Stephanie Our forecast is a foot of snow between Friday AM and Saturday...I am not happy about this. I think the next place we live needs to not have snow :)

Stephanie @Rusalka I have never been there. Maybe someday :) I just need to get over my fear of long distance travel, in a plane, over water..

I dreamt about it last night and everything was a mess! Even this thread was nested and all over the place.

It's pretty sad when a person starts dreaming about Goodreads.

Have you ever seen her or Halestorm live? They put on a really great show!
I've only heard Lydia and Bloodfeather off of Highly Suspect's album. Love both songs.

It has been really cold where I am too. The temps have barely even gotten above freezing the last few days. Today and tomorrow is supposed to rain non-stop and then temps fall back below freezing Friday with snow and ice. The only good thing is the snow and ice shouldn't start until Friday night so hopefully most people will be off of the roads by then. The majority of people in this area don't know how to drive on slick roads so there are always lots of wrecks.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I haven't been too much here since I'm really busy. I have my two nephews staying with me (my sister in law's sons) for two weeks, and my sister is arriving tomorrow. That makes 13 people in this house ... I like when the family visits, but I'm right now kind of missing the "peace" of my routine. My reading time is being nonexistent, I'm stuck in the 2 books I'm suppose to be reading.

message 457: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I would go crazy Sandra! It's just the two of us and I already miss peace and quiet when people visit for a couple of hours.

message 458: by Tasha (new)

Tasha That's a lot of people in one house! I hope you get your 'peace' back soon. ;)

message 459: by Joan (new)

Joan maybe chance of snow here Friday night and already my fellow long islanders are stocking up on milk, bread and gas! I confess I am a lousy driver in the snow. I'm pretty bad in the dry too.

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Sarah - How many layers do you wear to get to work? I love cold weather, but I can't imagine cycling in it.

We have more snow forecast starting Friday night too. Hope it's not too bad when I get off work around 10:30. Now, besides all the milk and bread disappearing, the news is suggesting items that are good if you lose power. Since I haven't been to the grocery store in over a week, I hope they leave something for me. :)

Sarah | 18549 comments jaxnsmom wrote: "Sarah - How many layers do you wear to get to work? I love cold weather, but I can't imagine cycling in it."

I have thoroughly enjoyed the two days I've cycled. Whilst it's been cold, we've had lovely sunshine and everything looks pretty. I stopped lots along the way to take pictures. Clothing wise, I had two pairs of socks inside my big furry boots, two pairs of leggings, 3 tops, a jumper, my coat, scarf, hat and gloves. This was perfect to start with, then my fingers and toes got a bit cold and my face. But then after about a mile and a half I was starting to sweat. I daren't take any of my layers off but as I got closer I undid the zip on my coat. Then I had to strip off when I got on the train as it was so hot in there. We have another frost today but it's only a mild one.

message 462: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments For how long do you have to cycle Sarah?

It was about -3C here too, but I cycled in my normal clothes, no extras. Only a scarf and gloves that are a bit warmer than the ones I usually wear and earwarmers. I think I'm actually warmer on my bike than when walking.

In the weekend it's getting up to 10C again.

message 463: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments it was a 4.5 mile ride. I'm a bit out of practice and the terrain is bumpy so it was about 50 minutes.

message 464: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oh wow, you have a lot further to go than I do. I think I would wear extra layers too if I had to cycle for 50 minutes!

message 465: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Starting tonight we are under a winter storm watch where I live and just a few miles northeast of here is under a winter storm warning. I don't understand why, because the forecast doesn't show temps getting anywhere close to freezing. Back in the 1990's this area was hit really hard by an ice storm that none of the weather forecasters predicted. Ever since then I think they over predict severe winter weather to keep people from being caught so off guard again.

With that storm in the 90's, there was no prediction of any precipitation OR for temps to get that low. They missed on both counts. I remember waking up that morning to what I thought was the sound of gunshots. Not that unusual as there are a lot of hunters in the area. The sound was actually pine trees snapping in half due to the extreme amounts of ice coating them.

message 466: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie We are under a winter storm watch as well :( we are planning on staying home for the weekend. We are supposed to go to a hockey game on Sunday but if the roads are bad, I'm staying put.

Absolutely! I've been amazed learning about the different types of weather everyone in this group has... or that they don't have.

How long does it take the henna to dry? Did you do it yourself or did someone do it for you? You should totally share pics!

I know what you mean about the gas, Joan. I'm on the north shore and I passed gas stations that were packed. You'd think we were expecting another Sandy. But I must admit I take this as an opportunity to make a big pot of chicken soup.. Love the snow, from inside my house.

message 470: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee @KimeyDiann Ooh, I never thought there would be such a big difference .. I should google about weather storms sometime.

I put it myself, its just like fully covered the bottom of my foot with henna. Usually it would take 1 hour to dry then you can wash it out, but if you put a lot it'll take longer. I like to sleep in it, that way I'll know it'll be 100% dried, and it'll get darker.

