Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Wow, Sarah! That's impressive and unnerving at the same time.

message 1852: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments But, I want to know too, Joan!
(I definitely do not envy my 6yo grandson's teacher! He not only wants to know why, he knows how to look up the questions on his iPad when he gets home.). He was watching a You Tube video about how to open a tin can without a can opener, the other day when I went over to my daughter's apartment. He said he likes to watch "the crazy Russian hacker guy".

message 1853: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments That is funny as we just got done building a bunch of fence and my 5 year old wants to know is the wire electricity. Yes. What does it do? Shocks you. What is that like. Well I can't explain it grab onto it like i did as a kid and it will all be clear. Except don't touch the fence because its electric.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Funny, Travis!
Did the cows complained yesterday?

Joan, Kids can ask the most crazy/complicated questions you could never think of!

message 1855: by Joan (new)

Joan I want to watch the crazy russian hacker guy too.

message 1856: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Joan - I watch him too, I just didn't know that Ryan did. Normally, he watches MineCraft videos.

Travis - I think I was 9. It was on a dare. It was the one and only time I EVER touched an electric fence. It was at the end of the cow pasture at the end of our housing development. Of course, we weren't supposed to be out there!

message 1858: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Joan, how does a guide dog know when to cross the street?

I had another busy weekend. We went to a country music/comedy show Friday night. Colt Ford was the musician and it was my first country concert. I like some country music, but not my genre of preference. I was enthralled by one of the men in the band though. He played the electric guitar, fiddle (violin), banjo, regular guitar, harmonica, and he sings too!

The comedian was Rodney Carrington. He was hilarious, but very dirty. I knew this going in and assumed that everyone that was at the show would have known this as well. Apparently not though, as there were two women there with three children between of the ages of about 5-8. I really expected them to leave when, during the intro, the announcer said "if you are offended by the word vagina, don't worry, the word p***y will be used instead." But no, they stayed through the entire intro (which was most definitely R rated) and at least 10-15 minutes into the monologue which was very explicit. I can only imagine the ride home and the 5 year old little boy asking if a vagina is a type of cat... Or one of the little girls asking what a blowjob is.

Kristie | 19146 comments Oh geez, Kimey! They should have left earlier. I'm glad I don't have to field those questions. Lol. Glad he was funny though. I love comedy shows, when they are good.

Kristie | 19146 comments I went to aerial yoga yesterday and it's just not for me. It's too bad because it looks like a lot of fun, but I simply can't do the things I could do when I was younger. I used to be able to do all sorts of flips and hang upside down without issue. Apparently, it now makes me dizzy and nauseous. So disappointing, but at least now I know and can move on. Off to a regular yoga class tonight. :)

message 1861: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Kimey, you made me laugh! I would have runaway if I would have been there with my kids! I hate these kind of questions. They are funny only when it happens to other parents! :)

Kristie, I'm sorry aerial yoga didn't work for you, but great that you are not giving up and will be attending a regular yoga class.

Sorry to hear the aerial yoga didn't work out for you, Kristie. At least you gave it a go. It certainly doesn't sound like the sort of thing that will appeal to everyone.

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm really excited. I've decided to go back to school. We'll, not exactly. I'm signing up to do an advanced diploma in Hypnotherapy at the same place I went for the course last week. Just part time for 2 years. It doesn't start until October but I'm already looking forward to it.

Joan For all of you that wonder how guide dogs are trained - I'm not exactly sure - I know they use positive reinforcement to teach the dog not to move forward if there are cars in motion and they build on the dog's instinct for self-preservation to keep them out of traffic.

We are off on our road trip in the 1960's austin-healy this week, down Skyline Drive and The BlueRidge Parkway, across Alabama to The Natchez Trace Parkway. Then Hot Springs Arkansas, the Ozarks and finishing in Denver - I hope the car, my butt, and our marriage hold up!

