Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Hi everyone! I'm back from the Scottish Highlands. Had an amazing time, the scenery and wildlife was breathtaking and the weather was very kind to us. It was also very peaceful up there as there was not much traffic around, at least in comparison to where I live in England anyway. I didn't find Jamie Fraser but never mind, there is always another time ;) I will try and share some photos with you all at some point.

I hope all the Americans here had a good Labor Day weekend!

Sarah | 18550 comments Good to see you back Lisa and to hear that you had a great time in Scotland. I still haven't managed to make it up to Scotland yet. Nor Ireland (thinking of Kristie there at the moment). I've been to Wales lots, and obviously I live in England. I always think we miss more of what is on our doorsteps. I would love to travel around the UK to check out places.

message 2654: by Lisa (last edited Sep 06, 2016 03:50AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I agree, Sarah. I think we do overlook a lot of what is on our doorsteps. I haven't been to Ireland either and the only place I have been to in Wales is Cardiff and that was only for a day to look at the university. There is so much of England I haven't seen either.

Sarah | 18550 comments I went to visit a friend in Poland a few years back and I made a comment about us (in the UK) not having any funky buildings like they had there. He reminded me we had castles! When I came back to Bristol, I started noticing all the amazing buildings around and fell in love with the city even more. We walk around like we're residents (like we are) rather than tourists. The shift in perspective can be very useful.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Good to hear you had such a great time Lisa!

And I know what you mean. The Netherlands is such a small country and I haven't even been to all 12 provinces! And all these things that tourists do when they're in the area, I have never done.

Being a history lover, I have always taken an interest in our British castles and other historical buildings but it's our countryside that I feel I overlook/underappreciate. I always look at pictures of other countries and think they look beautiful (and they are) but our countryside is just as nice when you step back and really look at it.

message 2659: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm glad you had such a nice time, Lisa! We have history here in the states and I love going to historical places and also just looking around at the old things but those of you outside the States have SO much more history to see and visit. At least that's how I feel. :)

Ooh, exciting. You'll be fine. What's it for/about?

message 2665: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments It was on emotional eating. He emailed me last week about wanting to write a piece on emotional eating for the health-section of the regional newspaper, and he found me on the internet. I thought it would be by phone, but he said 'okay, I'll be there Wednesday at 10.30 and I'll bring a photographer.' But he was a really nice guy with good questions and it was fun :) I do have a sore jaw now from fake-smiling for 10 minutes for the pictures ;-)

message 2667: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Good to hear it went well Peggy. It can be nerve wracking but lots of fun too. Never done an article but I've been invited on to the BBC local radio station to talk about hypnotherapy twice now. I was understandably a bit nervous but after I was on such a high. You'll have to let us know what the article is like (send us a link).

message 2668: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yikes, for a radio (or tv! eek!) interview I would be even more nervous. At least for the news paper it doesn't matter if I stammer or ramble on, they can just ignore that ;-)

I'll try to post it here, but keep in mind that it is in Dutch so you might only be able to look at the pictures ;-)

I'm glad it went well, Peggy.

message 2674: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments LOL Sandra, I don't think it will go that far ;-)

@Sarah: I think those things like saying umm or having short silences always seem much worse to the person doing the talking than to the audience :) Can we listen the interviews back somewhere?

message 2676: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments @Peggy - I'll dig out a link for you. I only have one of them though. It was available online but it expired after a while. I recorded one which i made in to a you tube video. It was about seasonal affective disorder and hypnotherapy generally. It was quite soon after i qualified. I may word things differently now. The other one i did was about spider phobias but i was just one of many guests talking about spiders generally so i didn't speak much unlike the other one.

message 2679: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I live in the Chicago area. In the city we have amazing sky scrapers. But we have very few buildings with history. The fire took out many and progress took out many more. I think that might be why I am so fascinated with castles and building over 100 years old. It took a friend who is an architect to help me appreciate what we have here. I still long for castles but I now do see some beauty here.

Me, too, I mean three ; ) Btw,

Your I Can Make You Sleep recommendation has drastically changed the quantity and quality of sleep i routinely get. Now, I'm considering hynotherapy techniques that might help me conquer "white coat" hypertension. Getting regular good sleep plus better diet and more exercise have brought my blood pressure under control. Except the second i step in a doctor's office, it sky rockets.

message 2682: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That's good to hear TJ. Interesting you should mention blood pressure. Definitely check out the research on that and Hypnotherapy. Very interesting reading. I recently went to the doctors for a cough I've had for months. it's just very bad hay fever and fluid behind the eardrum. But they took my BP and it was high. Normally I am very low. it could be the cough or being under the weather a bit but she also mentioned white coat syndrome. I have to go back to get it checked once hayfever season/cough has gone. Mad what our brain can do. Which is why hypnotherapy can be helpful in this area.

