Took the 2016 reading challenge, too. 36 in '16. But I wish we could use # of pages, as I've got some tomes on my TBR list!

I set my 2016 reading goal at 25, but hopefully I will read more...

message 12: by Juliette (last edited Jan 02, 2016 06:58AM) (new)

Juliette Finally reading Fates and Furies after two failed attempts. Third times a charm! Brilliant

message 13: by Amy (new)

Amy (amybf) | 144 comments Every year for the past four, I've made it a goal to pick a book that is 1,000 pages (or very close to it) and start reading it on Jan 1. In 2012, it was Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity. 2013 was The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys: An American Saga. 2014 was A Suitable Boy. And 2015 was War and Peace. For 2016, I've selected Les Misérables.

In addition, I just started How the Light Gets In. Because I need something that I can actually carry around with me on my commute. ;)

I, for the umpteenth time am trying this with [book:War and Peace
. The version I have this time seems as if it might be friendly enough for me to actually do it this time.

Also working on A Window Opens

message 19: by Linda (new)

Linda (yinya) | 14 comments I'm reading My Brilliant Friend, Wuthering Heights, and The Plantagenets: The Warrior Kings and Queens Who Made England. Never got around to Wuthering Heights, and I was in the mood for gothic. Also listening to Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt on audio, which was a unique and odd pick by a book club member. I used to read a lot of Anne Rice's vampire books, and have no idea what to expect from her religious reawakening phase.

Happy New Year!

So far it's been an excellent start to the new year reading-wise. I'm excited to start N.K. Jemisin's The Fifth Season next!

message 32: by Sue (new)

Sue | 415 comments Are you an Elvis fan? I am in LOVE with his book. I listened to the audio, narrated by the man himself, and it was the best 18 hours I ever spent in my car. He's such a smart, interesting, thoughtful guy and a fantastic writer. I hope he publishes those short stories he sprinkles through the book someday.

message 36: by Gerald (new)

Gerald Miller | 821 comments This has been the worst time for me either for listening or reading. Family troubles, work troubles technical troubles. When windows updates that always causes trouble with audio books and itunes. I decided to pick one book at a time from my own library and one simple kindle book . The my library books is Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons . I picked it because the author just had a birthday.

I have not. I don't really think about my next "Gigantic Book" until the end of the year. But I will put that on my list of potentials for 2017. Thanks! :)

message 38: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresaterrell) | 20 comments I just finished reading Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow. I'm still reeling...

message 39: by Anna (new)

Anna | 59 comments Just finished reading The last runaway by Tracey chevalier and have now started A man called Ove by fredrik Backman ... Enjoyed the last runaway but felt the characters were a bit flat ... Happy new year everyone :)

message 40: by Julie (new)

Julie M (woolyjooly) | 315 comments I finished Ravi Zacharias' 'Light in the Shadow of Jihad' written soon after 9-11 and timely again, as a Christian response/understanding to terroism in 2015. Highly recommend this author who is the only theologian I've ever been able to listen to.

message 41: by Anna (new)

Anna (ferritalelibrarian) | 8 comments I just finished the very interesting/amusing The Almost Nearly Perfect People: Behind the Myth of the Scandinavian Utopia by Michael Booth and am about to pick up Gratitude by Oliver Sacks.

But after that I've just got a big messy pile of things. I'm having one of those moments where there are too many things on my too read pile by my bed, a few of them I even read a chapter or two of, and I'm just feeling overwhelmed by them all.

message 42: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 42 comments Picked up Purity by Jonathan Franzen today, finding it more accessible than Freedom and The Corrections.

message 43: by Pam (new)

Pam Lauman | 99 comments I just finished Welcome to the World, Baby Girl by Fannie Flagg. Welcome to the World, Baby Girl! (Elmwood Springs, #1) by Fannie Flagg I love when the ending changes a book from a 3 star to a 4.5 star. Seems like a fluff book but discusses so many issues - love, greed, secrets, and friendship - that it could be a study of the human race! I liked it so much that I am immediately starting the next book in the Elmwood series, Standing in the Rainbow. I think I've read all her others but may need a refresher read!

message 44: by Sue (new)

Sue | 415 comments I was thinking I might skip this one (which is already sitting on my shelf next to the equally monstrous City on Fire), but I really did enjoy both The Corrections & Freedom, so maybe I'll dig in afterall.

Jillian wrote: "Picked up Purity by Jonathan Franzen today, finding it more accessible than Freedom and The Corrections."

message 45: by Sue (new)

Sue | 415 comments I'm slogging through The Past, which was gifted to me over the holidays. Way too much description - so very many different sorts of blades of grass, etc. - and not enough plot momentum, but I think I'll see it through before I give up on Ms. Hadley for good.

I'm (finally) listening to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, narrated by Simon Vance, and really enjoying it so far.

message 46: by Tania (new)

Tania (littlemissmagic) I'm listening to Obsidian

Reading The 5th Wave and also re-reading Shadow of Night before I read the Book of Life

Really enjoying all of them

I'm liking it so far! Only 100 pages in, but so far similar to Freedom so all is well :)
