message 1657: by Mary Beth (new)

Mary Beth I am reading After the Storm After the Storm (Kate Burkholder, #7) by Linda Castillo . I just love this series and this book is so good!

message 1658: by Joan (new)

Joan I'm reading a murder mystery, "A Critique of Criminal Reason" and wishing I knew more about Immanuel Kant since he is central to the story.

message 1659: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Joan - is your book title a play on Kant's "Critique on Pure Reason"?

message 1660: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm reading A Year of Marvellous Ways for this month's group read.

message 1661: by Joan (new)

Joan Cheri, yes the title is a play on the title of Kant's work. It is a good mystery. I have the feeling that clues tie into Kant's philosophy but I am missing them because I don't know much about it.

I do not know much about it, only what I read yesterday when I looked him up. Is this your book? Critique of Criminal Reason (Hanno Stiffeniis, #1) by Michael Gregorio

message 1664: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished Caliban's War for the geocache. And now on to Big Little Lies for geocache and Sai King Recs group read. These 2 books couldn't be anymore different.

message 1665: by Joan (new)

Joan Cherie, yes that is the murder mystery, A Critique of Criminal Reason. I am enjoying it. A key point seems to be that humans see what we expect to see, and so sometimes we miss what is right in front of our noses.
Certainly a big problem in life & criminal investigation. I am half way through and have not figured out who is the murderer.

message 1667: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Big Little Lies and loved it! Such a fresh new approach to a mystery. It's satirical, snarky, and covers some pretty serious issues.

Next up on audiobook is The Black Country.

message 1668: by Joan (new)

Joan Janice
Thanks for the recommendation. Big Little Lies sounds good.

message 1669: by Joan (new)

Joan Janice thanks for the recommendation of Little Big Lies, it sounds good.

message 1670: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Enjoy The Black Country Janice. I really liked it. More than the first I seem to recall. I'm enjoying Big Little Lies too. I'm whizzing through it.

message 1671: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I have finished Hounded. I'm hesitant to read further in the Serie.
I don't know, but the book reminds me of computer games, (view spoiler)
So, I'm inclined to think that one book is enough. It was fairly entertained, but no awesome.

I added a comment to your review. I'm not thrilled with the narrator this time around. I don't recall disliking him the first time, but this time, he's so bland. I've bumped the speed up to 1.5x and that's helping.

The series is steeped in mythology, mostly Norse. I can't say that I got a computer games feel to it.

message 1674: by Joan (new)

Joan Mariab, my sister said the same thing about Hounded - and I thought nobody thinks like my sister :)

message 1675: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished A Year of Marvellous Ways for the group read. I wasn't overly impressed to be honest. I gave it 2 stars but my actual rating is 2.5.

I am now starting The Golem and the Djinni for a buddy read. I have really been looking forward to this :)

Mariab | 3059 comments Janice wrote: "The series is steeped in mythology, mostly Norse. I can't say that I got a computer games feel to it...."

I'm well aware of that (and I have read my good share of nordic mythology), but that is only the setting, and I have seen a lot of CG that plays with norse gods and demigods, and heroes.
A serie that I really liked was Daughter of Smoke & Bone, all three books are ... how should I say... like actually links in a chain. I get the feeling it was meant to be so. By other series I have the strong suspicion, the first book is more like a "balloon probe" and then they see how to go further (depending on the commercial success of the first one), but there is not a main plan from the beginning, not one with a solid story, at least.
In regard to the Hounded series, I think I would read the other books only if I run out of fantasy books (which I hope will never happen)

I've read the first book in that series and have the other two. I likely will need to reread the first one because I don't remember it.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments Sarah wrote: "Was it ok in the end Janice? The Black Country?"

Yes, I did enjoy it in spite of the narrator. The first part of the book was a bit of a blur. I felt I missed so much because it was so monotonous. I found myself drifting off. I finally did settle into it though. Thankfully the next book has a different narrator.

message 1686: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished my monthly challenge read, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and will start Up From the Grave. I'm determined to finish this series, and soon.

I hope it will be a good read. People seem to be on the fence about it.

message 1688: by Joan (new)

Joan Are there any philosophy students out there? My head is about explode from trying to understand Kant's Reasoning. I read a good murder mystery that used Kant as a key character - so I tried to read up on his philosophy. Yikes! I just don't get it.

message 1689: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments There is a site in internet, who you can find philosophy easy explain. I will post it when I find it (tomorrow)

message 1690: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My wife and I just finished Staked. I don't know if it was because I fon't normally listen to books in the car, or becaise the kids dvd player had a constant bavkground noise or maybe I dozed off here and there but I struggled to follow this particular installment. I think it was the changing POV without being told qhich character was currently speaking. It was audio and Atticus and Granuel voices are very aimilar. Owen we always knew.

I could understand not being able to tell which character was presented in the audio, Travis. It was a lot of switching back and forth. There were a couple of times in the book that I had to go back and check!

message 1693: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Ivory and Bone on Saturday. I was not going to read it yet, but I noticed it on the GR list for YA Fantasy, so I read it sooner. It was okay and I gave it 3 stars. I will probably read the next book, since this is a First-in-Series. The POV, the way the story was told was interesting, but it is definitely not in league with JA's pre-historic series debut.

message 1694: by Joan (new)

Joan I'm listening to Charleton Heston read a book on Jean Paul Sartre - great narration and a fascinating subject; it seems especially appropriate today :..(

message 1695: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Cool! I did not know that he did any audio recording.

Mariab | 3059 comments Joan wrote: "I'm listening to Charleton Heston read a book on Jean Paul Sartre - great narration and a fascinating subject; it seems especially appropriate today :..("

He was my favorite actor when I was a child, I was in love with him, saw all his movies... And then, as grown up, I heard him as orator in a sort of convention and wanted to cry... (until now I say to myself he's just become an old man and a bit dense... )

message 1697: by Joan (new)

Joan Charleton Heston's voice is great and he switches voices wonderfully. I don't think I have seen any of his movies - was he in westerns or fight movies?

message 1698: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Joan - re Charlton Heston.
He was an all around guy. He played Buffalow Bill Cody in The Pony Express. He played Moses in The Ten Commandments. He was Ben-Hur, in that movie classic. He played the circus manager in The Greatest Show on Earth, and is probably best known today for his role in the original Planet of the Apes movie, which I think is sad. He was the president of the Screen Actors Guild. I loved him madly when I was a teen.

message 1699: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments Ok. Here we go:
-Ben Hur (best movie Oscar that time, and one of the most elaborate chariots race sequence
-The Ten Commandments
-The Bible
- El Cid
- Planet of the Apes (His best film, I think)
-Secret of the Incas
- Marabunta (which I loved)
-The Big Country
- Touch of Evil
- The Agony and the Ecstasy
- Khartoum
- 55 Days at Peking
- Midway
- Julius Caesar
- Pony Express
- The Greatest Story Ever Told
- The Naked Jungle
- Antony and Cleopatra
- Soylent green
- The Four Musketeers
-Earthquake
and many others
I found this in Wikipedia (which I didn't know: "Heston was partially of Scottish descent, including from the Clan Fraser..." LOL. I see here many fans of "Outlander"

message 1700: by Joan (new)

Joan Mariab, thanks, I will definitely be watching The Agony and The Ecstasy (it's a great book) & The Four Musketeers (Swashbuckling!)
