That's a very polite way of putting it Sarah :)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments It was (or is actually, quite extensively) on the news here too Sarah. So sad and shocking. I read some background about her in one of the news articles and she seemed a really great person, very concerned about human rights. I love that a politician lives on a boat! It makes them so 'human', it's like our prime minister who cycles to his office every day.

We had a politician murdered (shot when he left a radio studio in the middle of the day) here too, but only once as far as I can remember, and 12 years ago. I remember how shocked every one was. That guy had views that were completely opposite from mine, but the fact that people get murdered for having an opinion is scary and I can't get my head around it. And Jo Cox did not even have extreme viewpoints (as far as I understood), it's like it could have been almost any politician.

I think for that reason one of the right wing Dutch politicians (Geert Wilders, who makes a lot of super stupid and narrow-minded comments, a bit like Trump I guess) has not been outside without severe protection and body guards for the last 10 years or so. Has security been increased for British politicians now?

I think they are reviewing security for British politicians in the wake of what happened, Peggy.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I read about Jo Cox yesterday. It's really scary the levels of intolerance we are living with.

I know. I was trying to be diplomatic. I don't class them as a political party. My actual view? (view spoiler)

The campaigns for the EU referendum have been suspended although i guess the actual referendum will still go ahead next week.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Sandra, those bus benches are so cool!

message 2057: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Totally agree with your spoiler, Sarah.

message 2058: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments It was on the news here about Jo Cox as well. For a person to be killed like that because of intolerance and hatred is such a shame. It follows on the wake of the Orlando massacre, and the death of a young singer also in Orlando.

message 2059: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Now that spoiler is much more like it, lol
This and many other things that are happening recently are scaring the hell out of me

Sarah | 18550 comments Lol Lynn. Yes I'm concerned with the EU referendum and what it means for us. Among other things.

message 2061: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments The murder of Jo Cox is a terrible loss and tragic sign of our times. And frightening. Violence and extremism abound.

Thank goodness for books and art - and art about books, like the benches in your area, Sandra.

message 2062: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I somehow missed the benches. love them! Wallace and Gromit is made in Bristol and a few years back they placed a number of giant Wallaces, all painted different by artists and you had to find them all. We have also had Shawn the Sheep ones and gorillas which was in conjunction with the new gorilla enclosure at the city zoo. All beautifully decorated like those benches. :-)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I have a mystery to solve. In the wee hours of the morning, I crawled out of bed and stepped on something. I flashed the light from my cell phone and there were these little dark lumps all over the rug. I turned on the main light to see what they were. Cat chow! It looked like someone took a handful of cat chow and threw it onto the floor. They weren't there when I went to bed. The cat's food dish and bag of cat chow is in the bathroom on the other side of the apartment. This morning, I went to make the bed and there was more on the carpet on the other side of the bed, and one on the top of the bed.

I'm at a loss as to how it got there. I've never seen that before. Cleo doesn't carry food around in her mouth.

message 2064: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's weird! Did you put some in your pocket and it fell out without you noticing?

message 2065: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments No, I wouldn't put cat chow in my pockets. It is really bizarre.

message 2066: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That is really bizarre Janice. No sign of any other animals that might have got in to your apartment? Do they appear anywhere else? Did you sleepwalk and help yourself to a midnight snack of cat chow?! ;-)

message 2067: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments If it were my home, I would blame the kids. But I don't have a theory for your apartment, Janice...

message 2068: by Joan (new)

Joan Janice..not trying to freak you out but we had a mouse that stole cat food and stashed it around in couches, in shoes etc. Our large, lazy housecat wasn't bothered in the least!

message 2069: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Over 200 posts in this thread alone to catch up on. I've been away from GR way too long! Attacking ovens, finished offices, haircuts, tinnitus, book-benches, car trips, visiting grandkids, mosquitoes being called mossies, lost files, kefir & 'kraut, sleepovers, and randomly appearing cat chow.... oh my! LOL.

My husband and I left on May 20th headed Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to vacation and celebrate our 10 year anniversary. We came home for 2 days, then went off for a weekend camping/canoeing trip. Between getting ready for vacation and now, work and everything has been so hectic, I have only logged on to GR long enough to add a book or two (or dozen, who's counting?) to my TBR. I've enjoyed reading through all that I've missed... hopefully I'll have time in the near future to catch up on the other threads as well. Its good to see what all of my YLTO peeps have been up to!

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Hi KimeyDiann. Sounds like busy times, but lots of fun times, too.

How on earth did the cat food get moved?? I'm at a loss. Trying to come up with a theory.

message 2073: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I think I've solved the mystery, and I'm embarrassed to post it.

