Stephanie That's so scary, TJ! Do they have any leads? Please don't walk around by yourself, or please carry something you can defend yourself with, (dog, pepper spray). Hope the perp is caught soon!

That is terrifying, TJ. If you don't have pepper spray or something, you should definitely get some! My husband was actually telling me just last week that I need to get pepper spray or a taser to keep in my car. It came up after some friends (a mother and her 12 y/o daughter) had a scary encounter recently with a man trying to get into their car while they were at a stop sign.

Even though it is legal for women to conceal-carry a gun in my state, I'm not comfortable enough around guns to carry one and I really don't think I could use one if the situation did present itself. A taser or pepper spray, absolutely.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I've never understood the art of rape nor have I wanted to understand it

message 855: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Crazy you guys can carry pepper spray and tasers. Pretty sure that's illegal here. Only thing we've got to defend ourselves with is our fists (and keys). We can carry a rape alarm should we wish but they're pointless. I used to have one in my teens but not now. And I'm kind of pleased we don't have things like that on the streets because they'd be used by bad people on good people too and not just as a defensive thing. Now a dog? That's the route I'm taking! I walk around in the dark a lot, along towpaths and in the middle of nowhere. Generally i don't worry about it but on occasions I'll get a bee in my bonnet and i just can't shake the feeling of someone jumping out on me and i get all wound up. I'd feel safer with a dog. Even if it was soft as s**t and wouldn't hurt a fly.

I never know what's going on locally as i don't read the local news papers and because we move around. I think it's better that way.

message 857: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have really hurt my left hand but have no idea what I have done. As I was getting out of bed the other day, I got this awful burning/ripping pain on the top of my hand by the knuckles. Since then, the burning pain comes and goes but when it's there, my ring finger and pinkie seize up and I can't really move them until the pain stops. The rest of the time, the top of my hand alternates between aching or feeling completely numb. It's numb right now, I have just poked it with my fingernail and didn't feel a thing. I just tried to make an appointment to see a doctor and there are none available until the end of next week which is bloody annoying! I'm wondering whether to strap my hand up in a bandage and seeing if that helps.

Stephanie Hope your hand feels better soon, Lisa :)

message 863: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Tiger balm, Lisa? I get pains in my back sometimes that feel like a burning, hot knife stabbing into my back. Heat helps. So maybe it will help your hand. Hope the doc has more ideas!

We do but our local one is next to useless tbh. My mum went down there a few months ago after a fall with chest and back pain and was waiting to be seen for hours and then they just sent her away with a few painkillers. Didn't take any X-rays or anything, just said she was bruised. She was only with the doctor for about 5 minutes. Turned out she had two broken ribs and had slipped a disc in her back!

message 867: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee @Sarah Wish we have such winter ! My sister said "we opened the AC at work" can you imagine? Summer is already here .. No winter this year also I guess.

@J'smom That sounds like a nice idea for your father to do! I wish I could go through my grandma's things, but I guess my mom and aunt's got rid of 'em long ago when she was sick! And after the funeral they only inherited what was valuable. But still, going through old stuff would be a great idea.

@Lisa Ooh Lisa that sounds awful !
I won't recommend using a bandage, since you dunno what the cause of the pain, then it might only make it worse.
Try to use ice packs and massage it softly with heated -not boiled- olive oil.
Hope you feel better soon.

I know, it's ridiculous! It's getting harder and harder to see a doctor these days. Our surgery does release a few extra appointments each day but you have to be on the phone at 8:30 in the morning and most of the time you can't get through and when you eventually do, they are all gone!

message 876: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Lisa, sounds like it's nerve related. I'd ring the doctor again and tell them you have loss of sensation in your hand and in a lot of pain, they might see you sooner. Doctors are full up with people going for colds, if they know you're going for something different, theymight squeeze you in. The NHS walk ins can vary so much depending on day and time you arrive. I've had good and bad experiences. St Marks Hospital in Maidenhead has a minor injury unit i think is walk in and they do have xray facilities i think. I know it's not too far from you so might be worth checking out. Look online first.

message 877: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Sarah and Rusalka.... you can't even carry pepper spray?! That is not normal. Maybe you should start carrying a cane when you are out walking alone. Or at the very least take a self defense class.

@Rus, no saw blades, she mostly kept paper. We have filled more garbage bags with useless paperwork than I can even remember. Clothes that date back to the 1960's. Empty medicine bottles, I know there were probably 100 of those. Most everything she hoarded was junk that was useless.

@Lisa, hope your hand gets to feeling better soon!

message 878: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Lisa, I wonder if you didn't pinch a nerve when you were crawling out of bed. I hope you get seen for it soon.

Here, my doctor's office will only book appointments for the upcoming two weeks. Often I'll phone and they'll say, "The next available appointment is March 3 (using today's date for the example) but we can only book up to 2 weeks in advance. Call back tomorrow morning to book the March 3 appointment. And the next day it's the same response.

Within the last year, they started keeping 3 appointments open - like your surgery, Lisa. They call them "same day appointment". You have to call at precisely 8:30 and within 2 or 3 minutes they are gone.

But, we can go to the emergency department at the hospital, and there are several walk-in clinics. Some people without their own family doctors use the walk-in clinics exclusively.

message 879: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Never pepper spray. I'm pretty sure. I'll check in a mo. I've never seen it for sale. I've done karate (only a purple belt though) so I feel I could give defending myself a go if need be.

message 880: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments As I thought. it's illegal to carry a weapon of any kind even for self defence as it shows intent of use. This includes anything that releases noxious gas or liquid. Police have pepper spray but we can't use it.

message 881: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Same here Sarah, also not allowed. You could carry deodorant as an alternative maybe, spraying that straight into someone's eyes might also chase them away. Or at least give you some time to run.

message 882: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I just googled, and pepper spray is considered a prohibited weapon in Canada. We can't carry anything concealed. We can carry knives as long as they aren't concealed - baseball bats, hockey sticks. Best recommended weapon is a dog.

message 883: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee LOL you guys are hilarious .. Great advices you got there Lisa :P

message 884: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments The pepper spray restrictions are so interesting to me. I guess growing up in the Southern United States where guns are in more households than not, I've never thought about pepperspray being a restricted weapon. Besides, you can buy little cans of it almost everywhere.

