Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Joan, that's great about your singing lessons. Good luck!

Flight triggers my husband's vertigo. It is not always, and is not really bad, but it happens.

message 2704: by Tasha (last edited Sep 09, 2016 06:22AM) (new)

Tasha Joan, I LOVE your sense of adventure and daring! How fun! enjoy :)

Kristie, geez, you certainly have a lot of commotion going on around you with your trip. Sounds like never a dull moment! I'm glad to hear that the migraine only lasted a day though. Did you drink enough water? I know it's simple but when I feel an occular migraine coming on I make sure to drink lots of water and it really helps!

I would recommend looking into a homeopathic remedy that might help while you have the migraine: Bryonia

message 2705: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Sep 09, 2016 06:35AM) (new)

Kristie | 19147 comments Tasha - It's definitely been a bit of a crazy trip!

I've been trying to drink more water lately. It's been a struggle for me in the past, but I've been doing quite well with it lately. It is possible that I drink less when traveling though. I've tried drinking extra water once I get a migraine or feel one coming on, but it doesn't seem to help. Maybe it's just too late at that point?

Thanks for the Bryonia recommendation. I have not heard of that one before. I will certainly look into it.

Kristie | 19147 comments We went to see Newgrange Monument today and got caught in the rain, then saw the best rainbow ever! It was incredibly bright and a full double rainbow. Everyone was stopping to take pictures of it. I probably took as many pics of the rainbow as I did of the monument.

message 2708: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks TJ and Sandra!
I feel so much better after taking those hayfever meds from the doctors. What a relief.

Just to chime in on the migraine / flying discussion. I'm the same. I have put it down to the pressure and tiredness. It also triggers vertigo. I only get this on long haul flights though, I'm fine on a 2/3 hour flight.

I am going on a brewery tour at the Wadsworth brewery with my dad tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it. I bought it as a present for him back when it was father's day. He's then going to help us go down the Caen Hill lock flight in the afternoon. Fingers crossed the weather is ok (for the afternoon) otherwise it will not be a pleasant experience. And a certain someone took the old chimney off, threw it away, and then couldn't fix the new one to the roof properly. Ahem! It's made of stainless steel and is a nightmare to drill to attach the little hat to the top and the chimney to the flue. My partner has broken countless drill bits trying to do it - no wonder I couldn't do it. But back to the reason I mentioned this, if we get wet, we get cold, we want a fire, but we can't have a fire because we have not fixed chimney, so we'll be cold. Please be sunny!!!

You made me laugh Kristie about the rainbow pictures. I'd have done the same. We had one a few months back which was the brightest rainbow I've ever seen. They are so beautiful.

message 2709: by Joan (new)

Joan Janice, love that quote. I'm making a plaque for myself with it.

Sarah, your travails remind me of an old t.v. skit "Twas on a Monday Morning", its basically about how one repair around the house leads to another. It's Monty Python humor.

message 2710: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Or "sing like you're in the shower"

Oh yeah Stainless is a bear. Just keep buying bits til you get it. All you can do. Also drill as slow as possible like with any metal. Youre still gonna vreak bits like a son of a gun though

message 2711: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'll check it out Joan. I like Money Python so it should appeal to me.

Yes we've been doing it slowly Travis. I think we hardened the metal at first which was then a nightmare to get through. We've got one hole done. 3 more to do. We've decided to bolt it rather than use screws so now we can use a bigger drill bit which should make it easier. and hopefully less drill bits will be required.

Thank you for this. I now have 2 more authors I want to read

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thanks for the list, Sandra. There are a couple of names of authors that I have not read and may check out, but also other names that are missing. I expected to see Anne McCaffrey and D.C. Fontanna, at least. And maybe Donita K. Paul. What about Barbara Kingsolver?

message 2722: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh, you are right Joan. I wrote Barbara Kingsolver (who writes historical fiction and fiction) but I meant Margaret Atwood. Sorry about that.

message 2723: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks for the article Sandra. I was surprised they didn't mention Ann Leckie who has written a pretty good science fiction series. I know she's only written one series whilst the others mentioned in the article have a wider number of books available it would seem.