I was folding clothes this afternoon, and discovered my nightgown was inside out. So I laid it out on the foot of the bed to fold it. When I lifted it up, a clump of chow was displaced. I think that Cleo must have thrown up on the end of the bed and I never noticed because my quilt is dark and multi-coloured. It must have dried so that when I pulled the quilt aside last night, they scattered off the bed.

I had considered that option, but was thrown off by the dry, separated pieces of cat chow instead of a clump. GROSS! But, it's proof she doesn't chew her food.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Peggy - go for it. If it's anything like Aus with lecturer positions, they are few and far between so when there is an opportunity, just go for it!

Sandra - love those benches!

Re: Jo Cox - we were in the Dentist surgery yesterday morning and I stopped mid-sentence to Lexx when I heard half the news story. Grabbed my phone hoping I had misheard. Could not believe it. When in work, the Dean across the corridor from me grew up in Bradford and my family is in Bradford and Leeds, and we just were saying "But this doesn't happen!!" So sad.

All of it, Orlando, Jo Cox, the Brexit debate, it's all been fuelled by fear and hatred. And I can't stand it. Just look at all the anti-LGBTI rhetoric and discrimiatory laws that's being thrown around. Look at all the anti-immigration, anti-Muslim, anti-foreigner, anti-refugee diatribes and misinformation being published and spoken about everywhere. It's no wonder these things have happened when public figures stir this all up to get what they want. Don't act surprised when people act in hateful, evil ways to "protect" themselves when you tell them all the time you're at war with these groups in order to save your way of living. It's just bullshit.

We're just as bad over here. Our immigration minister said the other day that refugees will take all the Australian jobs and stand in our Social Services queues for unemployment benefits. In the same sentence. How can you be unemployed while taking our jobs? It's an oxymoron! But the guy's just a plain moron in general, BUT PEOPLE BELIEVE HIM. We have 2 more weeks of an election campaign, I'm worried what all of this will stir up over here during those weeks.

Brexit - I am super super worried about what will happen if Britain leaves. I cannot see anything good coming out of it. And I cannot vote even though I've been a citizen for 14 years. But my friend who's wedding we went to in Trinidad can, as she's lived in London for 6 months. Bah.

Janice - And after all that, thanks for a good laugh. Mmm cat vomit.

message 2077: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Mystery solved, haa haa!! Something along these lines had crossed my mind, Janice, but then i said, nah, cuz the food was so dry and intact. I'm gratified to learn that this was the answer after all since it seemed to be the only explanation that made sense.

message 2078: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Rats or mouse? (they have to be very bold, though...)

message 2080: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments We don't have rats in Alberta, and there are no signs of mice in my apartment. The mystery was solved and there were no creepy crawlies.

When I lived out on the farm, we had mice in abundance. I had the piano tuner come out and was very embarrassed when he found a stash of dog chow in the bottom of the piano, along with mouse droppings.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I thought everywhere on earth had rats?!

message 2082: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I thought exactly the same thing, Rusalka!

message 2083: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Not in Alberta. Back in the 50's, the provincial government put a program in place to eradicate and control the infestation of rats into the province. It's still ongoing. There have been rats spotted from time to time, but every effort is made to keep the province rat-free.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Wow. That's amazing. I wonder if they could do something like that here without killing our native little mammals. No doubt its already been thrown in the too hard basket

message 2085: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I could imagine they'd be hard to get rid of once they took hold. They breed so prolifically.

message 2086: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Saw some awesome poultry at a vintage steam rally today. You have to get a white silkie Rusalka - they are so cute and fluffy! I also liked the pekin with their little tufty feet. There were some babies too. There was another with blackish feathers with some green and white speckled but i can't remember member the name of that one. I spent ages staring at them. I want a chicken!

message 2089: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Chickens are pretty amazing. We would love silkies but they don't lay very often, and they are very docile. Our girls are a very feisty breed and would rip little silkies to bits. We have said if we have to replace our flock from scratch we would get a couple.

Pekins feet are cute but they would get so dirty. Our girls are Australorps that have an iridescent green sheen over their black feathers. Were they like that?

We're talking about getting a Polish or two

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Also Sarah, here's a chicken on a boat. http://failblog.cheezburger.com/wins/...

P.S. I am very worried for this chicken's safety. But she seems to be having fun and is a clever way for the boatman to get food. I can't see her doing well with waves however.

My wife adopted the last 3 which areb't big enpugh tp lay yet. We had to lock them in the egg laying part of the coop with chicken wire for a few days so ours wouldn't kill them. They didn't like strays on their turf for a few daya but all seem to get along alright. The three stick together and do their own thing but ours aren't trying to kill them anynore