Joan, I hope you (and your butt) enjoy the trip. I remember trips along Skyline Drive fondly. Are you going to stay there overnight? There should be lots of plants coming into bloom so it should be a really beautiful drive. I envy you :)

Do you not use that i word in the states? It's often used jokingly amongst teenagers revising (or not) for exams. A swot (according to urban dictionary) is "a person who values his education at least three times more than his social life and his teacher at least three times more than his friends, hypothetically". It's just someone who does nothing but homework and revision I guess.

message 1881: by Joan (new)

Joan thanks.
Always wondered what a Swot was. Years ago my Father-in-law laughed heartily over a sign that said "Keep off SOD", over here that means the grass lawn, over there it is apparently very rude.

message 1882: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Sarah wrote: "Do you not use that i word in the states? "

We don't use it either. I've only recently worked out what it means. Definitely a British word.

Grats though! Studying will be heaps of fun!

Sod is used here a lot though, but it's not really rude. But we would laugh a lot over that sign too.

message 1883: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks Rusalka.

I would say the rudeness in the word sod has reduced over the years here in the UK. Back in the day, I think it would have been far more offensive. We have much more colourful words to use now. I'd definitely still laugh at that sign, like Rusalka would!

message 1884: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Lexx's standard name for people is a "sod-monkey" if they do something slightly annoying, like taking the last biscuit, it's pretty low on our scale.

Yes, back in the day, particularly thinking of where the word originated, it would have been a lot more rude.

I'm not sure how it relates exactly to self-hypnosis, but I've been attempting to use auditory brainwave entrainment to induce slumber-friendly frequencies. It's like my brain can't/won't calm down properly sometimes and stays too wakeful. I've had some success with this in fighting insomnia issues of late, but the downside is that in me it's triggering tinnitus. I was so happy to have found a non-medication approach for insomnia, but the ringing in my ears isn't a side effect I particularly want to live with regularly either. Perhaps I could use hypnotherapy to address my insomnia. Hmm...

Sorry to hear about your insomnia. It's no fun i know. I've heard of the auditory brainwave training before. I think an old client of mine had used it. Tinnitus can occur for many reasons (stress, infection, cold/flu, allergy, ear wax etc) so it may not be directly related to what you are doing. Perhaps stop for a couple days and see if it goes away? If you want a taste of hypnotherapy without spending out lots, you could check out I Can Make You Sleep: Overcome Insomnia Forever and Get the Best Rest of Your Life! - it's a book and CD. It's very good.

Could I ask where the word originated? I mean, if the story can be shared in internet...

message 1890: by [deleted user] (new)

I have had a crazy last month or so! My computer decided to die, working from a kindle is hard. I finally have a new computer. Playing catch up now with my book travels!

I have 2 sick kids with the flu, since Saturday. My son also has a sinus infection. They missed school all week, and my routine has just fallen apart, I now clean with Lysol wipes!! I myself on the verge of being sick.

I honestly have not felt much like reading. Audio books have been my go to lately.

message 1891: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Sorry to hear about your crazy month, Kelly. I hope that your two kids get better soon and that things settle down for you.

message 1892: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19146 comments Oh no, Kelly. That is no fun at all. I hope your kids feel better soon and you don't end up with what they had. :(

Glad you're able to enjoy audio books, even though you haven't been in a reading mood.

message 1893: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Kelly, I hope everyone gets better soon. It's really hard to manage these situations when everybody is feeling sick.
Last week my 7 years old son brought a stomach bug from school and generously shared it with the family. 8 out of 10 of us fell sick, and it was not fun at all. I was one of the lucky ones since I didn't had it (the other one was my 20 months old son), but then I was the chosen one to clean the mess. :) Not fun. Not at all!

message 1894: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Yikes! That's what I'd call hectic, Kelly. I hope everyone is on the mend.

Sure, I'll spoiler it though in case people have blockers and work filters and such.

(view spoiler)

So you can see why it was so rude. Now most people wouldn't even think where it came from and would use it as a low level, almost playful insult.

message 1897: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Re the word in message 1885: Someone just uset it in The Redbreast, a couple of chapters ago, just after I opened this thread to see what was going on. I cannot think if I have seen it in print before.

message 1898: by jaxnsmom (new)
