That's a good quote, Joan. The first line in Anna Karenina is also one of my favorites. “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

Roz | 4544 comments I started The Girl in the Red Coat yesterday. I had been looking at the selections for the Goodreads Choice Awards and realized I haven't read many of them. Marked lots for my tbr.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finally finished Blue Moon Rising. It seemed to take forever.

I started The Lincoln Lawyer yesterday (paperback), Later today, I will start Thief's Magic on audiobook.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started The Secret Life of Bees, just for fun.

message 1756: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments I liked it, Peggy. I hope you too.

message 1757: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think I will :) I've been wanting to read it for a loooong time, don't know why I never got to it.

message 1759: by Lisa (last edited Nov 30, 2016 02:05AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished Captive Prince and gave it 4 stars. I'm now going to move straight on and read the next book in the trilogy, Prince's Gambit.

message 1760: by Sarah (last edited Dec 01, 2016 10:47AM) (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I am not enjoying my current book. I really want to abandon it. But it's the final book for my geocache challenge. I needed a book set in south Africa and there aren't many of them. Just had to read, in detail, an account of gang rape and strong violence. I'm well over half way which is something. I just want it to end. I hope the book picks up after this bit. Surely it can't get any worse.

message 1761: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments Sounds bad, Sarah. Fingerd crossed it will improve.

message 1762: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19223 comments That sounds awful, Sarah. Hope it gets better, if you're going to stick with it.

message 1764: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks guys. I have 40 pages left. I read a bit more on the train. I will push through.

message 1765: by Joan (new)

Joan Sarah - good luck, I hope the reading is speedy.
Is it gratuitous violence or essential for the story?
Cherie was just dealing with a similar issue in a book about Canada and Janice felt the violence was a key part of that history.

message 1766: by Tasha (new)

Tasha That sounds bad, Sarah. :(

message 1767: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments It all pretty horrible but I think it's key to the story. Unfortunately.

message 1769: by Joan (new)

Joan Suffering vicariously through Anna Karenina.
I had not realized how much pain the characters cause & endure, for 900 pages.

I think the movie version was enough for me! Good luck.

I feel your pain, Joan. I read it a few years ago and didn't like it at all.

message 1772: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Anna Karenina didn't cut it for me. While War and Peace was better after the 6 months it took to finish it I decided Tolstoy isn't for me

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Started Angelmaker. Confusing so far but looking at reviewz it appears standard to be confused for the first half.

I loved the book... and the pain too...

message 1775: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished two books yesterday:

The Magic Thief which was good, but I'm not sure I'm invested enough in it to continue the trilogy. There are two separate characters with two separate story lines. I'm not sure if they ever converge into one story.

The Lincoln Lawyer. This started out slow for me and then part way through the book, I was hooked. I finished it at 2:30 this morning.

I will start The Obsession on audiobook today, and I'm not sure about the print book. I have two books on order at the library that I would have preferred to start next. If they don't come in today, I may have to start the next on my list Half Broke Horses.

Does anyone know what the reading order is for the Harry Bosch and Mickie Haller books are? The 2nd book of the Mickie Haller book is also #14 in the Harry Bosch. Maybe I just need to plow through 13 books in the Harry Bosch before reading book 2 in Mickie Haller. Or maybe it doesn't really matter.

Can you tell me what you loved about it?

The wedding scene was too funny - I could just imagine the clueless bride and groom and their friends trying to set them straight,
but I had tears pouring down my face while reading the brother's death scene.

Joan Sarah wrote: "It all pretty horrible but I think it's key to the story. Unfortunately."

well sorry about the violence but I think it would be harder to read if it seemed extraneous.

message 1778: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I finished Secret Life of Bees, which I really enjoyed. Next is the second part of The Woman in White serial read, and then Words of Radiance, Part 2.

message 1779: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I haven't made it that far Janice but I am reading them in order starting with the first Bosch books. The first few books are a bit dated only in relation to tape recorders and technology then there is also a 2 book series tat #1 is its own and #2 fits in with Bosch. Ummm. #1 is...

message 1780: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Ah yes The Poet which I would read fairly early within the first couple Bosch books as he does reference the Poet at times. And I'm only on like #7 of Bosch

I own the first two Bosch books, so I'll just move on from there and pick up Mickie Haller whenever I get there. If I get there.

Like I said, I loved the pain too (I'm a "little" weird). But, for real, I loved the characters, so vividly portrayed that you suffer with them, like they are flesh and blood...

message 1784: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I'm reading Unteachable, because its colourful cover (for the Geo Ch, still)

message 1785: by Joan (new)

Joan Mariab, I know I sound heartless, but I was relieved with Anna Karenina's end. It really seemed like the best thing for her to do.

LOL! Don't be sorry...
But you must understand the russian passion (in the sense of suffering)

I liked W&P better as well.

Joan War & Peace is a bit intimidating for me.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments I liked Anna Karenina, but I admit it is very intense.

Same here, Lisa. It is intimidating.

message 1792: by Tasha (last edited Dec 05, 2016 04:42AM) (new)

Tasha It is long and it was intimidating at first but surprisingly, it read pretty easily! I felt less daunted while reading it than I thought I would. SOme parts were slower than others but overall it really was quite readable and really good. I would recommend starting it just to see how you feel about it, you might end up getting through it before you know it!

message 1793: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished my dire read Marabou Stork Nightmares which allowed me to complete the geocache challenge. I'm pleased I could plod through it. I think I forgot to say I started with The Woman in White for the serial buddy read and The Final Empire just because. I wanted to read something light and that I knew I'd enjoy after my last read and it will be a great way to end the year. If I can finish it in time! It is a bit of a chunkster.

I would like to know how do You like it, Sarah

message 1795: by Stephanie (last edited Dec 05, 2016 04:34PM) (new)

Stephanie I just finished reading The Promise (Elvis Cole, #16; Joe Pike, #5; Scott James & Maggie, #2) by Robert Crais . I rated it 3/5 because it didn't keep my attention. The story line was drawn out and it took me almost 2 months to get through. I was quite disappointed because I really liked Suspect (Scott James & Maggie, #1) by Robert Crais .

Exactly the way I saw it!

message 1797: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4544 comments I finished reading Salt to the Sea and gave it 4 stars. I knew nothing about the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff or Operation Hannibal.

message 1798: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments I really liked it too. Like you I was ignorant about the event. It is a great YA novel.

message 1799: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19223 comments Stephanie & Mariab - That is really disappointing that The Promise wasn't as good as Suspect. I added it to my TBR as soon as I finished Suspect and I was looking forward to reading it in the new year. I'll try to keep my expectations a bit lower for it.

Roz & Sandra - I felt the same way about Salt to the Sea. I thought it was a great story and interesting, as I knew nothing about it either.

message 1800: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie @Kristie..I think it is because there is just so much going on in The Promise. It jumps around between Scott and Maggie and then Elvis Cole and Jon Stone (I think his name was Jon Stone). Thank goodness the chapters were short cause I was like who am I reading about again. They are all working on the same crime and I think it would have been better if it would have been a straight story and not so many people's POV. I hope you enjoy it more than I did :) I really like Robert Crais as an author and I'm still planning on reading more of his books. I hope he writes another Scott and Maggie book!