This is a topic I should really be more knowledgeable about, but I've never taken the time to research. Gun control is a hot topic in the US right now. Those of you that live in countries where all weapons are restricted, is the crime rate really lower? Do you feel safer? I've always leaned toward the notion that criminals are going to find ways to get weapons regardless of what the laws say.

And on the subject of pepper spray. Janice, are there bears in the wilderness in Canada? I assume there are, but we all know what assuming does. LOL. I know people that go hiking or camping in the parts of the USA that have bears, they are encouraged to carry pepper spray incase of a dangerous encounter with one. I may be making this up but it seems like I remember reading once that pepper spray was originally created for hikers in bear country.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Mace is illegal but pepper spray is fine. If theyre out od it at the drug atore yeah just go to a gander mountain or cabelas or sonething ahould be right in like the first aid section or something. My wife clips it right to her running clothes. Although she is in the process of getting her pistol permit ao I'll b ibterestwd if she starta strapping when she runs or what her thought is. She goes because we are married we can have joint ownership of your pistols so Iwill have to put them on my pwrmit. I was like we will discuss this later. I don't know if I want to share my pistols. Tou go buy your own. But then I know I'll be like hey let me ahoot your oistol and she'll be like go bugger yourself you selfish prick ypu wouldn't share yours. Damn. I will have to do joint custody.

message 886: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think when I was in the northwest of the US and we hiked in bear territory, there were precautions you could take but I don't remember pepper spray.

Regarding guns I really think opinion is largely formed based on what you're used to. I really can't imagine feeling safe when people around me carry guns, and the idea that there are places where anyone can just get a gun is beyond me.

I read today about eagles of death metal and their concert yesterday in bataclan in paris. The frontman said in an interview so many deaths could have been prevented if people were allowed to carry guns. Because 'people carrying guns don't get killed'. While actually I would say it would have been even worse, imagine someone shooting and dozens of people, in a dark room among hundreds of others, shooting back?

message 887: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Not sure about statistics by the way. I heard gun-crime rates are lower in countries without guns but I've also heard the other way around. Depending on whether the source is pro or con I guess ;-)

I generally don't feel unsafe here though. I don't like cycling home alone in the middle of the night, but I don't think a gun or pepperspray would change that.

message 888: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments No guns here in the UK. Farmers etc can have them to shoot pheasants and such but they must have a license. Tends to be shotguns and air rifles. Obviously guns make their way in to criminal hands regardless of it being against the law. There are shootings but very few and far between. Tends to be gang/drug related but those aren't on the same scale as gangs/drugs in the US. Obviously because of a higher population in London, that is where there is more crime. Of course we have crime but i don't think it's bad because we can't carry guns. I have never really felt unsafe at all. I've lived in some rough areas too. I grew up on a council estate and then when i lived in Nottingham (nick named Shotingham because of a spate of shootings a few years back), I lived in an area called the Meadows where there was often a lot of trouble. I still never felt unsafe and no one ever bothered me. I am so pleased we can't carry guns etc. I had my car vandalised and my purse stolen from my house and hikst living in the Meadows but having a gun or not would have made no difference in those situations. Personally i think if there were more guns on the street, there would be more crime. I would feel more fearful if i knew others were carrying guns. Not even our police carry guns, only a special armed squad i believe. Tasers have been trialled more recently.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments My husband visited Banff (Canada) a couple of years ago, and I remember him saying something about bears and pepper gas. They hiked in the state park and were encourage to bring pepper gas with them. I guess the gas was provided by the park authorities. I don't remember really.

message 891: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Hmm, I didn't know there was a difference between mace and pepper spray. I'm learning all kinds of interesting facts today!

I definitely agree it makes a difference on what you are used to. My dad was not a hunter thankfully, but he had guns in the house when I was growing up. I know he had one or two pistols. They were kept safely away from my sister and me and on the rare occasion he brought one out for target shooting, he stressed safety. He had several BB or pellet guns, but my sister and I were not allowed to touch even them without him beside us.

While I don't have a problem with people having guns, I do think there should be stricter guidelines before a person can get one. Safety classes, background checks, and a psychological evaluation. Too many mentally unstable people can get a gun with absolutely no checking. That is what scares me. Responsible, sane, law abiding people with guns, I see no problem.

I guarantee in my office of 30 or so people, I could go to the cars in the parking lot, purses at desks, and probably even inside a couple of the desks and find a minimum of 8-10 guns. I feel perfectly safe with this knowledge. But I would feel just as safe if I knew there were zero guns here.

Neither did I I just saw an ad to go see them at Turning Stone. I looked them up and I guess they just debuted at the grammys which I don't watch aince they are prejudice toward rock and metal.

I did take a listen to them they are quite good. Which I mean look at the members why wouldn't they be good. But with all the Johnny Depp fans in this group I thought it was really cook

Then I go why do they have Johnny Depp on stage. And I couldn't put a name to the face of Alice Cooper. So I clicked and was lije dang they are a good band with a stupid name. I still don't dig the vampire thing

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think it's named after something from the 60s or 70s. A bunch of famous musicians who were referred to as hollywood vampires, and I think alice cooper was one of them, so it's sort of a tribute name. At least that's what I thought but I'm going to wikipedia now to check.
