Joan I know this is random but does anyone know a song with a line about "you can phone it in" or something similar?

I googled the lyrics and the results had this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dolHX...

"I Like it Heavy" must not have been a big hit, I haven't heard it maybe once since then. "Mayhem" is getting a lot of airtime though.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments The music community in my little corner of the world is suffering a tragedy. The bassist of a local 80's cover band (The Velcro Pygmies) and his brother went missing while fishing on the Tennessee River Friday. Their boat was found, but rescuers still have not found them. Searchers with rescue dogs believed that they had located where they were in the river Saturday, but it is too close to the dam for divers to reach safely. TVA (the local power authority that controls the dams) agreed to turn off the dams for a few hours so a specialized team of divers that are trained in high-risk extractions could search. They were not able to locate them yesterday so they are searching again today while TVA powers down the dams again. So far they haven't had any luck today either. It is such a heartbreaking situation.

message 1156: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments KimeyDiann - do you think they went over the dam and/or got sucked down at the dam? I'm sorry these guys are evidently gone. Sad news.

We have a pretty mild river nearby Austin that is spring fed, but it can get spicy, especially after some good rains. Then you have to beware. You can go over the dam and the water can sometimes catch people and pin them down.

Most people go thru just fine, but a very few are caught and can't get up and they drown. With an audience usually of several dozens of people.

Nature is quite a force to be contended with. I'm just saying.

message 1158: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Sad news. I rarely see people go missing in any body of water that ends well. Worst part is with moving water they coukd end up anywhere and could be 10-20 years down the road bones wash up amd they identify them. Not to be pessimistic it just what I've seen around here.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments FYI to US rockers linkin park debut hybrid theory is free at google playstore til march 18. Man I forgot how awesome that album was. And I haven't cared for much linkin park since actually

message 1161: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm the same Travis. Loved that album, not listened to them since.

On a different subject, I'm off on an evening class tonight to make sourdough bread. Exciting!

message 1162: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Still no news on the missing brothers. I can't imagine anyone going through this dam and surviving. I don't know exactly where they are searching, but they believed the bodies are somewhere in close proximity to the dam. The family and friends are gathering on the upper side of it at a park and boat ramp, but I don't know which side they believe they are.

(A couple of quickly found google images of the Dam, http://helenkellerhealth.com/wp-conte...
http://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townne...)

Despite the horrible situation, it has been heartwarming seeing the outpouring of love that is coming from all across the country for these young men and their families and friends. I have no idea what will happen to the band after this tragedy. Jacob, the bassist, is not an original member of the band which has been around since probably before he was born. I've only ever seen the band with him playing bass and he was great. The Velcro Pymies are such a fun band to watch. I'm not even a huge fan of 80's music, but I never miss a show if they are playing somewhere close by since I saw them the first time a couple of years ago.

That's rough! I would think hearing loss would be an occupational hazard especially since they've been in the business since the early 70's.

Sarah | 18550 comments I went on my sourdough course last night and it was fantastic. We learnt how to make a dough with a starter, some of the science behind it which will help me if things don't go right with it and (hopefully) know how to correct it. We also had a taste of some of the bread with some freshly made wild garlic pesto and black olive and caper tapenade and a wonderful beetroot, feta and butternut squash salad. It was all scrummy and I have the recipes to be able to do it all at home. My breath is a little garlicky this morning though. I went home with a sourdough starter, some dough proving in a basket ready to cook. I'm excited to get baking :-) Now tonight I have my Chinese cooking class.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I wasn't feeling too good when I went to bed last night and I have woken up this morning with full blown flu! I have a really high temperature, awful headache, sore throat which is so bad I have almost lost my voice, a cough, aches all in my arms, legs and back and I have lost my appetite. Think I will be spending the day in bed!

message 1173: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Sorry to hear that Lisa. Keep yourself wrapped up. Just as well your boiler was fixed aye?! Hot toddies all the way! I hope you feel better soon. I have had nausea since I woke up and a muddly head so I think I'm getting a migraine. Came to work anyway but then 2 of my clients cancelled. Let's hope the other 2 turn up.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments The garlic breath means your immune system is going gangbusters, Sarah. Sounds like a great course! Boo for no shows, hope you head pulls through.

Agree on the bar on the side. But hope you have fun with it now you know it's there, Sandra.

