Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Have you noticed how many times we talk about food and drink in this thread? LOL!

message 3002: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments I haven't heard of those before, Janice. I looked it up and they are in the US. More cookies. :) I think the US lumps a lot of things into the cookie category. Lol

Yes, in Uruguay we call it scones too.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments All this talk of biscuits is making me hungry!

Talking of biscuits, when I was little, I used to love a biscuit called Toffypops. They were my absolute favourite. However, I hadn't had one for about 15 years (I think they may even have stopped making them for a while) and then I suddenly spotted them in a supermarket last week. I decided to buy a pack just to see if they still tasted as good as I remembered. They did! They haven't changed at all. It was a real blast from the past :)

Sarah | 18550 comments Eek. Sat at the airport waiting to board. The day and night nurse did a number on my cold so I'm feeling a lot better. It should be a good trip.

Kristie | 19143 comments Thanks, Tasha. :)

Sandra - We have scones here too. Biscuits are different from scones, though similar.

message 3011: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Sure! Enjoy :)

message 3012: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I know, Kristie, but I think in the US biscuits are sweet and scones salty. Am I right? Scones As I knew them can be either.

message 3013: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Scones can be sweet too. Starbucks sells so many different sweet flavors of scones...yumm

message 3014: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Ah, ok. I will have to try to learn the difference. :)

Have a great time in Vienna, Sarah!

message 3016: by Joan (new)

Joan i have two british mothers-in-law. One pronounces the word scone with a long O, and the other says in with an ah sound sort of skahn. so no matter what I say, I'm wrong. :)
one makes sweet or what she calls savory scones which have salt and herbs.

message 3017: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I've never had a scone so I can't compare. They do look similar to what I call biscuits though.

I love these conversations too, it is so interesting to learn about all of our little similarities and differences.

Glad you are feeling better, Sarah! Enjoy your trip.

I'm doing something I very rarely do tonight. I'm having some of my friend's over to my house for food, wine, and movies! My husband's friends are at the house all of the time bc they are in the garage playing with the big boy toys (race cars), but I rarely if ever have my friends over. I'm quite looking forward to it. It really is the little things in life that are most special!

Enjoy! They say women can profit best from coming together with other women; it has to do with the oxytocin our brains release in such situations

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments The Farmer's Almanac is predicting a harsh winter for us in Canada with lots of snow. Normally, we don't get snow until the end of October. We get a skiff, enough to make it nasty for the wee ones on Halloween, and then it melts and we don't get much more until later in November.

It snowed all last weekend while we were in Jasper. But, hey, it's the mountains and you get snow earlier in the higher elevations. I came home and washed my car on Wednesday. It started snowing on Thursday. It stopped yesterday, but it's coming down with a vengeance today.

I think it's time to move into my sister's spare bedroom in Hawaii.

We had another "practice for Mexico" last night at my place. We had white wine mojitos. Let me just say that it's going to be a wild time in Mexico. I hope I don't get a phone call tomorrow from the landlord reprimanding me for the noise. Hehehehe!

message 3025: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Janice, you are so funny! Prepping for Mexico sounds almost as fun as going to Mexico!

message 3026: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I'm not exactly sure what we're practicing. I think it's possible we're practicing how to handle the hangovers. LOL!

message 3027: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I was going to ask what you were practicing. LOL. It sounds like fun and I imagine your trip will be unforgettable... unless you drink too much and can't remember the good times, in which case you'll still know it had to have been grand!

Friday night was a good time. We ended up not watching movies, but played a couple games instead. Then Saturday I went to Memphis with a couple of friends for some shopping and to go to a haunted house. It was a fun time. The haunted house was pretty good, but I've been to better ones. We ran through it a little too fast for my tastes, but its all good. One of the girls with us is terrified of clowns and of course there was a couple of clowns there. She let out a blood curdling scream both times she saw them. It was hilarious!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Sandra wrote: "How do you prepare the overnight oats, Sarah? Do you use a slow cooker of something? We are not used to eat oats for breakfast, but I have been wanting to introduce them for a while."

I cook steel cut oats in the slow cooker overnight quite often, Sandra. I put apples and raisins in too. It smells so amazing. It makes the whole house smell warm and cozy. If your slow cooker cooks hot enough on low or warm, it is better and does not burn. Mine cooks too hot on the normal Low setting and I have burned them in the past. I have not cooked regular oatmeal in the slow cooker, just the steel cut oats. They are made to be cooked slower and longer than the regular oats. Do not use Quick Oats.

I must be an exception to the oat texture dislike. I love oatmeal - no matter HOW it is cooked or not cooked.

I was served cooked breakfast every day last week while I was staying at my sister's house. She likes to cook breakfast and was thrilled to have someone to cook for and eat it with. We had eggs and bacon most days but she made raspberry waffles one day and fried spam and raisin bread toast with her home made blackberry jam and hash browns on Sunday morning before I left.

I started a diet today.

message 3038: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I have made oats that way too, but not exactly. It is actually mostly apples, with some oats, sugar and cinnamon. It really smells great!

Good luck with you diet. :) I'm visiting my family in Uruguay at the end of the month (my grandmother turns 90) and I know how this will go...

message 3039: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Mmmm your sister's breakfast sounds amazing Cherie!

I'll be having elaborate breakfasts soon too (although I'll probably stick to the bread), we're going to Budapest for a few days on Saturday. Anyone ever been?

message 3040: by Tasha (new)

Tasha How long will you be in Uruguay, Sandra? It's wonderful that you are going to see your grandmother as she turns 90! Is is just you or the whole family?

Have fun in Budapest, Peggy! I've never been there.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments 10 days, Tasha. Actually 8, because I need one day to go and one to come back. :) It's just me, so it will also be kinda so-much-need vacations! My sister in law was planing to visit us in January, but she changed her plan to come while I'm gone, so she can give a hand to my husband. He is able to do many things at home, like cook, laundry, etc., buy it is always with me as the CEO. I'm not sure he understand how much planning, energy and time takes running this house. But they will survive. :) And I will miss the kids, a lot, I'm sure, but I really need a break. Last time I had a break was in 2012. Since then I've been 24/7/365 taking care of them. So I'm really looking forward to it.
