I knew it was an insult, but I had no idea that's where that word originated from! No wonder you all die when you see the American sod signs. lol

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Thank you, Sarah, for the book and cd recommendation. I'll definitely check these out. I'm already making some changes that are supposed to help. Avoiding computer screen exposure before bedtime. Having and keeping bedtime rituals and schedules. Sleeping in cool, dark room.

Still have the tinnitus. It's not a totally new thing for me to experience some times, but i haven't had such a persistent case. In the past i seem to associate having it after combining acohol, loud music, and then aspirin. Mostly long ago in college days. This time it's for sure nothing like that. I have been traveling by air quite a bit in the past few weeks so maybe that is some how a factor. Any way, i agree about it maybe just being a coincidence about doing the auditory brainwave entrainment. If it is actually related, i think it could be the head phones are more the issue. But you have to use headphones or the auditory effect coesn't work. I have very sensitive hearing. Another thing that can contibute to sleep difficulties - even with ear plugs.

Any way, thanks again.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments TJ, the theory of the plane sound reasonable to me. My husband flights pretty often and he suffers from discomfort in his ears for days after the it. He also suffers from vertigo, very mild though, but planes make things worst.

message 1907: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The vertigo and ear discomfort from flying are because of pressure changes in the inner ear. Your husband should never fly if he has a head cold or sinus condition, Sandra. They are not causes of tintinitus, but could cause the ringing to be more apparent.

I have had it since my mid thirties. There are days when it is noisier than others, but never goes away. In noisie restaurants and in the car, I have a hard time understanding people speaking. My right ear is noisier than my left one, but I do not know why, but it is probably a level of hearing loss in my right ear. I am sitting in the cafeteria at work and there is a guy talking at a table 10 feet in front of me. I can hear him because he is facing me, bit the other person is sitting to the side and I cannot hear him at all.

I used to try to listen to music to go to sleep, but I have found that listening to an audio book, where I already know the story, works the best for me. I set the timer for 15 minutes and am almost always asleep before the book stops. If something is bothering me or my brain will not shut down, it may take longer. If I am tired, I cannot sit and listen to an audio book at all. I have to be up and moving or doing something that keeps my eyes and or hands busy.

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments My father had constant tinnitus from some point in his life. He was an outdoorsman, who pusued hunting and fishing activies. We always thought that shooting rifles and shotguns were responsible for his tinnitus. But seems like some ears are just more predisposed.
I think viruses sometimes cause damage to hearing.

When we've tried audio books at bedtime, my spouse goes to sleep within 10 minutes while i remain wide awake and listening to him snore. This is another part of my difficulty getting to sleep. I want him to talk to his doctor about sleep apnea. I know there are sme effective treatments available (one is something called a CPAP machine - continuous positive air pressue- that keeps the airway open). We know several people who use these nightly. Say it works great. Not sure everyone loves them. Some don't like or get used to wearimg the nose mask.

Listening to waterfall or rainfall sounds seems to help me. Kind of masks husband's snoring and snorting. Funny thing is if he gets quiet and i don't hear any breathing/snoring, then i worry he's stopped breathing. I never used to worry this until after big heart attack he had in 2010. Argh.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Colleagues of mine are doing very promising work on cognitive behavioural therapy for tinnitus. They found very positive results in their clinical studies.

But it's probably more suited for people who can't function anymore because of it, not if you already know how to cope with it.

My ex-husband uses a CPAP, TJ. He said he had a hard time getting used to the mask, but he said it works and he is glad he did it. I could not believe the difference in how he looked, the last time I saw him, before he got the machine. He was just gray looking and tired all of the time, because he was not getting any sleep. (neither was his poor wife - because of his snoring). He looks 20 years younger since he started using the machine and he said he has so much energy that he doesn't know what to do with himself.

message 1911: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments That's great, Cherie. I'm so glad to hear another positive report about CPAPs. Now, to get my spouse to take action. I think it may take me making him the dr. appointment, but i think he'd go.

That's sounds helpful, Peggy, about good results using cognitive behavioral therapy for dealing with tinnitus. I can see how that could be very beneficial, especially for those dealing with ongoing chronic tinnitus.

Sounds like you have adjusted well to having this condition, Cherie, tho it also does interfere with your hearing comprehension at times. Mine is less loud today. Still there but less evident. Has only involved right ear this time. Maybe it will keep fading out. Hope so tho still won't know its cause.

I am resigned to having it, TJ, so I guess that is adjusting. It is annoying and some days more so than others, but from all I have seen and read, there is nothing they have really found to do about it. I watched an info commercial the other day. At the end, they wanted $197.00 for a CD for some audio recordings that are supposed to make everything go away. Nope!
Sometimes I cannot decide if it is a ringing or a what it really is. In my right ear, it is definitely a continuous high pitched buzz with a ringing noise. In my left ear, it is mostly a hiss, like air seeping out of a tire. I try not to pay attention because when I concentrate on it, it becomes more noticeable. I just think about it as background noise. I carry my own white noise with me, I guess.

Good luck with your therapy. I hope it works for you!

i'm the same.I am so busy that if I do not have a structure, and schedule, studying is not very efficient. I tend to put it aside as "tomorrow I will not be as tired and learn more... " or the like. That fact that while some classes are useful in my job (language skills always are) they are not work related. Studying is fun. Then again I will be a student all my life. Hard to manage with working full time. and lately it is my reading and goodreads time that went down.

