What Are You Reading? 2016.1

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
and
I just started The Last Days of Rabbit Hayes

Now I'm moving on to one of the books I've borrowed from the library: The Plum Tree for the Geocaching Challenge (Germany), Rebecca for Book Group - One Word Titles, The Book of Lost Things for Geocaching Challenge (Italy), or maybe something with a number.

I also started the audio of American Gods Sunday, which is a dramatic reading. Aside from struggling to reconcile Ron Perlman's voice as that of a 28 year old man's, it does feel tonally quite different from what I'm used to with Gaiman. It doesn't have that quirky, British charm. It's a lot harder and at times pretty crass. Not that it's not good, I think it's just a matter of shifting my expectations a bit.

Before I jump into book 2, I'm going to read Dodger for the group read. Starting tomorrow.

Next is Rebecca for the group read, and I have high expectations :)

I'm currently reading 2 books:
.. Bird Box (by Josh Malerman)
that is my thrilling read, it's well-written & wonderfully creepy
.. Dept. of Speculation (by Jenny Offill)
this is my "out of the box" reading, so unique, light and delightful
:) soon going to start:
- A Little Life / H. Yanagihara (buddy read on here)
- Missoula: Rape And Justice System ... / J. Krakauer (buddy read on bookstagram)

We're all nosey folks here and love to goggle others' books and add them to our own tbr's. Could you link your books so that it's easy for everyone to look at the synopsis? All you need to do to link them is click on the link "add book/author" which is at the top of the comment box. It opens up a search window. If you are on the app on your phone, I don't think you can link.
Here's the links for the books you mentioned:
Bird Box
Dept. of Speculation
A Little Life
Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town

I'm reading something else for the group read as well, but I thought I'd point out that Moloka'i fits the theme too. :)

omg! ~ of course ...
I'm so sorry for not having thought of that myself :)
✯ thank you! for kindly taking care of the proper links.

You're right! I hadn't even realized. I'll still read Rebecca though :)

It might fit for the Series books tasks, Stephanie, but I am not sure where else. I guess you will have to read it and tell us. ^-^

I finished reading The Rosie Effect and really loved it. So many hilarious moments, and heartwarming, too. Hope there are more coming in the series.
Now I'm reading more humor from an author who specializes in funny and unique stories: Christopher Moore. I've read several of his books and enjoyed them all. The one I'm reading now is A Dirty Job. So far, there are two characters I was first introduced to in the Bloodsucking Fiends, A Love Story, series. I especially love seeing The Emperor of San Francisco and his 2 trustworthy canine companions back for more adventures.

In the meantime I am still plugging along on The Scorch Trials. It's on my nook and phone and I pick it up here and there. I might put a more concentrated effort into as the end of the month looks closer for now it's fine.
Today I am starting my second geocaching book for Chile which conveniently fits a cover requirement but also has to do with Chile! I thought that worked out nicely. It's called, I Lived on Butterfly Hill.

I Lived on Butterfly Hill looks good to me…thanks for that one:)
I always seem to have trouble with the trilogies. The first one is great, the second one meh, and the third or last is usually the worst for me.
The only one that I have loved all 3 and waiting to read the 4th is The Lunar Chronicles. The first one is Cinder
A few other really good YA books(at least the first ones, lol)
Unwind
Born
Delirium

Some of those have been on my list for awhile! I am working through a personal challenge/list the 50 States of YA fiction and the first Mara Dyer book was for Florida. I can never not finish a series so I gave the rest a go since the first book intrigued me.
And I have cracked Butterfly Hill open quite yet but I am sure to get some waiting room reading done at my dr.'s appointment today.

That's cool. Here are some ideas for books:
Kansas-Moon Over Manifest
Washington- The One and Only Ivan
North Carolina- Garden Spells
California- The Age of Miracles
Iowa- These Things Hidden

Caecilia, are you reading this for the toppler? If so, the toppler doesn't start until Feb 20th. We're just in the planning and organizing part of it just now. I'm sorry I didn't pick up on this when you first posted.

I assume, the character you talk about is the funny (rare) person at the pawn store?
I knew the author wouldn't renounce to the Emperor and dogs! (too popular characters)
Let me know how do you like the book, Debra!

Caecilia, are you reading this for the toppler? If so, the toppl...
:) so lovely. Thank you, Janice. No, no. The book I have considered for our "Toppler" reading is still, on my TBR pile.
After having finished my two books yesterday,
started today ...

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

I may have to add A Little Life to my TBR. I keep seeing it here on GR's.

thank you ~ that is so thoughtful of you.
and ..
.. I'm appr. 100 pages into ALL -&- loving it, already.
yes, the book is thick. and, heavy.
but so worth the time spent reading it :)

I am getting ready to read a book about the dinosaur war between Cope and Marsh for my geocache challenge too! Mine is called The Gilded Dinosaur by Mark Jaffe. It is pretty dense and big, 10"x7"x1.25". I won't be reading this in bed either.

Now I am reading two very different books for a religion challenge.
The first one is The Bonobo and the Atheist: In Search of Humanism Among the Primates by Frans de Waal. It is an interesting read by a known primatologist. Through DNA it is known that humans fall between chimps and bonobos. In studying the bonobo he sees morality without religion.(they are more sexually free than us, lol) BTW, he does not bash religion.
The second one is Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome: A Memoir of Humor and Healing by Reba Riley. This is about a young woman who was raised very strict Pentecostal. She had a strong faith but when she was in college she started getting sick whenever she entered the church. Flash forward to age 29. She has been on and off sick and there is no physical reason for it. She decides to find her path back to religion by going to 30 churches by the time she is 30. It's an interesting journey for her. I just wish in went into more detail about the religions she visited.

Lisa, I've almost put Everything, Everything in the TBR, but the romance angle put me off. I think if it's just, "Meh", I'll skip it. I will add PTCS, though. My family is full of pentecostals and SDA's, and I even worked in ministry for 13 years, but have found a different path to spiritual life than my family.

I will be getting that from my library next week. I need to clear my mind for that one.

Caecilia and myself are doing a buddy read of it. Feel free to join in with us if you want, Lisa.

I will do that as long as you are still reading it. Thank you. I think I may pick it up tomorrow as I will finish my current book tonight. Is there a place to go to discuss it?

If I had read these two series by the year each book was published, there would have been a good time-line to follow, since Moore (like Stephen King) likes to bring back favorite characters in seemingly unrelated books.

Haha! That would be great! :)

Some of my February reads were: The Book of Unknown Americans review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
A Small Place review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Two Sisters of Borneo review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... - love this series!
Waiting for Rebecca to become available to download from the library - surprisingly and not sure how I've gone through the years without reading it. Great that it's one of the February picks!
