Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I guess it was snails. We just found 7 or 8. We put beer out and sprayed with the garlic-onion mix.

@Rusalka - The Meet the Author is a cool perk to your job. How awesome!

Yes it sounds good doesn't it. I'm partial to a bit of vodka. Other "experiments" in the kitchen are water kefir grains. A friend of mine has been doing it and she gave me some to have a go with. It ferments and this is supposed to be good for your digestion. My first batch should be ready tomorrow i reckon. We'll see what it's like. The same friend also mentioned sauerkraut which I've not had before. Before trying to make it i thought I'd buy a cheap jar first so i don't waste my time. My partner and i had just a few strands and promptly removed it from our plates. I won't be making that and that jar will be heading to my friend's boat.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sauerkraut is not my thing either.

We have thrown over 20 snails and slugs (we call them 'naked snails' :D) out in just 3 hours.

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Awesome, Rusalka, about literary contacts thru work!!

Good to know these recipes for critter repellent. Also the eggshells to repel snails and slugs.

Had to smile, Sarah, at your "only i could do something like this" comment. I'm sure i could manage it!! LOL!!!

Hope you all are staying dry and safe in SC and that you'll be back on your merry way very soon, Joan : )

I'm partial to blueberries. :)

I quite like sauerkraut. It's ever so tasty with a hot dog. My grandmother would stew pork in it. Yummy! Oh, and she made a type of pierogi with it.

message 1957: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I like sauerkraut, too, if it's fermented properly. Very yummy.

For past 3 months, i've been making milk kefir at home daily or near daily. Have even traveled with my kefir grains so as not to be without them. Has improved my energy level, skin health, and helped me lose 4 pounds without trying. LOVE my kefir!!!

message 1958: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That is good to hear TJ about the kefir. I thought someone had mentioned it on here before. I'm using the water kefir because i don't drink milk. Just poured my first batch in to a bottle and tastes ok. Just got to see if i can get my partner to drink it. Energy levels, skin health and digestion improvements are what I'd like help with.

message 1959: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I like sauerkraut too. It is a taste I had to get used to, because at the beginning was too intense for me. My husband loves it, and he is good at cooking it too, with sausage and pork, and then we eat it with a good mustard and apple sauce, and of course a strong beer is encouraged. :)

message 1960: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments We've been eating sauerkraut lots on kranskys. But I remember you're Veggie. But I think it goes well with big flavours, so hot mustard and cheddar cheese is what we eat it with. Maybe on a garlic butter baked flat mushroom with the above? I also think you need a good brand. Mine is made by hippies in Byron Bay but is delicious and worth the money, cheap stuff can be nasty. And the brand is called Peace, Love and Vegetables, so what's not to love.

We also have started eating kimchi for the same reasons, and yakults frequent in our fridge when they are cheap. Same with kombucha, looking at brewing our own. Will add kefir to the list to investigate.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Saw Daniel O'Malley tonight. Bought Stiletto which has come out in Australia before everyone else (yes!), and got The Rook signed. Very funny, lovely guy. Lots of fun stories, and the humour in his books are very much part of him it seems. If he ever book tours around your place, go see him. Can't wait to read the book!

message 1962: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I might try a more expensive sauerkraut then. Sounds like it could be good on the garlic mushrooms.

Kombucha is similar to kefir but requires caffeine whereas kefir doesn't. So I'm told. A friend said kefir is easier to ferment or at least they've had more success with it.

message 1963: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Disclaimer, haven't tried on the mushrooms, but thinking of a vegetarian alternative with large flavours. Now I want garlic butter mushrooms.

My understanding is that water kefir has similar profile to milk kefir is most ways, but my own experience is only with milk kefir. Are you using coconut water to make your water kefir, Sarah?

Digestive issues were actually my real reason for turning to kefir, and it's been so beneficial. I have chronic acid reflux on a daily basis due to hiatal hernia. Doctor put me on rx of omeprazole (generic "Prilosec") last spring. Kefir has made it possible for me to discontinue taking it.

However, i do still have to take half to one Pepcid almost daily, but i think it's a safer class of drug. I suspect, but don't know for sure, that the kefir being made from milk is probably important for it helping with my reflux.

I love my kefir! It's sort of like yogurt, but has even more probiotics and loaded with B vitamins, minerals, and tryptophan. I think that's why it has the "feel good" effect that it does. Very calming and centering i find.

The lactose in it gets consumed during the fermentation process . I just love making it at home overnight. Very easy. I just drink it straight usually, about 6 oz morning and night. Some people like to add it to smoothies, or like to add something sweet to it to counter it's tangy, slightly sour taste (sort of like buttermilk).

The other positives, like improvements to skin and energy level plus gradual, easy weight loss, were things i didn't even know to expect. For some reason, kefir checks my appetite for junkier foods, especially chips, french fries, and the like.

message 1966: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I have just been using filtered water and a couple teaspoons of sugar which is what the grains eat up during the fermentation stage. I saw that the lactose is eaten up with the milk kefir. I'm not lactose intolerent, just don't drink milk because i don't like it now. I was trying to be vegan for a while and went on to soya milk and now i can't drink milk even though I'm not vegan anymore (just veggie). Apparently the milk kefir don't work so well in milk substitutes. So water kefir it is. Great that you were able to come of a medication due to the improvements you had whikst drinking kefir. We sampled the first batch and it's good and my partner liked it too. Bonus!

