message 1455: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Put it this way... I cried when I got home. This has been an overwhelming few days. I've travelled from one end of the province to the other, celebrated my dad's birthday, went to a wine tasting event, had a specialized hearing test done in the City, went to a family funeral, and came home to a huge mess.

I can't move stuff back into my office until the underlay is replaced. I'm hoping they will also clean walls, repair drywall and paint. They'll assess in the morning.

My grandson came over and he helped me set up my computer on the kitchen table. Thankfully it works. I'm cheering over that! It will have to be a temporary workspace for now.

He also helped me move things around enough that I can sit down on the couch and get into my kitchen. We've started the purge. I had a printer and some other things that Ty hauled out to the dumpster when he left.

It will all work out, it's just going to take some time for the repairs. It's funny, the things one can be grateful for. I can make a cup of coffee in the morning. Yeah!! For a while, it looked like I wouldn't even be able to get a coffee cup out of the cupboard. Oh, and the flowers I bought for Easter are still fresh and cheering up the place. LOL!

I'll feel much better after I've had a good sleep in my own bed.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments So sorry to hear that Janice. What an absolute pain. Not to mention completely exhausting. Glad your computer is fine and you can make coffee. Everything else can be dealt with tomorrow.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments So sorry Janice. I hope you feel better after a good night sleep.

message 1458: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Good to hear your family are rallying around to help Janice. As Peggy says, hopefully a god night sleep and a strong cup of coffee in the morning with make you feel a bit better.

My partner left the lights of our car on over night and the battery was flat this morning when he left for work. We're moored in the middle of nowhere so he's been waiting around for one of the other boaters to pop by. He normally leaves at 6.45am so he had to wait around for a bit. I think he got it sorted around 8.45am so he'll only be a couple of hours late to work. Oops!

message 1460: by Tasha (new)

Tasha That sounds like a lot of damage, Janice. Incredible. Glad you can still have your coffee and computer though!

message 1461: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Sounds like a mess, Janice. But I'm glad your computer is working, and that your grandson not only helped with the physical work, but was there to support you. Crying is ok. Some swear is fine too. You even should kick something if needed. :)

message 1462: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Swearing a lot I would think! ;)

message 1463: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments With coffee and a computer, you'll get your legs back under you, sorry it's been so overwhelming. I find when life just piles on, crying is a good way to set the balance. I would also recommend chocolate and wine!

I went out on my date last night, after getting cancelled this weekend. It was a great night. We both had worked long days, so it was low-key, just tacos and Coronas, but fun none-the-less. I think they'll be a few more in the future!

message 1464: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Glad to hear your date was a success Lynda. :-)

message 1465: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Thanks everyone. I do feel better this morning. The maintenance man is coming this morning to assess the damage. I might kick him (if kicking is needed). LOL! I found the work I need to do this morning and I'm good to go.

My blog just reached 5,000 visits in its 7 months of existence. I'm happy and surprised. I never thought someone would read it at all. I would drink a beer, but it's 10 in the morning.

That's great about your blog Sandra!

@Sarah, What about going to bed early? A good amount of sleep might help.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Cold black coffee works well with headavhes. Dont ask me why cold vs hot but cold works better

message 1476: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Why do hairdressers hardly ever do as you ask? I have just come back from having my hair cut and my hairdresser has cut it a lot shorter than I wanted. It was really long before (more than halfway down my back) and I asked her to cut it so it was just below the bottom of my shoulders. She has cut it a good few inches shorter than that, it's barely past the bottom of my neck. It's in good condition now and I know it will grow but why bother asking how much you want cut off if they just go ahead and do their own thing anyway?

message 1477: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Janice, I don't recommend kicking the maint. man, you might never get your repairs done if you make him angry! Stick to pillows or other soft objects for your kicking and hitting, nothing is worse that kicking the wall or something when your angry and injuring yourself in the process. Then you just end up pissed off with a throbbing toe on top of the anger and you feel worse instead of better.

Of all of the headache remedies I've tried over the years, cold black coffee is one I've never heard before. I'll have to keep that in mind for my next one...

Glad your date went well, Lynda! Do you have a second date planned yet, or is that too soon? I've never really been in the dating scene so I don't know what is appropriate or not.

Sounds like you've got a bad hairdresser to me Lisa. I'd move on and try and find a better one, once you do stick to them like glue.

