How old is your grandson, Kristie? Enjoy his stay with you.

We will have him from mid-June to mid-July (3.5 weeks). Then, we are bringing him home for about a week the middle of July for his birthday and we will visit family and friends while there. Then, he will be with us for another 3.5 weeks until mid-August.
It will be a lot of fun. We used to spend a lot of time with him when we lived closer, but don't get to see him very often now. I am looking up fun summer activities and day trips in our area. Thank you. :)

I've also had biting dreams that I've woken up to being eaten alive by mossies. I just get annoyed, as if it was bad enough to come into my dream, why didn't my body wake me up?!

I went hang gliding yesterday and had a lot of fun. :) Today is now cleaning day...blah.

I just have a couple of piles of paperwork that needs to be sorted and a home found for it.
Since the boxes of uninstalled desk furniture are finally out of my living room, I gave everything a good dusting and vacuum. I feel like I can breathe again - literally and figuratively. I keep looking at the empty space in my living room and feeling all warm and fuzzy. That was a long haul!

I've been up and down, laying on the floor under my desk hooking up the computer and stringing cords so many times that I'm a bit stiff and sore. LOL! I have another bag of garbage to haul out to the dumpster, but it's going to wait until tomorrow.
But, I keep walking over to my office to look in. It's a good feeling.

I'm sure it is!
BTW, how is your creative course going?

Funny dream, Sarah!
I'm so glad things are back to normal for you now, Janice! I know that must feel wonderful!

I would love to limit it but she is such a little social butterfly it's hard. She did want to include 2 girls the week before but I drew the line then bc these were girls she knows but not real well so it was easier to say no. :)

Actually, I'm stretched out on the love seat, with coffee in my hand, and my laptop on my lap. Soon, I'll head into my nice clean office. It will be so nice to tie into work with everything so organized. I don't work well in a mess.

I'm sure it is!
BTW, how is your creative course going?"
Oh, it's finished. It was just a 6 week course. I'd like to take a more in-depth course. I didn't get much out of that one but a taste.

All that's left is a couple of piles to organize, a tub of shredding to go to the recyclers, and some old computers/laptop to go to recycle once the hard drives are scrubbed.
Then, I want to tackle my bedroom. It's shocking how much stuff one can accumulate in 4 years.

That was a houseful of giggling girls. Your daughter will think back on that with fond memories when she's older.

Ah I like it, working up to it ;)

Pfew Tasha, that sounds tiring but fun. I remember birthday sleepovers when I was younger, but it was never with 17!
There are three vacancies at my department for assistant professors. I'm debating whether to apply for it or not.

I'm not even sure if I could even get the job even if they wanted me. There's this law in the Netherlands that you can only have 3 temporary contracts in a row while working for the same company. After that, you need a 6-month period in which you don't work for that compant. It was designed to protect employees, so that the chances of a permanent job are higher because employers can't just keep them on temporary contracts indefinitely. But, in the academic world where short temporary contracts are kind of the rule, it ruins your chances of staying at the same university. And I think I had my 3 already.

Peggy, are there any loopholes to being able to take more than 3 temporary positions in a row? For example, maybe you can fill out a legal form or something to request an allowance for an additional contract, that sort of thing?? Or is it a hard and fast law with no allowances? Good luck, if you decide to go for it.

Good luck with you decision, Peggy. :)

I think in the US that tenure means you have received an appointed position as professor after some trial period. Once tenure is earned, it means very good job security. You can't be let go without the university making a case against you for some "just cause." Assistant professorships are usually the way forward to full professorships i think so you should probably go for it!

I can never hear the words "white wash" without thinking of Twain's story about the boys painting Aunt Polly's fence.

Peggy, there's no harm in trying, is there?
