Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Voting for a third party is still voting. I wholeheartedly approve.

That Trump stuff is why I don't like the system you guys have of registering for a party and how you will vote. Here you just get your named ticked off from a roll of everyone, and then given a form with no identifiers to vote with. You don't even tell your spouse who you voted for unless you want to.

To be honest, I don't really know. They act drunk most of the time anyway. I don't think a few snails between a few chickens is enough really though.

Oh, they are heavy drinkers. :D

Joan Do chickens eat snails? Do they like escargot in garlic butter sauce?

message 1607: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I think they like escargot drowned in beer. :)

message 1608: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments My girls used to like to pick up the big slugs and fling them into the street for the cars to run over. I have tried the beer route, but we get too much rain, typically, and in the summer it evaporates too fast. I agree with Rusalka, if I had to pick them off, it would be a full time job. Chickens are great bug and snail and slug eaters, if you can keep them from eating the garden too. It is okay to let them roam in the established beds/gardens, but they will eat the young sprouts and sometimes peck at the vegetables.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh, and yes, Travis. I know to use straw vs hay bales.

message 1610: by Joan (new)

Joan do you think that wild turkeys will also eat slugs? Turkeys have just started appearing in my yard - scared the living-daylights out of one of the cats! She thought she was all-that sneaking up on them until they suddenly spread their wings and started squawking (the dog ran into the bathroom for safety).

message 1611: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments That's a great visual, Joan. Sounds like it wasn't just the cat that was scared.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So glaf to wake up and see we aren't at war with Russia. I really expected to find we were. Instead Russia says hey bro we weren't causing anyone any harm. Chillax. Ok maybe that isn't the exact quote but it is the attitude. Since Russia woukdn't respond on the radio at the time kudos to pur navy for not shootinf them down. Personally wheb you are on a ship in middle of water and planes basically play chicken with you its gotta be tense and hard not to shoot them down. Esoecially after numerous fly by's

That made me laugh! I think they probably would eat them too.

I've been seeing so many turkeys on my commute lately! And that thought combined with the fact that I'm replying to your comment, Joan, reminded me.... Are you still planning your road trip that will take you on the Natchez Trace Parkway?

message 1615: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I think the wild turkeys would eat just about anything that came their way, Joan. My sister, who lives in southern Oregon says that her neighbors feed them cracked corn to keep them around. She said between the turkes and deer, she has given up on trying to have a garden. Everything she plants has to have a chicken wire cage around it to survive. I have seen them in the dry, oak scrubland in San Jose, California. They eat acorns and scratch around in the leaf litter and eat insects.

Sarah | 18550 comments What an amazing day at the demonstration. Excellent to hear it made the Aussie news. Over 150000 people in total. It was a cold day. The main protest finished at Trafalgar Square. Our section of the demo marched on to Downing Street to hand in a petition. There were a few additional unsavoury types there which meant a big influx of police all of a sudden. No trouble though from what I could see. Just a precaution I guess. My mum was convinced she'd see me on TV being dragged off by riot police. I'm pleased to say that didn't happen :-) Interesting how not many of the UK tv channels have featured the march yet other countries have. I'll try to upload some pictures tomorrow for you guys to see.

message 1619: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That picture in the article with the smoke being set off - we were stood not far behind that. The guys with the scarves over their face are the unsavouries I mentioned. In that picture you can see someone with a CRT placard in the background - they were part of our section of the demo.

message 1620: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Didn't make news here, well maybe national news I don't know. Trump and Bill Clinton were in town so that was the big news. I don't get the point of the purple smoke monsters myself but I guess they know what their message was. Still covering your face is a coward move so why do the smoke thing and hide your identity if you believe so strongly in what your doing. A coward dies a thousand deaths they say and its true

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Finally finished setting all the posts for the corrall we are building. Well mostly my buddy did it amd I told him how I wanted it. Know your role. I wasnt gonna have straight level posts if I did it because I'm not that good. He came back with his girlfriend to unload more concrete mix. After she left he tells ne how she was unimpressed with the oroject. I told him get used to it your wife or girlfriend will never fully appreciate these things unless they are in the project as well. My wife says its like a fisherman telling a story about a big fish. When we go in amd talk about all this work they just expwct sonehing a little more grandiose. I get it. If you make or build something a little more fancy or for the house or something you will recieve much more praise. And I know I do the same thing when she tells me stories about her work. I too am not there and don't get it the same way as her and her coworkers do. Just the way it is no one is trying to diss the other side or make them feel small or anything for us she saw 9 posts in the ground I mean it really isn't too imoressive unless you were digging the holes mixing the cement and yada yada.

Lynda | 836 comments Today is my only day off this week, and likely next week as well. We have 1 more week in our old office, as our internet should finally be up and running at the new place. Right now we are working with the bare necessities. I spent all day organizing all our supplies and parts inventory in our new warehouse, so I feel good about that. However, the outcome is that I don't want to do all the things I need to do today: clean, groceries, cook, etc. I just want to sit on the couch and read a book!

