Janice that is a big change to get use too. I am happy you are enjoying it.
I am looking forward to reading Broken Harbor. I hear that one is really good! How did you like that one.

message 1602: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I enjoyed Broken Harbor, Mary. It's as much a character study between the two police detectives as it is a mystery.

message 1603: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished (and enjoyed) The King's General. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am now starting Ghost Song

Prosenjit Paul (bangaloredbong) | 55 comments The Tom Rob Smith Trilogy - Child 44, Secret Speech and Agent 6. All are awesome, specially the first book of the trilogy.

message 1605: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I started Daughter of Smoke & Bone for my never ending quest for souvenirs in the Geochallenge. Later will I decide if I use it for "bone" or "mask"

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 340 comments I'm reading Contact.

message 1608: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I finished The Whip, but was a bit disappointed by it. Still rated it 3 stars though, here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 1609: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I listened to Kate Mulgrew read Joe Hill's NOS4A2 on my drive down and back to see my sister last week. I had to finish the last chapter and the comments from the author in my driveway when I got home. I was tired from driving but I did not want to get out of the car.
The story was fantastic but I cannot say enough about the incredible job Kate Mulgrew did with the narration. I really think she made the book a better story for it!

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished Ghost Song. I enjoyed it but not quite as much as I thought I was going to. I gave it 3 stars but my actual rating is 3.5. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am now starting His Bloody Project for the monthly challenge.

message 1611: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I just finished The Trespasser and gave it a resounding 5 stars. I want to sit here and savour my thoughts about the story. I want to know if and when Tana French is going to write another book in the series and which detective will be featured.

Next up is The Book of the Dead.

message 1612: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started All the Bright Places. It has a super high rating among my GR friends, so I have high expectations :)

She's earned a place as one of my favourite authors.

I just wish that I had kept track of all the detectives, especially the minor characters because they eventually become major characters, and then I could have remembered where I'd first met them. It would create a bigger picture of the murder squad.

Thanks for the tip, Janice. I have had that series on my TBR forever and keep meaning to start it. Now I'll be sure to pay attention to "minor" characters when I finally get to it.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments I like how the books in the series are written in a "net" more than in a "time line", so you can even read it in different order.
We were discussing this article in another group: http://bookriot.com/2016/10/06/tana-f...

I wonder how the author conceived the series in her mind. All the plots at the same time? I wonder specially because of all the hints about other books you find around the series.

message 1617: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I must focus on that series next year.

message 1618: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Thomas (fisheuropa) I just finished The Three-Body Problem. Pretty fascinating read. Curious what other people think of it. I liked seeing science fiction from a cultural and literary tradition outside of my own.

message 1619: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19223 comments I was thinking that too, Sarah.

I read it a month or so ago. I really liked it. I agree that the mix of science fiction and cultural detail was interesting. It has sparked my curiosity in Chinese scifi. I see there is a book of Chinese sf ehort stories coming out soon, translated by Ken Liu which should be interesting. I think it has a story from the author of Three Body in it.Invisible Planets: An Anthology of Contemporary Chinese SF in Translation

message 1621: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Thomas (fisheuropa) I'm going to add that to my pack-your-space-pants shelf. Thanks Sarah!

I'm really curious to read more stuff in translation. I studied Chinese is college, but this has renewed my interest. I read The Wolf Totem (Revised Edition) 狼图腾 in Chinese a couple years ago. I enjoyed it, but it was a serious stretch for me and took *forever* to read. I see that there is an English edition now. I might pick that up and see if that translation is any good. I feel like my days of reading Chinese books with a stack of dictionaries and a magnifying glass are mostly done.

I love the same of your sci-fi book shelf!

message 1623: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments Amanda, is amazing you can read in Chinese! My sister in law is studying Chinese.

message 1624: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Thomas (fisheuropa) Sarah, I feel like I'm really under-read in sci-fi. I might steal a few ideas from your list :)

Sandra, read is a bit of a misnomer... more like slog through with the help of several dictionaries and innumerable cups of coffee. I really like Chinese. It's fascinating and fun, but I don't have the time or patience to get really good at it. I'm excited that there are more books available in translation these days.

message 1625: by Sarah (new)

Now I want to reread them all. I read Faithful Place first so I don't remember much about the character's roles and interaction. The link suggest that you need to have Faithful Place fresh in your mind to pick up the nuances of Moran's character in The Trespasser.

message 1627: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Sahara for the all -continents sweep in the geocache challenge.

I'll start February for my real life book club.

I am now starting Cruel as the Grave which is also for the toppler.

message 1632: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Playing with Fire and am rather disturbed about the atrocities against the Italian Jews during WWII. The modern setting of the story which was the mystery, was a bit hokey.

Next up is No Way to Run: A Mother and Son Story of Surviving Abuse.

message 1633: by Sarah. B (new)

Sarah. B I have just picked up The Storyteller from the library. I chose it because I have never read a Jodi Picoult, but heard good things about her books.

message 1634: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments Enjoy, Sarah!

message 1635: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished No Way to Run: A Mother and Son Story of Surviving Abuse in one sitting. Devoured it so to speak.

Next up is Once Burned. Tomorrow, I start On the Jellicoe Road on audiobook. Both books are for the toppler.

message 1637: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments I finished The Imperfectionists for the month challenge, and also a buddy read in another group. It was better than I thought, and I rated it 4 stars. I'm starting today The Nest

message 1638: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished Cruel as the Grave and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas for the toppler. Both were 4 star reads for me.

I am now reading another toppler book, The Vanishment

message 1639: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The Book of the Dead yesterday and will start with Big Little Lies today once I finish work for the day. It's the group read for the SAI King Recommends group.

message 1640: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm reading Revenge of the Pieman, which is very short and I'm only reading to fill up some time before starting the group read and a buddy read.

message 1641: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Great to know, I'm on hold at the library. Debated on dropping my hold just this morning to make room for another book (I didn't drop it) so I'm glad now that I left it there! haha

message 1646: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm reading Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half the Story. Instantly I thought of this group as Jewel discusses Alaskans and their sourdough starters as such has been in discussion before. She says the starter in her house was of a piece of her grandfathers which was a piece of his fathers. The starter had been growing? for decades. No one knows who actually started the first batch that has passed to ao many people

Family heirloom? I guess in a way

message 1647: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments It's interesting to think that a starter could be kept alive indefinitely.

message 1648: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That's crazy. The starter I had went black and died after a few months :-( I need to get hold of another one (too lazy to get it started from scratch) then I can make some more bread. I bet their bread was pretty sour if the starter was that old! I'm curious what it was like.

message 1649: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments By the sounds of it Alaskans all have real old sourfmdough starters. Not much to do for entertainment in the barren lands but tend the starter I guess

message 1650: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Maybe barren is wrong. Remote wilds I'll say
