Joan Lisa, I hope your mum is ok. My mother-in-law started getting unstoppable nosebleeds in her 70's and she's still going strong at 96. So good luck.

message 3403: by Joan (new)

Joan Sarah, kind of you to take him in. It is reassuring to know that if my dog scampered off people like you would help her. Do you have pets of your own?

Kristie | 19148 comments Sarah - Si sweet of you to take in that little pup and help him.

Lisa - I hope your mom is ok and it turns out to be something simple.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments My mum is back from A+E. She had to wait for nearly 3 hours until she got seen. Her blood pressure was slightly high but the doctor said that wasn't the cause. He thinks it was likely a weak vein and that it may need to be cauterised if the nose bleeds continue or get noticeably heavier. She has got to see how things go over the next few days and if they don't settle down, she has got to go to her GP and get referred to an ENT specialist who will decide if it needs cauterising or not. At least it wasn't anything serious :)

That's good, Lisa, I'm so glad to hear it!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I'm glad it wasn't anything serious, Lisa. My oldest son used to have heavy nose bleeding, specially in winter. We figured out what weakened his nose veins was the dry, hot air from the furnace. His pediatrician suggested to lubricate the interior of his nostrils with vaseline a couple of times a day. It really helped and the bleeding ended disappearing after a few days.

message 3410: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Glad to hear all ended up well for you mom, Lisa. :)

How cool to have a family buddy read, Travis.

Sarah | 18550 comments Dog and owner have been reunited. She was very well behaved wll evening and through the night. I posted in Facebook about the dog and another boater further along the canwl had spoken to someone who had lost their dog. We got in touch and it was indeed their dog. He just picked her up. So pleased for them. But miss her a little bit now. She was so well behaved.

Good to hear about your mum Lisa. I had nosebleeds a lot as a kid and ended up in a ane e a number of times reeulting with cauterisation which is basically a giant match being shoved up your nose. Boy does it make your eyes water. In the end i had to have it cuaterised whilst under anaesthetic where I'm guessing they just lasered all the veins up my nose. Never had a nosebleed after that. Touch wood.

That is funny Travis! I hope you manage to get some conversation about them. I really must start that series.

Sandra, the doctor in A+E gave my mum some cream to put inside her nose to see if it helps as he did wonder if cold air, central heating etc, might have been the cause.

Sarah, really happy to hear that your doggy guest has been reunited with her owner! :) Has having her stay the night got you in the mood for a dog of your own?... ;)

message 3418: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments lol Lisa. I am having a doggy comedown right now. It was lovely having her hear. She was so well behaved. We do want a dog. We nearly got one this time last year but the time wasn't right. It still isn't right now. Next year perhaps. I'm so relieved we found the owner and luckily she was also chipped so if we hadn't have been lucky to have found the owner through word of mouth, then at least the vet would have been able to get in touch. We were dreading that she wouldn't be chipped. Then we might have been in a dilemma.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Hehe, I remember you nearly adopting that dog last year, Sarah! It's definitely better to wait until the time is right because they are such a big commitment. Hopefully the time will be right soon :)

I'm glad she was chipped too! It makes things so much easier. Isn't it the law now to have your dog chipped? I'm sure I read that somewhere.

message 3422: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I get as many as 4-5 nose bleeds a day in the winter. Nit everyday but it comes and goes

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Travis of NNY wrote: "I get as many as 4-5 nose bleeds a day in the winter. Nit everyday but it comes and goes"

That must be a pain, Travis! Do they last a long time or do they stop quite quickly?

message 3424: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Usually I get them stopped in few minutes.

I should mention my brother in law who is flying through mistborn lives halfway up Pikes Peak at Barr Camp in the front ridge of the Rockies. He and his wife are caretakers. They don't get many hikers this time of year stopping by. But if anyone stops by Barr Camp be sure to tell Nate you're my reading buddies.

message 3425: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes you're right Lisa - it is law now to have a dog chipped. Not sure about cats though. However I bet there will be many people who still don't have them chipped. I know the vets will insist but if someone doesn't take their dog to the vet that regularly then that one will fall through the net. I think it only came in at the beginning of this year.

message 3426: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I don't think it is the law to have cats chipped. One of my cats is, we got him as a kitten from a rescue centre and they automatically chipped every animal that came through the doors. The other two aren't though. I think you are right, I bet there are loads of people who won't bother having their dogs chipped. It will be difficult to police so to speak.

