Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Yup, I hear you as I sit in my crowded living room wondering how I'm going to effectively work today.

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm not surprised you're a bit frustrated with the state of your place Rusalka but I'm pleased to hear it's mainly superficial and it will be back to normal in no time. I hope things will sorted for you soon to Janice. We too are all up in the air. We knocked down the walls of our bathroom, took out the toiler, shower and sink. We have stuff everywhere at the moment while we put new floorboards down. Then we can get new toilet, sink and shower and things will start to go back to normal. But ours is self inflicted so shouldn't complain really.

Lynda | 836 comments Glad you enjoyed your trip Rusalka, and happy to hear your feathered family survived the separation...really sorry that you're left with a bunch of annoyances, though.

I am in sympathy with everyone who feel like their homes are in upheaval. While my home is okay, my office is completely torn apart, as we're relocating to a larger space across town following the sale of one of our retail locations. I'm excited for the change, and I'll enjoy bring order to all the chaos. In the meantime, though, the chaos itself is really stressing my OCD-heart out!

Country looking to increase breweries output and even consider importing beer to keep up with American demand

Sarah | 18550 comments I think I mentioned a few weeks back about a film I went to see about fellow boaters on the Kennet & Avon canal. Well the film has been released now so I'm sharing the hell out of it and thought you guys might like to have a watch. Take it international :-) You will also get a small insight in to my life. Some of the people in the film I know. https://youtu.be/5upAf7waaLg and if you feel like sharing it yourself, that would be awesome. There is also a petition here https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petition... which we'll be handing in to Parliament on Saturday after the National Demonstration. I don't think non-UK people can sign it but it has some information on there which you might find interesting to read.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Ive listened to many narrators from many places. I have to know is upstate NY the only place we say leapt as lept. Would rhyme with left. Everyone says it leehpt. So hard to write vs speak this. We say he leaped over the rock. With a lee sound. Bit if he leapt over the rock we say lept like left. Narrators all say lee regardless. So do we jusy speak that our own way. I mean we do have our own language to a certain extent like anywhere does

Thanks for the link Sarah! I loved watching the documentary and get more of an idea of boating life. You live in beautiful surroundings and it is such an interesting community. I can't believe the CRT can just go about ordering people to move certain distances when there's nothing in the law. Is there no lawsuit or anything going on against them? It seems they are not entitled to make demands like that.

(view spoiler)

message 1508: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments @Peggy - There are court cases going on all the time between individual boaters and the CRT but there hasn't been any public case against them calling their actions in to question. That would be fantastic. Bev and Cub are friends of ours. (view spoiler)

message 1509: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments All during the film I was wondering what would happen so I thought I'd put it in spoilers for others who might watch it. Do the boaters usually win the case? (view spoiler)

message 1510: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Thanks for sharing, Sarah. It's a pity the CRT's position is so tough. (view spoiler) I hope you all find a way to have a more fluid dialog with them.

message 1511: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Travis, I say lept...I'm from Pennsylvania. But there are times I do say leaped, depending on the situation I guess. But then again, I say water (imagine it like wuter) where as most around where I live say water (imagine it like wauter). I'm originally from Phila which is only about 30 min away but it is a constant source of discussion, so I get it! I really do. ;)

message 1512: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Most cases I believe have gone in favour of the boater although there are the odd one that CRT wins. Here, Legal Aid has been cut so people who cannot afford lawyers miss out now. I'm guessing less people take it to court because of this as they can't afford the legal fees. To be fair, I don't know much about the court cases or the legal proceedings involved.

It was filmed last year, at various points. April - August perhaps?!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Don't even get me started. Trying to communicate in the States was a pain.

Although my favourite was watching Lexx and a waitress get more and more confused as he was ordering a Mo-Ka, and she could only understand Moe-car, and he couldn't understand why she couldn't understand him. Who would have thought a Mocha would cause so much trouble/hilarity.

Water was another one we had to put on over the top American accents to be understood.

message 1514: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Thanks for sharing that with us, Sarah. Very interesting and very sad as well that there is so much stress and anxiety for you all. It's such an interesting way of life! I hope it all works out for you.

message 1518: by Tasha (new)

Tasha it's soda in eatern pennsylvania but I think going across the state it eventually changes.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Soft drink.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Soft drink probably is the universal term actually now that I think about it Rusalka

message 1521: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Couple weeks ago my sister singled out my dad blaming him for her getting picked on at school for saying bag. With a long a. Her friends say it with a short a and make it 2 syllables. She gave a 10 mibute lecture. We got home I asked my wife what my sister was going on about a bag is a bag. She says I have no idea except your sisters friends don't know how to speak. A bag is a bag not a bahaig. Regardless you speak how you speak and shame on her for changing the way she naturally speaks. Now she sounds like a moron.

message 1522: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments @Sarah - it seems really unfair and I hope the film brings awareness and changes are made.

@Travis - I was talking with my sister the other day about the soda/pop issue. Here in Canada, it's pop. She says that some of the northern US call it pop, and everywhere else it's soda.

message 1523: by Joan (new)

Joan I say ROUTE but in the US many say rout like in a battle. ugh. I have an austalian voice on my Garmin because I cannot stand the common mispronunciation.

message 1524: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Exactly. Root not rowt

message 1525: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Probably the most contested word is mature. I don't even know who is right. I say machure others say mah-ture. It all comes down to the t being a ta or a ch. And then fortè. I used to say fortay but switched to fort as it seems to be the majority rule. Again I don't know which is correct

message 1528: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I love the pronunciation conversations! Unfortunately I have a pretty thick southern US accent, though I try to get rid of it. The little area I'm from, which covers about 20-30 square miles, has an accent unlike any other.

