Sarah | 18550 comments Today was my first day out of the boat since Monday. My cold is starting to ease off now which is good. Being outside for most of the day today did me the world of good. I attended a towpath tidy with other boaters, clearing up rubbish, planting a garden and having a picnic. It was really nice. I wasn't going to go because of my cold, just drop my partner off, but I'm pleased i decided to stick around.

Funny how this thread has that effect. I find myself doing the same thing.

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments I'm having a chilled day today. Having a Disney Pixar Marathon Day and crochet.

Had a busy weekend travelling and we went to Alton Towers for my brothers and bf's birthdays and surprised myself by being brave and going on the bigger rides (except Oblivion; thats too terrifying, nor Smiler after the crash last year). Ive been twice in the past but too afraid to go on anything, this time I went on 9 rides.

I think I figured something out. I don't think it's the height I'm afraid of (my mother growing up was afraid of heights and I think I may have thoguht I'd got that fear from her) but in actual fact I think it may be the safety I fear. if we did go on rides with my mom she'd hold us in really tightly and I think that't been passed onto me, I am consciously aware of how I'm held into a ride, if it has any give etc. And Alton Tower rides keep you in so well there is no budge or anything so I felt pretty safe even though a ride did break down on 'Thirteen' tho lol.

That sounds like fun, Sarah! Enjoy your Disney Pixar marathon! Sounds like you had a good time at Alton Towers. Well done for going on all those rides :) I love big rollercoasters/rides but there is no way I would go on the Smiler after what happened. I'm surprised they opened it again, tbh. What were the queues like for that? Were a lot of people still going on it?

message 1708: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments It was great fun. Thank you I was quite proud of myself and Steve was too. My brother had a headache after though he said he could hear me screaming and he wasn't even on that ride haha. And he said I burst his eardrums when I sat next to him on 'Nemesis' lol.

I know yeh well our little grop wouldn't go on it cuz of what happened. The ride is safe but it was the people manning it, I was surprised they reopened it too. Amazingly quite a few people went on it. Not too bad for queues maybe 20 mins max cuz we went on a Friday.

Lol about your brother! Well, you have to scream on those rides, don't you? It's part of the fun.

That's pretty good for the queue times. A friend of mine went with her boyfriend a couple of years ago in early May and I don't know whether they were just unlucky and picked a busy day but they said the queues were awful. Some of them were over an hour. They spent so much time in queues that they only got on 4 rides in the entire day.

message 1710: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Urgh, yes it can get really busy when I went the very first time, my family and my friend went and she wnated to go straight on Oblivion, it was the summer holidays and it was sooo busy, they were in the queue for 2 hour and me, my bro and dad were bored as hell. I think I managed to go on a swing rie, a pirate ship and when it used to be there; the Corkscrew, which was my first proper coaster I'd been on.

I think I screamed louder than some little kids lol haha =D But yes you have to scream, we're looking to Thorpe Park next and maybe Park Asterix in France outside Paris =]

message 1711: by Joan (new)

Joan "Aunt Joan is turning green Mommy" uttered by my 4 year-old nephew after he begged me to go on the Teacup ride with him.

message 1712: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I can't do ferris wheels. About 10 years ago I tried to go on one with a friends 10 year old daughter. We waited in line, got in our seat, and within 2 minutes I was freaking and had to get off. So hooray to all the thrill seekers!

The deck guys came today and tore down the old one. Now the nice big holes are dug and the city will send someone to inspect them tomorrow.

message 1713: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I like most rides but there is this ride in Thorpe Park called Vortex which makes me feel really sick and giddy so I don't go on it anymore.

message 1714: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I've not been to a theme park in well over 10 years. I always liked them though.

Good to hear that their is progress with your deck J'mom.

It's my first day back at work today after being off sick. I have a much further commute at the moment which is a bit annoying but in a few weeks time we'll be heading back in the other direction so it will start getting shorter. I'm quite excited as we've decided to take our boat in to Bristol for the first time in August. I'll practically be able to see my work from the boat so that will be a massive luxury for me. The waterways around Bristol are governed by a different authority which isn't covered by the license we hold so we'll have to pay for a temporary license but it's worth it as it's not far off being the same price that we pay for commuting in. We'll only stop for 2 weeks but I'm looking forward to it already.

message 1715: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I missed about 60 messages while I was away! I did manage to keep my internet turned off though, and it was great :) Definitely going to do that on every holiday now.

Good that you're better again Sarah. I might visit Bristol next year. A friend/colleague of mine got a grant and will do research in Bristol for a couple of months, and I'll go visit her for a weekend.