The brewery tour at the weekend was great fun. We got samples. We tried each beer (6 in total). So I basically had just short of 2 pints of beer in probably the space of 20 minutes. So I felt pretty merry when I left. That was my breakfast! I didn't really think it through as then I had to do the Caen Hill lock flight afterwards and I could not stop yawning. I ended up driving the boat (after I'd soaked the beer up with sandwiches) instead of doing the locks. At least it was dry for the locks! We made a little more progress with our shower too. It's definitely taking shape. I might even be able to have a shower for my birthday! Fingers crossed.

message 2724: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Sarah, how's the shower project? And it seems I may have missed wishing you a happy birthday - ? So if so, happy birthday!! Glad your hay fever is much better.

I've got a couple of "at home" projects going currently. One is thinning down possessions - giving away, selling, tossing out. Making some progress but still lots more to do. My other project is making Halloween costumes for my 4 nephews. The 19 month old triplet boys will be "the 3 little pigs" and their 8-year-old brother will be "the big bad wolf." A challenge for me given my sewing ability is generally limited to reattaching buttons and mending a hem occasionally.

Lisa, meant to tell you that your Scotland trip sounded wonderful. I went to Scotland and England years ago (1983) with my grandmother. Such a treasured memory. Would love to go again but not sure it's in the cards.

Joan, have you started your voice lessons yet? I took a few voice lessons a long time ago. Didn't turn me into Adele, but did improve my singing ability and enjoyment. Worked on singing from the diaphragm - correct posture, breathing, tonality, etc. Practiced daily vocal exercises. I was surprised and pleased with progress. Good luck and hope you have fun with this!

message 2725: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments The shower project is coming along nice TJ. I reckon we'll have the plastic lining in by the end ofthe weekend and then that just leaves installing the shower unit. You haven't missed my birthday - its 23 October. I think i commented that i might get to have a shower for my birthday. I think i might just get one before then though. Hopefully.

I've been sewing these last couple days too. We're going to a wedding tomorrow which has a theme of pirates and princesses. We're not going full on fancy dress, just added some adornments to existing clothes. I have also been cooking all afternoon as all the guests have to take food to share. I've really enjoyed making our dishes to take along.

Beetroot, butternut squash and feta quiche, mixed beans and rice, and an olive and caper tapenade.

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Enjoy the wedding and festivities, Sarah. Your menu offerings sound yummy and right up my alley. Except any more I'm substituting goat cheese for beloved feta because it's much lower in sodium. Following a low sodium diet is making a big difference for my blood pressure. Means shopping and cooking very carefully. Totally worth it tho. My husband is still adjusting to my not being able to eat out whenever/wherever. However, restaurant and packaged foods tend to be loaded with salt. Often sugar as well. I've lost 12 pounds since mid-June being on this low sodium diet without any other special effort!

I wonder if they are spoilerish? I only read Murder on the Orient Express and don't think the stamp gives anything away. I really like the stamps and the idea. Great way of honoring Agata Christie.

Thanks, Lisa. My real goal is lowering my blood pressure. Losing a bit of weight just happened secondarily to changes in my diet to lower sodium intake. I've been really surprised by the weight loss, but really happy my bp is improving. I really want to avoid meds if I can.

Hoping some day to make it back to Scotland - on my big trip around the world - LOL - but maybe : )

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Sandra, thanks for posting about the new Agatha Christi stamps.

The article says, "concealed clues can be revealed using either a magnifying glass, UV light, or body heat." What fun! Would love to see what some of these clues are, at least for the books I've already read. I'm envious!

I had an amazing time at the handfasting yesterday. I am very hungover today. Much wine, beer and mead was consumed. We have been out for dinner this evening as i couldn't face cooking. It's been a good weekend. I love the boating community. What a fab group of people.

Joan Sarah happy belated, your boating group sounds like a great community, but perhaps like attracts like?
that quiche sounds delicious - have you posted the recipe?
Tejas Janet congratulations on the successful diet change, I know home cooked is healthier but I find junk food hard to resist. you're an inspiration.
the singing is off to a, rocky start, I'm an alto so apparently I don't get to sing the melody - I supposed to harmonize, very confusing.

I'm an alto as well and have sung in choirs, trios, duets since a teen. I sing harmony all the time. My ex found it disconcerting because I'd sing the alto line to a song on the radio.

It may take a while, Joan, but you'll adjust quickly.