I'll sort a link tomorrow.

Kristie | 19147 comments Our vacation has not been going as planned. It started out with us not being able to get into our hotel room and having to wait around for hours (one wasted day), then another day wasted when when I had a migraine, and another with a stomach bug. Now we have had a flat tire and we've spent 4 hours waiting to get it temporarily repaired. They will need to complete the repairs in the morning (it is 12:30am here). We are just heading back to our hotel...so sleepy! Hoping to squeeze in quite a bit over the next couple of days. (I had to use someone else's wifi just to post this!) It can only get better!!

Joan Renee, you have some absolutely BEAUTIFUL art deco lobbies in Chicago. Quite a few let the public in to look at them.
I traipsed through a bunch near the lake, south of the stadium and a little north of The University of Chicago.

message 2690: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19147 comments Thanks, ladies. It hasn't been all bad, just a string of incidents. On a more positive note - the migraine only lasted one day. Typically, they last 3-5. The stomach bug was just a 24-hour one as well. The owner of the restaurant we were at stayed late so we could wait for the repairman inside, then showed us a better way to get back to the hotel. Great guy! Our car is repaired and though we didn't get to bed until 3am, we were able to sleep in a bit. Things are looking up! We've seen a few great sites and have a very fully planned two days left!

That reminds me of a coworker who would always get a migraine on the second day of a holiday. She theorized that it was a result of the release of tension in her neck and shoulders. When holding muscles so tense and tight for weeks on end, there's bound to be pain once released. I don't know if that was the cause of it, but it worked as an explanation for her.

I always seem to get them when I travel by airplane. I'm not sure what causes it.

Thanks, Lisa and Sarah. Things are looking better.

Today started out with a minor hassle, but turned out to be a good day overall. We went to another book shop, then to see the Rock of Cashel and took a pretty drive through the mountains. We also went back to a restaurant that we really enjoyed with great food and a complimentary Baileys. :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Kristie wrote: "I always seem to get them when I travel by airplane. I'm not sure what causes it. "

Could be a change in pressure. Glad your day turned out to be good. Did you buy any books?

message 2698: by Joan (new)

Joan I find the bulge in airplane seats forces my head forward at funny angle; maybe it affects you too and the hat triggers the migraine? Wearing one of those foam neck braces on the plane helps me.

I am trying in something totally wacky! I've always wanted to sing but 45 years ago a music teacher told me I couldn't. Well, I've found a gentle teacher willing to try to teach me. I'm excited!

Good show, Sarah. You were articulate and relatable. Is your hay fever getting any better? "Just allergies" can really kick some butt sometimes! And having fluid behind an eardrum can be quite painful, especially if it leads to infection which can happen pretty readily. Hope that's better, too.

Kristie, I think sensitivity to cabin pressure changes or to altitude changes could be the culprit for triggering your air travel migraines. Not sure what can help counter these tho. Must be something that can help. Seems like you have a positive attitude, which is a big plus. Hope the rest of your trip is fun and relaxing.

message 2700: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19147 comments I'm not sure what causes the migraines. It could be the change in pressure. That's a great suggestion, though not sure what I can do about that. I thought it was the neck angle and compression of muscles, so I bought a foam neck pillow. :) This was a long flight, so probably not the best to try out for the first time. Plus there were some issues on the flight, which I'm sure added to my triggers. (There was a man that was inappropriately touching a woman on our overnight flight, so the lights came on and there was lots of commotion, etc.) So, I ended up being awake for over 24 hours. I'm sure the lack of sleep didn't help.

Janice - I've been to two bookstores, but only bought one book, City of Women. both bookstores were small and did not have a large selection. I only want to buy books that I'll definitely want to read, since I have to transport them home.

Joan - Good luck with your singing lessons. I think it's great that you are doing something that you are interested in. I think having fun with an activity is much more important than a person's level of innate talent. Sad that your old instructor turned you away from it .

Thanks, Tejas Janet. I try to keep a positive attitude. If I focused on the negatives, I'd be unhappy all the time.