Back to work today after the bank holiday weekend. We got loads done on the boat.we now have floorboards in our bathroom and our new toilet arrived. Getting closer. We had great weather at the weekend so enjoyed sitting out side watching the MANY boats go by. The first mayflies, damselflies and dragonflies were out and about and we've been serenaded by the all night sedge warbler and the daytime willow warbler - two very noisy, but lovely birds. 9 ducklings and their parents are making daily visits to our boat along with a juvenile swan which sits outside acting a little like a guard dog. It's cloudy now which is good as i have to go to work :-)

I was working on a paper and made a lot of changes today, but something went wrong and all I have now when I open the file again is the one I started with in the morning. I always thought I saved compulsively while working in Word, but apparently not. I want to cry.

Sarah, I can commiserate with you, too. When we put my desk together it was much bigger than I thought. I was expecting it to be smaller than my original desk, but it is actually bigger. Oops!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Talking about it, Janice, how are things going with your office?

message 1979: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments It's a work in progress, Sandra. I've been waiting two weeks for my son to come and set up my new desk suite. My cousin and her husband took pity on me when they were visiting last week and assembled the desk. They were unable to finish. So, the credenza & its pedestal are in pieces in my living room. The lateral file cabinet came assembled and it is in my living room.

I've decided to not say another word to my son about it. Next weekend, my friend's husband is going to finish everything for me.

In the meantime, I'm leaving right away (just finishing last minute updates) for a mountain getaway in Jasper. I'll be back late Monday and will likely have limited exposure to internet while I'm gone.

Have a great weekend everyone.

I googled and tried several things for half an hour, but no luck. It is supposed to autosave every ten minutes, but I couldn't find the autosave-file. It wasn't in the folder where it was supposed to be.

message 1983: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Oh Peggy, yeah, I have been there. And did what you did. Wasted two hours trying to get the file back to not avail. After that, I lowered my auto-save to 2mins instead of 10. Try that.

Have a great weekend, Janice.

CFDeeDee @Peggy Ooh my .. That happened to me before, but I found that word would save a temporary copy when that happens, it shows up on a side bar when Word get closed without saving !

@Sarah big toilet? How come ? I find it strange to design something without measurement

@Janice Enjoy ..

message 1991: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee I've been swamped up lately ..
I had a crazy 8 hours job for 15 days, a lot of projects to work on "art and crochet" and then I had to go shopping and buy some suits for my other job, and thought of stealing couple ties from my brother :P

Had couple order problems, had new books. Did this and that .. Kinda miss being free for a while!

Last night my father was cutting a watermelon -in such heat a cold watermelon is a nice choice - and accidentally he cut his hand.

message 1992: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments How is your father's hand today, CFDeeDee? I hope he's okay. Cuts can be very bad things. Must be very cautious of infection.

Sounds like you've been crazy busy. Hope you get some free time soon!

message 1993: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments CFDeeDee wrote: "@Sarah big toilet? How come ? I find it strange to design something without measurement."

We knew the size of it but knowing the size and seeing the size are two very different things. This toilet is a specialist compost toilet so isn't your standard toilet size for one thing. And secondly, living on a boat that's only 6ft10 wide, anything is big. Also doing any kind of renovations on a boat which has sloping sides and a curved roof is pretty hard going and often there is an element of trial and error involved.

message 1994: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee @Tejas Thanks for asking .. The bleeding stopped and I guess his cut is a lot better today. No stitches needed so far !

@Sarah A limited space could be a problem sometimes ..

How do you feel about it now that your hair has dried, Sarah? Do you like it?

message 1999: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Well it's the morning after! My head feels a lot lighter than it did that's for sure. Feels good because of that. I have very fine hair but A LOT of it and it's long. It means that it tangles really easily. I can wash my hair, brush it, step outside and it's already started to dred up underneath. I've always had to have layers in my hair but it still doesn't make a huge difference when my hair gets longer than a certain length. So I had the crazy idea of having an undercut as it would get rid of the hair which causes me a problem. I was going to get it done at the hairdresser but my partner has clippers and he cuts his hair all the time with them so I thought he might as well try it. I was a bit nervous I have to say. But I knew that if I didn't like it, I would just have to wear my hair down all the time until it grew back as you can't tell at all when it's down. I'm amazed at how much hair I still have left though. It's still thick and bushy. It's difficult to say how much has been cut off. It's cut in a straight line at the back and I've had about 1.5cm taken off just above my ear. So a reasonable amount. It's VERY obvious with my hair in a ponytail, less obvious when I twist it up and clip it with the hair flopping down. I'm liking it. I did take some pictures last night but they didn't come out too well as it was a bit dark in the boat. I'll try and get some pictures tonight and post.

message 2000: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee WoooooW .. You are so brave. I would never cut my hair that short .. I'll wait for the pics ;)