In the no related to work whatsoever department: In June I am doing a 3 days formation in Feline behavior. I can't wait. Or course it HAD to be at the same time as the toppler. :(

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments I just realize I forgot to tell you about the literary ball.

Last fall, the long awaited "maison de la littérature" (house of literature) opened its door. I love it. They go out of their way to find great events. Last month I attended a "literary ball", a mix of public reading and dancing. We figured it would either be awesome or really bad but it would be interesting and worth going no matter what. So we went.

How did it work?
Friday morning: 5 authors got together. They were a mix of French and Quebec authors, They got a outline together and selected songs and each went to write 2 "chapters" of the story. Each chapter had to end with the title of one of the chosen songs. This text is "one event" thing and will never be used again.

Saturday evening: They got on stage and read their story. When the title of a song came up, the song would play. We would all get up and dance. And then sit back down and listen to the next chapter, and so on until the end.

I really hope they do this again. I really was a fun event.

Not related whatsoever. More related as my former career as a biologist (animal ecology /behavior). It is just something I am good at. Pet's behavior and training could become a part time occupation for when I retired but I do not thing I would go for it, Just the insurance fee scares me (let's say you are training dog with the owner and it get loose and bites someone. My computer had a meltdown recently. All started with updating from Windows 7 to Windows 10. With help from two different neighbors and from my husband and one new wifi adaptor compatible with Windows 10, i pretty much have my desktop computer back on line tho still reloading and restoring wiped data. Have been considering Linux as alternate OS. Any fans out there?

Any luck with resurrecting your phone, Peggy?

Hope you can resolve readily and without big cost outlay!

I understand about resigning yourself to it, Cherie, and you've probably already done so, but if you haven't, i'd urge you to consult an audiologist. Sometimes there are things they can do to resolve or help mask tinnitus. But many times there aren't. If i were facing chronic tinnitus with no other treatment option, i think i'd be a person who'd benefit from cognitive/behavioral therapy to help me adjust to dealing with this. It's been bugging me a bunch so it would take some adjusting for sure.

Btw, the therapy that i'm attempting at present is to address insomnia and other sleep issues i'm dealing with. Tinnitus came up because i was afraid that the auditory brainwave entrainment might be triggering tinnitus. Still think so. Haven't done this auditory technique in four days, and my tinnitus has improved steadily over this time. Could well be coincidence. But since I'm currently having pretty good luck with other relaxation techniques, i'll avoid giving this auditory stuff another go until such time as i'm willing to risk another round of tinnitus!

Oh, or see if the tinnitus comes back any way!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I bought a new one. Mine had issues for months already. Most of my stuff was on my sd card or in some back up I didn't know I had, but strangely I lost all phone numbers. If I can get the old one to work somehow I can transfer them, and if not, I guess it's nice to start a new list with only numbers I actually need :)

message 1928: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments A Motorola Moto G.

It's slightly too big for my taste, I prefer smaller phones (the old one was a Samsung S4 mini), but all the small phones currently out there are either out of my price range or do not fit my wishes (not that I have that many). But I'm getting used to it.

How are you feeling today Sarah?

When I woke up this morning I found that someone has been snacking of our veggie garden all night :( We had almost no issues since we started it, until now. Bird, snail, rabbit, I have no idea..

I'm spending today cleaning and making healthy snacks for work. Oatmeal bars with dates and hazelnuts and oatmeal muffins with blueberries. First time I'm making something like this, it went pretty fast and easy, hope it tastes good too.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Stay safe with the storm, Joan.

Sarah, you're oven encounters sound very similar to my own. Lucky it wasn't hot!

I'm flat out with work again, so sorry I've been a bit absent. I am seriously thinking about what I need to do, not enjoying it really, and taking up so much time. I emailed a bookstore about a manager job they had going the other day, but it was almost half my salary at the moment. I'm all for taking small cuts to be happy, but that's silly.

However, I'm off to see Daniel O'Malley tomorrow at work, who wrote The Rook. And then Tara Moss on Wednesday who wrote Fetish, and The Fictional Woman (also The Blood Countess but haven't read or heard about that series). Benefit of spending lots of time at work, is that I've befriended the Emeritus Professor who runs the Meet the Author series after the Jasper Fforde event. And this has involved me being copied into a whole heap of emails about events going to the literary in the know people in the city. Very awesome. And there will be some other really big names coming to work in the next few months too!

Sarah | 18550 comments My jaw was stiff this morning but as the day has gone on, I hardly notice it now. Which is good. Very thankful it wasn't hot.

That's cool Rusalka about being included on the list and getting to see authors.

How about netting on top of your veg Peggy? That would stop birds. Love the sound of the things you cooked. I cooked a banana cake yesterday which was very nice. And made some blueberry vodka although have to wait a couple months before its ready.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments That's good to hear, Sarah. Also, your banana cake sounds lovely!

Peggy, I agree with Sarah, netting would be a good way to stop the birds and critters getting at your veggies. We have done that before and it worked well. However, if it's slugs or snails, you may want to put some pellets or salt down.