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I'm glad to hear the protest went well, Sarah! No protests for me, but I had a very busy weekend. Saturday especially. That morning I was up early to get ready for the Color Vibe 5k which was about an hour away. My sister and one of her friends and kids went, along with two of my nieces and a friend, 9 of us in total. It was a lot of fun, but one of my nieces started getting sick after about 1/4 of the way into the 5k. She and I stopped so she could sit down for a little bit. There was a police officer near where we stopped and he came to check on us and called for another car to come and give us a ride back to our car since my niece didn't think she could finish. It was the first, and hopefully only, time I've been in the back of a police car! LOL. By the time the rest of the group finished the 5k and made it back from the finish line dance party, my niece was starting to feel better, so we went to lunch and then home.

Once home I was in a mad dash to get the color washed off and ready to go to a friend's gender reveal party, which was also almost an hour away from my house. I made it to the party with 10 minutes to spare, so I was doing good! After the party was over (she's having a girl, btw), a couple of friends and I were off to get supper and to the "I Love the '90's" concert. We made it to our seats right when they were introducing Tone Loc. Overall the concert was a lot of fun, but there were a few dull moments. Color Me Badd bored me. I only knew one of their songs, and it isn't one I especially like. Vanilla Ice was good, but I only know "Ice Ice baby" and his show was kind of weird. He had a clown on stage dancing and I still don't know why. I liked the songs he performed, but they didn't sound like 90's rap at all. Coolio was okay, I was mainly mesmerized by his antler style hair. Kidd and Play were funny. Salt & Peppa w/Spinderalla put on a really good show. I'm torn between them or Tone Loc being my favorite of the night. I just love "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina."

message 1626: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Loved Tone Loc when i was younger. Sounds like you had a good weekend KimeyDiann. I was very curious about you friend's gender reveal party. I've never heard of the expression (let alone a celebration for it) before. My first thought was that your friend had had a sex change. Then i had images of your friend getting their bits or lack of bits out to reveal to you all. Now i realise (thank god) how wrong i was. Lol.

message 1627: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments KimeyDiann, it sounds like you had a fun/busy weekend. I loved Salt &Peppa back in the day. How did your friend do her reveal (I confess, Sarah, I had a flash of the same thing thought!)? My assistant at work is having a boy, and she baked a white cake with white frosting and filled it with blue M&M's.

message 1630: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Y'all aren't the first ones to think of sex-change surgeries when hearing of a gender reveal party! LOL. A co-worker that moved here from California looked at me like I was insane when I was telling her about it last week. I blame the gender reveal party trend on pinterest and facebook. The one this weekend, they had a two layer cake and the frosting between the layers was pink. I've been to another one where they had a big cardboard box that was filled with helium balloons that floated out when the box was opened. Another I was invited to but didn't get to attend had a piñata filled with blue somethings... I don't know what it was filled with now that I think about it.

Hope you feel better, Sarah!

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks guys. Off work again today as I feel even worse than I did yesterday. I guess it has to get worse before it gets better.

Despite my cold, I'm feeling very pleased and relieved. We have been issued with another 12 month license for our boat. It's not due until the end of May but we've been panicking and worrying that we might not be issued one. I've said before about the CRT being arseholes. I got fed up of waiting and worrying so I thought I'd see if we could apply early for the license. We could and they issued us one straightaway. So we must have satisfied their requirements even if they didn't tell us what they were. So I can breath a sigh of relief.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Yay Sarah! That's wonderful news! We were just talking about this, and were wondering what happens if you don't (which you don't have to think about) get renewed? Do they expect you to move off the boat and then sell it?

Seems like this all is tied into a deep seeded mistrust of river people and gypsies and traders. Which I still find ridiculous. If you liked tea or silk or spices in England, even 100 years ago, you were dependant on people who had movable lifestyles. Bloody stupid.

message 1639: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Great news, sarah! I hope you feel better soon.

message 1640: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments If you get refused a 12 month license, they issue a 6 month which is like probation. Buck up your ideas or your out. Then you would need to remove boat from waterways or sell it. If you don't, they will. Or destroy it.

Discrimination definitely plays a part. As does mistrust. I've willingly joined a minority and it's not nice being on the receiving end of prejudice that's for sure. I also think it's linked with gentrification of the waterways. Priority going to the hireboat companies and those who use their boats for leisure. The CRT can't get their head around people living on boats. But people have always lived on boats on the canals here.

They were important trade routes before the trains came along. We still have roving traders on the canal but are very different to back then - coalboat, laundry, cheese boat, bread boat, wine/cider boat, book boat, ice cream boat and various artists and freative types selling their wares. We have a floating market arranged for the Summer which should be amazing. The first one on this stretch of canal.

Well done Stephanie!

I'm going to Rome tomorrow, till Monday, with my bf, my sister and her bf, and my mom and dad. I'm going to try to stay completely offline for the whole trip, let's see how long I last. I loved it when there was no internet access on Cuba and decided to go offline for every holiday from then on. It was weird the first few days, I felt like I was missing out on things all the time, half the world could explode and I wouldn't know, but it was also so relaxing and peaceful to not be busy at all with forums and facebook and whatsapp and email.
