Kristie | 19147 comments My reading may be curtailed a bit this summer... I just found out that my grandson will be coming to stay with us for about 7 weeks during his summer break! So excited! :D We've been trying to work out logistics forever and finally worked everything out. I can't wait to see him. I am picking him up June 19th-20th.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Your new hairstyle sounds great, Sarah. It will be nice and cool for summer.

How old is your grandson, Kristie? Enjoy his stay with you.

Kristie | 19147 comments He is six, Janice. :) He will turn 7 this summer.

We will have him from mid-June to mid-July (3.5 weeks). Then, we are bringing him home for about a week the middle of July for his birthday and we will visit family and friends while there. Then, he will be with us for another 3.5 weeks until mid-August.

It will be a lot of fun. We used to spend a lot of time with him when we lived closer, but don't get to see him very often now. I am looking up fun summer activities and day trips in our area. Thank you. :)

Sarah | 18550 comments I had a random ylto dream last night. my partner and I turned up at Rusalka's house when she wasn't expecting us. When we got there, we didn't know which door to knock on as there were 3. one was open so we let ourselves in. my partner started making some food. in the meantime I went to knock on another door and found Rusalka and Lexx. Who were very surprised. We went in to the garden where there was food served and I remembered my partner was sorting food so I went to find him. he'd made a total mess. pulled some wiring out under the sink, all our clothes were unpacked and covered in ants. I got bitten. Then the world and his wife turned up and it was chaotic. everyone's skin was bright orange. I wandered off on my own to find a chemist and got a bit lost. the chemist wouldn't sell me any ibuprofen but I managed to get the antihistamines. Then I woke up. Turns out I had actually been bitten in the night, mosquito not ants and my hayfever is bad. Random.

message 2010: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Lol, that is a pretty random dream, Sarah. Interesting that you dreamt that you were bitten by ants but had actually been bitten by mosquitos. That part of the dream was obviously tying in to the fact you were being bitten in real life. I hope they didn't bite you too badly?

message 2011: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments lol, Sarah! I often include in dreams pains and physical discomfort I'm feeling while sleeping.

message 2012: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments That was quite the vivid dream, Sarah. LOL!

message 2013: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I love dreams like that, and very honoured to be featured!!
I've also had biting dreams that I've woken up to being eaten alive by mossies. I just get annoyed, as if it was bad enough to come into my dream, why didn't my body wake me up?!

message 2014: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments It's amazing how much damage just one mosquito can do. I saw the culprit earlier in the evening but i thought it was a non biting variety as we get more of those here. So i just left it be. Wish I'd killed it now. A few bites on my knee but they've swelled up a bit. I'm gutted we have biting mossies here now. The warmer, more humid summers have meant better breeding grounds for them. I thought i was safe but no.

message 2015: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19147 comments What a dream, Sarah! Lol. Sorry you have those nasty little mosquitos now.

I went hang gliding yesterday and had a lot of fun. :) Today is now cleaning day...blah.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments My office is all back together now. One of my clients (who is a carpenter) dropped paperwork off on Thursday. When he saw boxes of stuff still in the living room, he asked, "Hasn't your son set up your desk for you yet?... I'll be over tomorrow." He came and in a couple of hours we had everything set up, plus he hauled away my old pieces (printer table, lateral file cabinet, and hutch).

I just have a couple of piles of paperwork that needs to be sorted and a home found for it.

Since the boxes of uninstalled desk furniture are finally out of my living room, I gave everything a good dusting and vacuum. I feel like I can breathe again - literally and figuratively. I keep looking at the empty space in my living room and feeling all warm and fuzzy. That was a long haul!

message 2017: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yay! What a kind client. I'm pleased you have it all sorted. Have you leaped and danced about yet in all that free space? ;-)

I've been up and down, laying on the floor under my desk hooking up the computer and stringing cords so many times that I'm a bit stiff and sore. LOL! I have another bag of garbage to haul out to the dumpster, but it's going to wait until tomorrow.

But, I keep walking over to my office to look in. It's a good feeling.

