world of pod casts. I like to listen to the extreme Atheist Penn Jillette. Is that weird. i, a Christian enjoy an atheist. I have no problem with making fun at religion. Of course he tackles a lot of other things. Still the controversy comes because he pokes fun at religion. Personally I think people are too uptight. If your religion is so strong how can you be threatened by aj atheist. Be what you want. I'm still gonna listen to the wacky atheist

message 316: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 13, 2016 04:18AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Agree. Listening to other people's point of view and rationalising your own thoughts or beliefs will never be a bad thing. Blogs thinks this, so how does that relate to my world? Intellectualism is something that in the past was the domain of the religious and now it seems to be shunned. Push your beliefs, and if they keep standing, then go for it!

I used to do this as a full on Christian, and used to get told off for it. Why invite temptation? It's not. I want to understand further and get my head around things like cultural, societal, philosophical, cultural context. Understanding is the key. As an atheist or on a moderate day, agnostic, for completely and utterly different reasons, I still do the same. I've read up on so many religions and their above to understand.

Push it. Push it real good.

message 317: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I know people. Born Christians. They reached a point and said I don't get this I am an Atheist until I see the light, if you will, and will return to Christianity. 3-4 years now they haven't seen it yet and maybe never will. It doesn't matter. The point is having sonething to believe in if you don't believe it it won't work. Now I haven't been to church in a good 15 years. Maybe a couple Christmas eve services but thats it. Now these atheists they go to church almost every sunday. It seems incredible yet in their way of not believing but searching they probably get more out of the service than the believers because they are listening. Also I think it may be just that it feels good. Church is uplifting. Or at least should be. It is a very positive place. Esoecially if the hymns are upbeat. If you go on melancholy hymn day it sucks vut most of the time when you leave you should feel good. Mingle with the congregation and socialize. Someone who is having a rough time or deoressed my first thought is go to church. Not even for the religion. Just go to absorb the positive energy and feel good. Whether you go or not up to you I don't care I don't even attend myself

message 318: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Which is very interesting. And every single community is different. I love what you say above, and I believe it should be like this. And as a singer, I miss the music and the communal singing (where on earth else do you get this? And it's fun and amazing).

But my pushing factor out was the community. I loved it, but they didn't particularly love me or my decisions it seems. And that is only my experience. I just get nostalgic when you say the above, Travis.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments In this podcast the one guy tells of his trip to Belgium. In a chocolate store he hears a woman ask for a chocolate vagina. Sure enough there are chocolate vaginas and penises, but no breasts in this shop. He believes these to be true molds. They look comoletely anatomically correct. He then researched and learned that you take a large amoubt of cocoa powder and press sonething, lets say a penis into it. The cocoa powder will hold the form and you pour chocolate into it. Once dried you brush off the cocoa oowder and wallah tou have your mold. He did try it but he used a thomas the train for a birthday oarty. Juat clean the item and use the cocoa powder as the mold. Can't really have a penis or vagina on site for each oiece of chocolate. Gross

message 320: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments That is so true Rusalka and it happens. This community that is supposed to welcome everyone with open arms they do that. They shun some or make them feel out of their place. As if there is a single person in that community who has never left a skid mark in their undies. In fact it is usually the ones with the skeletons in the closet that lead the rally to run soneone out to make themselves feel good. Its messed up

This is not true. I have been to Belgium and EVERY chocolate shop (and there are so many) have chocolate breasts as well as other bits in the WINDOW of the shop. Which is a bit of a shock when you're not used to it. When did I go there... 2012?

message 325: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments He says if you were to pick 1 country in Europe choose Belgium. He said it is like fake Europe. Like everyone just pretends to speak a different language. Just say hi how are and boom they switch right to English. What he means is they don't make you feel like a tourist if you speak English they just cross over on the spot without the awkward let me get out my dictionary and ask if anyone soeaks English moment

message 326: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 13, 2016 05:36AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Depends what part of Belgium. The "capital" of the European Union is Brussels (why I was there) so where all the administration and government departments are. Because of this, Brussels is in the three official languages of the EU (and you can only be employed by the EU if you speak all three): English, German and French. This is awesome if you speak one, and speak a splattering of another (like me with English and French) as you can check your words.

I went to Bruges for a few days though, which is in the Flemish part of the country. They speak Flemish (not Dutch), and then may possibly speak Dutch, French, German or English. I found English was the safe other language as the only country that hadn't occupied them. So beautiful but harder, but everyone speaks something, more than you.

Believe this changes depending which border you approach too (French, Dutch, Germany) on what is the main language.

Amazing buildings, good food and amazing beer though. I had fun.

You might have to resort to miming Lynda ;)

message 330: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (missvirginia) | 96 comments I hope you'll feel all better soon Lynda!