I came down with a pretty bad cold too. It started in Rome already, but since yesterday it got really bad. I have to go to a funeral tomorrow, but I'm not sure whether I should. The dad of a friend passed away, and I didn't know her dad very well but I wanted to go as support for her (you know, just be present, even though she probably won't even know). But, with my sniffing, sneezing and coughing I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to go sit in that church for an hour. Not because I worry getting sicker, but I'm afraid I will be disruptive and annoying. I'm not sure what to do :/

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Glad you're better, long boat Sarah. Smart to stay home. Not go in and share your cold with people. Hope you shake your cold quickly, Peggy. Maybe better to send a card or make a donation to a nonprofit that your friend supports in memory of her dad. Just a thought. Another way to show support for your friend. Or when your over your cold, take friend out for lunch or something.

That's great that work is progressing so quickly with your deck, Jmom. We had a big storm last night. Many tree branches down. Some areas of city without electric.

About roller coasters and spinning rides... I used to love them. But any more, I'm like you Sarah (SarahLou). I just physically fear that some mechanical aspect of the ride will fail. Didn't use to think about that. Now I do.

message 1719: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Sounds like you had a nice time away Peggy. A shame you have come back with a cold though. I can see why you are unsure whether or not to go to the funeral. I went back to work yesterday as I'm feeling like a human again but I still am sniffling and coughing occasionally and I've tried to suppress some of those coughs so as not to be disruptive in my work but it just makes it worse and I end up having a massive coughing fit. See how you feel this morning.
If you do come to Bristol Peggy, we should meet up for a coffee!

Sarah, I usually don't get sick, but for some reason this year I caught the flu, and it took me around 3 weeks to get better. And keep coughing for 7 or 10 days more.

Glad to hear you're feeling better Sarah. I love hearing about your boat living and travels.

Peggy - Yikes, I hope your cold is going away, and that you found a solution to show support for your friend.

My deck is finished, it's a small and simple one, and now I just need to wait to treat and stain it. But there was one more surprise - we had rain the other day and I got home to water dripping in the kitchen. It turned out three baseball bat sized sticks went through the roof. Today the deck guys put silicone in the holes and placed metal over them. We're expecting rain tomorrow and possibly for the next week. I'm waiting for the estimate for that job.

As for Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's apology, that was the most disingenuous apology I think I've ever heard. I guess it was that or go to jail.

message 1728: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59896 comments Sandra wrote: "@Janice, how is your office going?"

Thanks for asking. I still don't have access to my office. The walls and ceiling have been repaired. But for two weeks, the room has been shut off while they wait for the carpet to come in. A week ago, I phoned to find out what the hold up was. She said she'd check and get back to me. She didn't. I suggested they at least prepare the room while they wait for delivery. I've seen nobody. The old carpet is in a heap in the middle of the floor.

I'm living in hoarder's hell because all the contents from my office are cluttering up my living room and bedroom. I have set up my work station at the kitchen table but it's far from optimal working conditions.

I've had to fight with my insurance company to cover the contents of my office. I have tenant insurance ($1000 deductible) with an entrepreneurial package to cover my business ($500 deductible). They were determined it was to go to the tenant package. I asked for an explanation as to why it wouldn't go to the EP since the damage was restricted to my office which is used solely for my business. They finally decided to put it under the EP. So today, I'm desk shopping.

Four weeks of fighting and delays, and I don't feel like I'm further ahead. It weighs heavy on me. My functionality at my work is down 30-40%, and it's extremely frustrating.

I keep trying to be positive. I know this is only temporary. It will be fixed and back in order. I'll have a new desk, chair, walls, paint job, and carpet.

My dad reminded me last night that we have a date in the mountains. We've rented a cabin in Jasper the first weekend of June (my mother's birthday - our first since she died). I told him I wasn't likely to forget. I really need to get away for a bit of respite.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I can imagine how frustrating and upsetting all of this has to be, Janice. A weekend in a cabin is a great idea, and the timing is perfect. Think that your house will look so much bigger when all your office stuff is back in its place!

And I know I've already said that, but it's incredible how much damage an only water tank can do...

@Janice - I can't believe they have made such little progress on your office. That is so frustrating. I don't function well when my environment is disorganized either. I hope they get moving soon. I have had children/young adults living at home for the past 26 years, so it feels strange to not have any here. They both live out of state too, which makes it even more strange. I'm very happy for them though, as they both have individual lives that they are living. I guess I'm kind of torn - sad that there not around, but happy that they're spreading their wings.

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I'm so sorry to learn of the difficulties you've been facing. Your situation brings to mind the fire we experienced in our previous home. It was due to faulty gas plumbing on the city's side. They've now begun addressing the problem of old gas plumbing. We were just extremely lucky we didn't blown to kingdom come.

And that was such a difficult year. Same year I had horrible foot injury - lis franc fracture and dislocation. Past (successful) treatment was mid-foot amputation.

Ohg, I'm so glad that i didn't have to go thru this back when that was the best treatment available.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, and please don't be down on yourself for work productivity being down. Nobody is 100% all the time. Everybody has some lower productive time.

Glad you have something positive to look forward to like getting away on a mountain retreat with your dad. Wish I still had my dad, and that we'd EVER gone on a mountain retreat together. Yes, tad envious. But very happy you have this.