I might take a picture some time later ..

message 471: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I braved the grocery store tonight and really lucked out. Someone was leaving so I got a space right up front. The check out lines were unbelievable but I found an express lane with only 3 people ahead of me. I got stuff to make chicken noodle soup (for Callie and I) and meatloaf, plus a few other things. People were going nuts stocking up on water and other basics. It was crazy watching new stock being put out and then being swarmed over. One employee kept bringing out loaves of bread for people in line who hadn't been able to get any. It reminded me of a baseball game with a vendor going around yelling "Bread, get your loaf of bread here. Come on, get your bread now." Those poor employees could barely keep up with demand.

I hope everyone in the storm's path stays safe and warm, with comfort food, preferred beverages, and good books!

message 474: by CFDeeDee (last edited Jan 22, 2016 02:01AM) (new)

CFDeeDee @J'smom That sounds horrible, like they would be starving to death if they didn't get any! Hope the storm gets by soon

@Cherie it is very good for the skin, not only for feet, you can use it for hands and dying the hair -if you like orange hair- I remember grandma having henna on her sole feet -am I using the right words here? Sole feet?- whenever her feet were hurting, and she would feel better when she wash it off hours later.

message 475: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Interesting that henna is good for the skin. I had wondered about it when I've seen people with their palms and soles of feet completely died from the henna. I understood the decorative purposes of it but I didn't realise it had other uses on the skin. I knew about it as an option for hair dying. I've had orange hair in the past. :-)

message 476: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Keep safe everyone under storm watch. Let's hope it's not as bad as they say. That's what tends to happen here anyway. I'm fascinated by panic buying. The coal boat came at the weekend and he had to practically stop at every boat along his route as everyone was stocking up on coal and wood for the cold snap. His trip probably took twice as long as it normally does and he had to restock with a van twice. I don't know about others along the canal but we bought twice the amount of stuff we normally buy just in case.

That would be awesome CFDeeDee. For most of us, henna isn't a part of our culture, and especially not on places like the bottom of our feet. Would be wonderful if you could take a photo now you've mentioned it and explain it to us.

I know it may seem silly, like a throw away comment, but to a lot of us, it's really interesting and we would like to know more!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Huh since we don't have much lined up for winter weather around here seems our snow removal guys are all headed south to where the money is. Too bad I use my stuff everyday I have more than enough equipment except it also feeds the cows. Bummer. Would make for an intersting trip though

message 480: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Funny thing is these storms in the south is basically just your average January afternoon around here, but we expect snow and know what to do with it up here

message 481: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Biggest oroblem with snow south is the simplr fact no one has tires designed for snow. I don't care if you know hiw to drive in snow or not if you have the wrong tires you are crashing. It's why when you buy a brand new car or truck you havr to put new tires on for winter car companies send vehicles with tread for best gas mileage and they always suck in snow. Even on trucks and suv',s the tires won't do jack in snow even an inch. Thats why theyre playing bumper cars in DC

message 482: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee @Sarah I've seen some of those who have cancer and lost their hair would decorate their head with it .. It looked so good. And I've seen some type that would change the hair into a brownish/reddish colour.

@Rusalka I agree, the culture does make a difference in understanding more about henna. Its not tattoo for sure, and there are red colour, black, and recently I've seen white too.
The red one is what I like most, the black and white are all chemical and could cause skin damage for a lot of people with sensitive skin.

message 483: by Tasha (last edited Jan 22, 2016 04:52AM) (new)

Tasha ...and every year the media calls these coming storms Snowcapolyse and everyone panics. These days people are generally plowed out by the next day or so. We are preparing the snow blower and things this morning but there's no panic going on here.

There was a thing going around FB about "how many books you will be able to read during the storm" and last I looked I was in the 3 book ring. I'll take that!

message 484: by Stephanie (new)

Exactly! Which is why it would be great to get more details. We don't really have henna at all in Australia for example unless you are part of some specific ethnic groups. I had no idea there were different colours. Be lovely of you to tell us more.

message 486: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @cfdee, I had no idea the henna had health benefits, I thought it was just decorative. That is fascinating to me.

@Travis, you are spot on. We get so little snow and ice in the south people don't know how to prepare beyond getting milk and bread lol. I don't think the weather is going to get overly bad here, but the roads are already really slick. I have a 45 mile commute to work and even though the roads are fine at my house, my boss told me to stay home because they will be getting really slick soon. That is one thing I love about where I work, they care about their employees.

To those of you in the line of the truly bad weather, stay safe and warm!

We have one of the Wal-Mart neighborhood markets that is being shut down in my town. I went there earlier today and stocked up on junk food at half price! I got some necessities too, but mostly just junk and stuff I've wanted to try but never wanted to spend money on in case I didn't like it. I spent $170 so I bought a LOT! lol. Why is it so easy to buy stuff just because it's on a really good sale?

I've never had Rumchatta before..I may have try it sometime :)
Blake and I went out for a stroll...hubby is listing some hockey cards on eBay :) Blake likes to roll around in snow piles but was too distracted with kiddos sledding and kids playing on the playground equipment. So far the snow here isn't too bad as long as you don't have to go anywhere in the car ;)