I too have lost my voice, but for an entirely other reason.
Yesterday I have started something I've always wanted to try, but never had the guts to do. My first ever acting class! Oh my gosh, it was so much fun! I should have done it sooner. :-D

It totally took everybody out of their comfortzone (just a little bit since it's only the first lesson). Sobbing because your bunny died; looking through rose coloured glasses because your madly in love; walking in a pannic through a dark scary forrest; feeling ecstatic because you just won the jackpot in the lotery; arguing in a bakery because your both having the worst day of your life ever. Just to name a few of the rollercoaster of emotions presented to us, played by us, in just 2 hours time.

So, as a result: no voice (from all the screaming and yelling and crying), aching muscles (from all the running around, throwing myself on the floor, etc.), and a whole lot of happiness :-D

message 331: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee @Lynda glad to hear so, ginger always does the trick for a scratchy throat. Try it with warm milk, it should help -I prefer boiling it a little with the milk-

@Sharon that sounds fun .. Love the ideas .. Keep it up

@Rusalka thats one advantage in your side to visit a place with "Multi-Language-Speakers". It does feels awkward looking for the right word to use in different language .. Where is my dictionary? And then .. Bam .. You're not sure how to pronounce that word correctly!

message 335: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments https://youtu.be/9_Iq9CWuqMM. It isnt what song you expect it to be

message 336: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I remember that song, Travis.

And I loved Deep Purple (still do). They are known best for Smoke On the Water and I played it and the album over and over. I still get psyched up when I hear that song on our classic rock station.

Speaking of chocolate private bits, my brother owned a candy shop and made his own molded chocolates. The naughty ones were kept behind the counter, out of sight. He didn't have vaginas tho! He did have naked men and women and painstakingly painted all their parts. They were kind of cute with their little pink nipples and all their furry parts. Ok, I'm a weirdo!

message 337: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Painted all those little parts. Wow that must take some time. Sounds similar to the stuff at a local chocolate store. Small place but make all these little whatevers. We got the kids easter bunny ones that were all painted

Yeah Smoke on the Water just has seen so much radio time.
My favorite is highway star. Also like woman from Tokyo a lot

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have just heard on the news that actor Alan Rickman has died of cancer aged 69. Very sad :(

message 340: by Tasha (new)

Tasha oh no! I just googled him and realize that he was Professor Snape! He was so good in that role. So sad. :(

message 341: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Really he was 69 I wouldn't have thought him that old, but the older I getter the younger older people look. Now in my 30's 70 is the new 40. If you kbow what I mean

message 342: by Tasha (new)

Tasha oh I know...believe me, I know. I'm in my 40s and it's definitely the new 30s. ;)

message 343: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments That's sad about Alan Rickman. I really liked him as an actor and particularly liked his voice. He did great in the Potter films but I think my favourite with him in was Dogma. That film cracks me up.

Strange that both David Bowie and Alan Rickman died aged 69!

Thanks for that Corey Taylor Ace of Spades link Travis!

message 344: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I have been a slipknot fan sincethe early agressive days of the slipknot slipknot album, but I almost wish Corey Taylor had never been with them. The damage to his vocal cords from the aggression can't have been good and it amazes me his ability to sing with stonesour and do all these cover songs so well. I just think what he could have been without all the early strain on him. Then again that also has defi ed his sound and given him that whiskey voice

message 345: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie RIP Alan Rickman! Such a great actor.

"After all this time?"

"Always."

message 346: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I like Corey Taylor. I didn't like Slipknot when they were first around. I thought they were a bit gimmicky and I didn't think they'd last. But I was wrong and I'm glad I was. I really like their most recent album. I've not listened to any Stone Sour. Will have to check it out. Favourite collaboration at the moment is (spoilered for bad language (view spoiler) Have you read any of his books Travis? My sister in law read the one on the paranormal and said it was good. I've not read it yet. Someday!

message 347: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments No I have some books though. Stonesour is great I would have to list like 25 songs for you to try out

message 348: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Have not heard soulfly in like 15 years. I will compose te essential stone sour list sometime. Basically its all good. Also there was that one song I liked from the short span pf the sound city players featuring corey taylorbom vocal and dave grohl on drums and whoever guitared

message 349: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Also I felt the single psychosocial was a rebirth for slipknot then dead memories and snuff

message 350: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Sharon, your acting class sounds like it was a lot of fun - I could never do that in a million years!

And, there's #3. I'm very sad to hear about Alan Rickman - he was great as Snape, but I remember loving him as Sheriff of Nottingham, in the super-cheesy Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie from the 90's. He owned that roll, and I've liked him in everything since. I hadn't realized he was that old, either. I would have placed him in his 50's. Effing cancer.

Let's hope that 69 does not become the new 27 - because "The 69 Club", just doesn't sound right.