Sarah | 18550 comments Kristie wrote: "Glad you found the doggy's family, Sarah. Interesting that it is law to get your dogs chipped there. It is such a good idea."

I think it's good too. A lot of dogs wander off and some unfortunately get stolen. We do have stray dogs I guess but I wouldn't say it's a big problem. We do have dog homes but I guess these are over run so perhaps that is what made them bring the law in.

message 3429: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I think the dog chipping law is a great idea too. Sadly, the number of incidents of dogs being stolen has risen dramatically in recent years, particularly with all the pedigree breeds you can get now, so I reckon that had something to do with the law being introduced.

I'd be so sad if my pup were stolen! Of course, she's a mutt, so I probably don't have much to worry about. She is chipped as well.

My cat on the other hand is an outdoor cat and visits everyone in the neighborhood. She follows the kids to the bus stop in the morning and they have given her a nickname (ninja cat). lol She also feels free to hop in people's cars and go in their houses. Everyone loves her. I'm worried one day she won't come home. We plan to get her chipped soon.

I would be so sad too if any of my cats got stolen. Ours have a cat flap so they can come and go as they please but luckily they are homebods so they choose to spend most of their time indoors. Also, none of them are pedigrees so we don't have to worry on that front either.

It's such a shame there are people out there who think it is okay to steal pets. Nothing is safe these days it seems, unless it is physically nailed down. No doubt they then try to sell them on for a huge price!

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments On a cheerier note, has anyone done any Christmas shopping yet? I have been quite organised this year, most of mine is already done :) Also, am I right in thinking it's Thanksgiving on Thursday in the US?

message 3435: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I plan to start my Christmas shopping this week, Lisa. I am the one doing it always the last minute. Not this year hopefully.

This Thursday is Thanksgiving, you are right.

message 3436: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments Yes! This Thursday is Thanksgiving. :) That is why I'll be out of town for a few days. I'm looking forward to celebrating with family. I have just started my Christmas shopping. I had to wait due to my move, but now I need to get going on it. I need to ship mine to a different state where we will be visiting before we go.

message 3437: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments On another cheerier note, I received a card, flowers and a bottle of wine from the owners of the dog we found. So sweet of them. They were clearly very relieved to have her back.

I bought my first thing online today Lisa. A gift for my grandmother. It's a metal sculpted dog with has a solar light in it wants funky silhouettes on the floor at night. I normally have a nightmare finding something for her. What do you buy a 96 year old? But my sister in law bought one for my mother in law last year and I think my nan will like it too. I know my nan won't be online so I don't need to worry about ruining the surprise. I've no idea what to get my parents though. Much thinking is required. I was hoping to see if I can find anything in Amsterdam at the weekend or failing that at the Bath Christmas market.

That was nice of the owners, Sarah. They are obviously very grateful for the care you gave her.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving!

I did most of my Christmas shopping online this year. It's so much nicer than having to go out in crowds of people.

What's Bath Christmas Market like, Sarah? I have often thought about going to the city for a couple of days and taking in the market at the same time. That Christmas present you got for your nan sounds really nice. I reckon she will like it.

message 3440: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments The Bath Christmas market is pretty spectacular. At least it was last year when I went. Much bigger than many Christmas markets and of course it's in a lovely setting around the roman baths, pump house and cathedral. It does get incredibly busy though with tourists coming from all over (especially Wales). Despite that, it has a really nice vibe and feels very festive.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments The annual book fair where you can buy new books for only 2-5 euros is this weekend (thursday to sunday). It's across the street from where I work but I don't think I can go this year :( I've never not been since I found out about its existence!

On a happier note, I just got word that a review paper I wrote on emotional eating is accepted for publication! What a drama it was to get that one published.. It's in an open access journal (freely available to everyone), so if anyone's interested I can post a link when it's online.

That's a shame you won't be able to go to the book fair, Peggy. Mind you, it might be just as well. At those prices I can imagine you would come home with quite a few! ;)

Congratulations on getting your review paper published! I would be interested in having a read of it when it goes online.