I've now had the same hairdresser for years and I love her. Listens to exactly what I have to say and follows it.

Sorry you aren't happy with your haircut, Lisa. I think that is one of those age-old, unanswerable questions... like why is the sky blue, why does toast always land buttered side down, etc. lol

message 1481: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Don't worry, KimeyDiann. I didn't kick anyone. The maintenance man is doing everything he can to get me back up and running as fast as they can. But it will be a big job. They have to remove and replace drywall, replace the carpet underlay, and paint. The phone repair is here now trying to fix the phone jack which shorted out. Anyway, it looks like it's going to be a couple of weeks.

I don't suppose they will be putting you up in a hotel while they do all of the repairs? It sounds like a lot of messy, noisy work.

message 1484: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Janice I'm glad to hear that things are moving forward with three repairs. You'll truly enjoy it once it's finished and your home is settled again.

I'm with Lynn, find a different stylist. I'm actually waiting to get me hair cut right now. I've been with Celeste for years and she's never given me a bad cut, and my hair is a challenge and I like to do crazy things with it.

We don't have an exact time pinned down for a 2nd date, but there will be one. I did tell him he's taking me to see Captain America Civil War though!

message 1485: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments @Lynda: YAY for Your date! (it's a very encouraging thing (to me) to hear this days, dates work very good)
@Janice: Sorry to hear all the stress You have to put
@Lisa: I think when they have to cut the hair in some style or pattern, they must do it symmetrically, and this moment is when it began to go shorter, and then some moore this side, the other again, etc.

message 1486: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Well today is a new day so fingers crossed for my head. So far so good.

I've had some bad haircuts in the past too so I feel your pain Lisa. The comfort is that it will grow in no time at all. I get annoyed when they give me a style which needs minimal work doing to it to maintain it then when I get home I find that it is minimal to them but mammoth to me and I can't get it looking the same way again...ever! I've not had my hair cut in over a year now. It really does need doing as it's pretty scraggly at the ends. Because I am so infrequent with visits to the hairdressers I've not got a go to person so every time is a risk to see whether I get something or like or not.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Hi everyone! I have returned from the epic adventure.

One more day off today and then back to work tomorrow. I highlighted in the What you Reading thread that our housesitters managed to keep the birds alive (with my Mum sneaking them food/treats and head counting (she can't remember their names so it went "duck, red breast, flopsy comb, other one" apparently) once a week), but have caused me lots of washing (6 loads now done), cleaning, and washing up, and Lexx currently shopping for a new computer chair and a sofa replacement at some stage. And I can't get the Raspberry Pi to connect to the tv to play music from the house server due to lots of unpluggings.

Will keep you updated as we find more "surprises". Still great to be back, but had a fantastic trip.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Found out they were eating in our bedroom and spilt sticky stuff all over the chest of drawers (shut it, it was food, that's what I am telling myself), and my brother had a parcel delivered a few weeks ago, to which they not only didn't contact him (they had his number), they left it outside the whole time... jesus...

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Listening to a show with Piff the magic dragon. Finally I'm with him. About the thickest British accent I've heard but I can undersrand now. Took 10 minutes. Its like a thick Jersey accent or Boston or Texas. Most of the US sound the same but Texas, Massachusetts and Jersey are highly distinguishable and I struggle at first to understand them. Jersey is actually the hardest for me. not just Jersey but thick Jersey

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Our nephews. They are young, but still, I and Lexx housesat at the same age and there is no way we would have done most of the above. Maybe, if something went wrong, I wouldn't have made the bed (although the sheets would have been washed and on the line).

They are such good kids though... I'm just astounded.

Saw my brother tonight, and we gushed "Why did you get a girlfriend (while she was standing there) and a house?! We miss you!!"

message 1498: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments And my laundry light has been left on for god knows how long and has blown. There are spare bulbs in the house (marked for them) but they didn't bother... argh.

message 1499: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I feel bad for the mess you're having to deal with, Rusalka. It's no fun coming home to a mess like that.

message 1500: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments ... It's not that bad. I am more irritated and annoyed than anything. I have a roof and a floor. All my appliances work. My bed is functional (now it has new sheets but that's a first world problem). My computers work. All my books and DVDs and things are here. My pets are alive.

It's little petty things... there are just so many of them!!! lol