In the south, it's a coke, not a pop, or soda, etc. Someone offers you a coke, you ask what kind they have. Don't ask me why, I've never understood it. LOL.

With the exception of "watah" I have no idea of any other ways to pronounce water except wah-ter. Leapt rhymes with left like Travis said. I've never heard mature with a ch sound. Fortè is definitely for-tay, that is why there is an accent on the e.

I was trying to explain how southerners (Sutheners) pronounce words like I and EYE, so I googled to see how one would write that out, because I promise we don't say it the way the rest of the world does. I found a description that says it perfectly, in the south we use "long lazy vowels." I or EYE become Ah. You have to say it out loud to get the effect, reading it doesn't convey the sound correctly. LOL.

http://www.asiteaboutnothing.net/w_so... this site is greatness. It has pointed out some things I don't even realize that I do, but that I do. Scroll down the "Dudden, Iden, Waden" section. I don't use "iden" but I am absolutely guilty of the others. I caught myself just yesterday saying something to a co-worker which involved "dudden."

message 1529: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Wow this is gonna be tricky. We dont exactly say dudden. But close to. Instead of dudden't we say dunt it and various closr to southern but isually we just drop some letters.we lose alot of g. Sittin eatin

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Americans and a British guy were arguing this morning on pronouncing soldering iron. The British guy is saying sole-der-ing the amwricans are saying no its sah-der-ing which is of course correct. The Brits going what are you stupid look at the spelling. Don't ask me its sah-der-ing just way it is

message 1532: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Totally say iden only again its more like it- nit. I know because it started snowing and I just said its startin to snow itnit. I'll be damned must be our version of iden

message 1533: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments LOL, I use didden and dudden, it just depends on if its in a present or past tense.
"That dudden sound like a good idea." = "That doesn't sound like a good idea."
"That didden work. " = That didn't work.

It seems like I'm getting more and more country/redneck sounding the older I get. When I was in college and when I worked with the public, I was a lot more aware of my pronunciations, now, I'm pretty sure I sound like an "ignert redneck." LOL.

message 1534: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I just heard a coworker say "wuddunt" ....... "I told him that wuddunt a good job number."

I really don't know why sutheners put the D's in the middle of words. I mean, really, is wuddunt easier to say that wasn't? I know I'm guilty of speaking this way, but how did we manage to change the words and phrases in this way?

message 1535: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Again we go with the t with no s. Wut'nit. But if it was to come at the end of a sentence we go canadian with an eh. That was a good game wasn't it? Takes too long. Good game eh?

message 1536: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I'm going home. I am getting a headache reading and trying to figure out what is going back and forth. Rain, rain, and more rain, here. I got my front yard 1/2 mowed on Sunday but the blackberry brambles are growing back faster than the grass and weeds.

message 1542: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Interesting film, Sarah. Thank you for sharing and letting us see what you and your partner see from your boat and the people you encounter. It is hard to comprehend the logistics of having to move your moring every 14 days and pick up in a new location. To have to figure out where find and buy groceries and necessities, figure out how to get to work and schools, and get from place to place - every two weeks, depending on how far you moved. Incomprehensible to me especially. I have lived in my home since 1977.

It does seem especially unfair for the regulations to be constantly changing. Are the issues going on all over the sysyem, or are they more focused in certain areas? When you move, does it mean move to the next open mooring on the same canal? Or do you have to move to another canal?

message 1543: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks Cherie. Boat life is definitely not suited to everyone because of the moving regularly. Some people do live in marinas and don't have to move but i can't imagine doing that. We are lucky as we don't have kids to contend with but we know many families who have to juggle school runs.

The changes have been affecting the whole canal and river network, although it is more focused on a couple key places where there are more boats - London obviously and the Western end of the Kennet & Avon which is where we are.

When we move, with these new guidelines, we have to move at least 1km before we can moor up again.

Thanks to everyone who watched the film. It had over 1000 views in just the first day of release. It's had a lot of good feedback.

message 1547: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Is 'adult' also a word that is pronounced differently depending on where you are? I always say it like 'eddult', so I guess more emphasis on the 'a', but I generally hear it pronounced as a-dult, with emphasis on the 'dult'. Now I'm trying to say it both ways multiple times and it has become a really weird word.

I have a muscle ache! We started our own little vegetable garden last Sunday, one of those square foot gardening things. So exciting! When we decided to have a little veggie garden in our garden I started doing research and came across this website/book/app for people who start growing veggies for the first time, so I wanted to do it according to that. My boyfriend made fun of me, and said that because his parents had a vegetable garden when he was 9 or 10, he knew how to do it. I made fun of that. So we decided the best thing to do was to have a competition. The garden has 16 squares for planting seeds, and we both have 8 now. I'm doing mine according to the book, I chose easy (but probably a bit boring) veggies that can be planted now and insisted on using proper soil (? right word?) which I read about in my book. Rob is keeping his a secret, but knowing him he has probably chosen all kinds of exotic veggies that won't even grow here. He's also not really bothered by best times to sow seeds, he just threw them in the earth and would have been happy with any kind of sand. It looks nice though! I'm most looking forward to being able to pull my own carrots out of the ground :D