I'm sure it is!
BTW, how is your creative course going?

message 2022: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I was busy last week prepping for my daughter's annual big birthday sleepover which happened this weekend. We had 17 girls stay over! Ages 8-12. I got little sleep but my daughter had a blast and that makes up for all the time, energy and sleeplessness that goes into this bash. The day after we all just lay around and rest!

Funny dream, Sarah!

I'm so glad things are back to normal for you now, Janice! I know that must feel wonderful!

message 2023: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19147 comments I remember those days, Tasha! Must have been a lot of fun for her. That was a lot of girls! I think we used to limit ours to 10 or something like that.

message 2024: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19147 comments Janice, that sounds like a lot of work, but you must be glad that it's almost done. It will be such a relief once it is completely finished.

I would love to limit it but she is such a little social butterfly it's hard. She did want to include 2 girls the week before but I drew the line then bc these were girls she knows but not real well so it was easier to say no. :)

Actually, I'm stretched out on the love seat, with coffee in my hand, and my laptop on my lap. Soon, I'll head into my nice clean office. It will be so nice to tie into work with everything so organized. I don't work well in a mess.

Oh, it's finished. It was just a 6 week course. I'd like to take a more in-depth course. I didn't get much out of that one but a taste.

All that's left is a couple of piles to organize, a tub of shredding to go to the recyclers, and some old computers/laptop to go to recycle once the hard drives are scrubbed.

Then, I want to tackle my bedroom. It's shocking how much stuff one can accumulate in 4 years.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm happy for you Janice!

Pfew Tasha, that sounds tiring but fun. I remember birthday sleepovers when I was younger, but it was never with 17!

There are three vacancies at my department for assistant professors. I'm debating whether to apply for it or not.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments That sounds like a great opportunity, Peggy.

message 2035: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Professor Peggy. I like the sound of that! Good luck if you decide to go for it.

message 2036: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Haha, it sounds more fancy than it is ;-) I think it's comparable to tenure in the UK but this is not a permanent position, only for 3 years.

I'm not even sure if I could even get the job even if they wanted me. There's this law in the Netherlands that you can only have 3 temporary contracts in a row while working for the same company. After that, you need a 6-month period in which you don't work for that compant. It was designed to protect employees, so that the chances of a permanent job are higher because employers can't just keep them on temporary contracts indefinitely. But, in the academic world where short temporary contracts are kind of the rule, it ruins your chances of staying at the same university. And I think I had my 3 already.

message 2037: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oops, I meant lecturer. I don't even know what tenure means exactly.

message 2038: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19147 comments That's great, Janice! Almost there. Just tidbits left. And yes...we certainly do collect. :)

Peggy, are there any loopholes to being able to take more than 3 temporary positions in a row? For example, maybe you can fill out a legal form or something to request an allowance for an additional contract, that sort of thing?? Or is it a hard and fast law with no allowances? Good luck, if you decide to go for it.

Good luck with you decision, Peggy. :)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Peggy wrote: "Oops, I meant lecturer. I don't even know what tenure means exactly."

I think in the US that tenure means you have received an appointed position as professor after some trial period. Once tenure is earned, it means very good job security. You can't be let go without the university making a case against you for some "just cause." Assistant professorships are usually the way forward to full professorships i think so you should probably go for it!

I can never hear the words "white wash" without thinking of Twain's story about the boys painting Aunt Polly's fence.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments We are having an interesting project in our area, The Book Benches of Center County, consisting in 25 benches in the shape of an open book and totally painted by different artists, and placed in different locations in Center County (PA). The project started a year ago, and not all of the benches have been placed yet. We are lucky of having 2 of them in our town.

Sarah | 18550 comments A Labour MP, Jo Cox, was shot and killed yesterday. Britain is in a bit of an uproar at the moment. The attacker alledgedly shouted Britain First as he attacked her. Britain First are a far right political party. There are a lot of theories on motive etc being bandied about. I don't know what to believe right now. The killer has been arrested. I guess we wait for a confession and trial to see what the truth is. All i know is she was one of the good politicians and had done a lot for human and animal rights in her short time in politics and i have no doubt she'd have had much more to contribute. She was also a fellow liveaboard boater. I did not know her. It's rocked the community as she has been involved with one of the boating associations who stick up for boater's rights.