Hope you're feeling better, Lisa. Bed, tea, books, sleep, hot toddies. Is your hand feeling better?

Never really liked Acca Dacca. So I'll call them soft ;) They are too prolific, and I just think there are so many better Aussie bands that got shoved in their shadow. Wouldn't wish hearing loss on any one though, so it's a bit crappy.

Sorry I've been a bit AWOL. Work is insane. I have 5 hours left before I go on a months leave. The whole university's network and systems have been unstable for over a week, which has made working so much harder and put me behind. But I just have to walk out the door at 3.30pm tomorrow and leave it. It's a bit crap, but I don't know what else I can do. So with that, and brother's wedding on Friday, and leaving first thing Sunday, and packing, I've been absent. I still love you all though.

message 1175: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Oh no, Lisa!!! Hope your hand is feeling better though so it's one less thing you have to deal with. We are having the flu run through this area as well. My daughter was the only one in the house to get it though, thankfully. I hope you recover quickly.

Have a great trip, rusalka! It's hard to leave before a trip when you have so much to be responsible for, isn't it?!

I hope you have a great trip, Rusalka!

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Hope you feel better, Lisa and Sarah. The flu is going around pretty bad here too. One person in my office has it and several people have family members with it. I've been keeping a bottle of my immunity boosting essential oils with me to use throughout the day so hopefully I don't catch it. But in typing that I just realized I left my bottle at home this morning. Boo.

I'm really surprised there are not more musicians with hearing loss. Especially the bands that have been around as long ACDC and some of the others have.

I used to make sourdough bread all the time, kept a culture brewing at the back of the stove. Once you make your own bread from it, you'll never go back to store purchased sourdough bread. It's not authentic. Rather, they add a "flavour" to replicate sourdough and you can tell.

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments Feel better soon, Lisa! You're sure having a time of it lately!

message 1185: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes they told us on the course that a lot of sourdough in shops isn't actually sourdough. What I tried last night was definitely the best sourdough bread I've tasted.

message 1187: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I have the new GR navigation bar since yesterday. I liked the previous one better. It's not so different in functionality. The same things are there, arranged a little different. I think they are giving more importance to the "GR recommendations" feature. This is useless IMO. As far as I know, only a few people pay attention to this feature. Most of us are interested in recommendations from friends and other people we interact with, and know and trust their taste in books. There's something really wrong with this feature. I have all the times things like "Since you read A, we recommend B", but I rated A 2 stars! Seriously?
I like to open my new notifications in a different tab for each thread, and this is being more difficult to do, since they disappear when I click. Annoying.
And the visual part, I don't like that everything looks more "square" now. The previous one had a more "rounded" layout.

message 1188: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I don't have the new navigation bar yet though I did test it out through the Goodreads Feedback group. There were some good things about it, one being that it scrolls with you. Now, I'll be able to open a new tab (say I want to go to "my books") without losing my place in the thread. Currently, I have to scroll to the top of the page, Ctl Click on whatever link I want, and then find my way back to where I left off in the thread.

The other thing I liked too was that "New Releases" is much easier to find. I could never find it other than through the email.

I don't know that it's all that esthetically pleasing, but, like all their other icky changes, I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I don't use notifications all that much. Normally, I just browse through the "Unread folder" for new postings. I'll see how the new bar affects the notifications I do utilize once I get it.

message 1189: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments All the things I don't like, I know I'll get used to. The notifications is the only thing I wish they fix. I checked and it seems that more people complained and they are talking a look at it.
Another thing I suggested in the blog comments is the notifications refresh by themselves, and not only when the page is reload. It would be cool, at leas for we who use the notifications button. :)

message 1190: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I noticed some new stuff today too. I have the same with the recommendation tool Sandra, and not just since today. Recommendations for books I rated 2 stars just because I read them, but also recommendations so general they don't make sense. 'Because you read book A in fiction, here is other fiction you might like'.

The first iced tea I ever had was like that. My aunt brewed regular tea, added sugar to it, poured it (cooled) into a jar and then into the fridge. Unsweetened wouldn't be all that tasty, even though I drink hot tea with no sugar.

Janice,
thanks for that - I was meeting an friend who used to lip-synch to that song but sung by Jackie Moore for "Air-Band" competitions when we were in college. I set my phone to play the youtube recording just as I was meeting her.

I'm trying it out as an experiment because my gut is messed up. Hoping for some good results. Willing to see what happens.
