Sandra (sanlema) | 11286 comments I finished yesterday The Bonesetter's Daughter, which was a great read. My first novel by Amy Tan, but I will try more for sure.

I started The Lifeboat for the monthly theme. So far it is intriguing, and it looks like a fast read.

message 1452: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am starting The Lifeboat for this month's Group Read. I've had this on my TBR for a while so I am glad to be finally getting to it.

This is on my bottom 10 list for this year. I did not like the char or how it shifted from time periods. I had expected to love this book. It is of a type i usually enjoy

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments A shame it was so disappointing Renee.

I started Suite Française for the monthly challenge.

I fell in love with Ove by the end of the book. Such well written chars.

Enjoy Suite Francaise. It is a well written book about a bad time in this world's history.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments That's how I felt about Ove too, Renee. I really liked Parveneh as well. She had me chuckling a few times.

message 1459: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments Every char in the book was so well written. I feel they were real. Parveneh was the friend you always wished you could find.

message 1460: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I shall have to read it again some day. :)

Joan So what do you think of when someone says "summer"?
(from Stephen King's Different Seasons p391.

I realized my first thoughts were heat, humidity and yard work :(

Attitude adjusted courtesy of The Impalas "I Ran All The Way Home" and youtube.

Thank you Cherie for suggesting listening to the music mentioned in books.

Lilisa | 2770 comments I finished We Die Alone: A WWII Epic of Escape and Endurance - an amazing World War II non-fiction account. My thoughts: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 1466: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Lifeboat for this month's group read. It's the worst book I have read this year by far. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am now starting The Essex Serpent

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Lifeboat today too. I have not posted a review yet. It is not the worst thing I have read this year but definitely on my 2 star list.

message 1468: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments Finished My Last Continent: A Novel yesterday. I enjoyed it! Don't get many opportunities to read a fiction book set in Antartica Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 1470: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I just finished Last Rituals for the group read which i enjoyed. Now on to another group read over in SAI King recommends - Life or Death, plus it's a netgalley book for me to review.

message 1471: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Different Seasons for our buddy read. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption was by far my favourite novella of the set.

I've started One Grave at a Time. I'm determined to finish this series.

message 1473: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The Book of Human Skin on audiobook today.

While I was going to start The Exorcist next, I may have to rethink that. Scary Movies is ahead in the poll for the October group read. I may be jumping the gun if I start it now.

I think I'll start Between Two Fires. It's also a horror story but I don't think it's been made into a movie.

message 1474: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Good thinking on holding off on The Exorcist. It went on my list of scary movie books that i was looking at yesterday. It's a close call though in the poll.

message 1475: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11286 comments Just finished The Lifeboat for the wet theme, which was a disappointment, so I'm ready to move on to something else. I will start today Last Rituals or The Story of a New Name for the monthly challenge, not sure yet which one, and also I will give the middle grade novel Everton Miles Is Stranger Than Me: The Night Flyer's Handbook another chance. I tried last week but couldn't connect with it.

Yes, 7 votes for scary movies and 6 votes for old westerns.

message 1477: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished reading One Grave at a Time on ebook. I didn't enjoy that one as the previous books in the series. I hope it's not downhill from here.

I will be starting Sleeping with the Enemy: Coco Chanel, Nazi Agent today for my real life book club.

message 1478: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I gave up on Between Two Fires. I kept zoning out, so either the story wasn't doing it for me, or the narrator wasn't. Instead, I've started Murder as a Fine Art.

message 1480: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I think I'm going to give up on Sleeping with the Enemy: Coco Chanel, Nazi Agent. It's a bit of a slog. Instead, I'll move on to Last Rituals for the group read.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Murder as a Fine Art and enjoyed being transported to Victorian London.

I'll start The Exorcist tomorrow.

message 1489: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished Life or Death for the sai king recommends group read. I really liked it. I started reading The Darwin Elevator for the geocache but couldn't get in to it. Only read 10 pages. Another time perhaps. So on to Fool Moon instead. Just because.

message 1490: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am putting The Essex Serpent to one side for now. I think it's a case of "right book, wrong time". I am going to start Harvest for the geocache challenge instead.

message 1491: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments O think I've pretty much given up on the geocache challenge. I really haven't read much toward it this year and reading books to fit a vhallenge just hasn't appealed to me this year much. Unless I get some weird burst of insoiration but my heart isn't in it this year. Rather just randomly pivk up a book gor no reason

message 1492: by Tasha (last edited Sep 21, 2016 04:12AM) (new)

Tasha Sometimes that's the best way to read, Travis. I get so caught up in challenges but I'd love to just be able to pick up whatever I want when I want, it's just so hard. So, I'm sort of jealous! ;)

message 1493: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11286 comments I'm really behind with the geocache challenge. I get distracted easily. I still hope to finish it on time, though.

I get like that with challenges sometimes, Travis. I am still participating in the geocache challenge and hope to complete it before the end of the year but I haven't taken part in many of our monthly challenges this year.

message 1495: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19223 comments Sarah - I started The Darwin Elevator and put it aside also. I even purchased the audio, but still only got to chapter 11 (page 114). It's not a bad story, but I had difficulty getting engaged with it.

I'm not doing well with my geocache either. I'm still hoping I'm complete it, but we'll see. It completely depends how much time I'm able to focus on it in the next couple of months, which are looking to be pretty busy IRL.

message 1496: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I am starting to think that I might abandon geocache too. The books which fit, I don't feel like reading. It's a real pain. I will plod along with it but I don't think I'll even complete 4 sites at the moment.

message 1497: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I've been plugging every book I read into the geocache "slots" and it's surprising how quickly sites get read. So instead of planning, perhaps try that and see where it gets you.

I think about 1/3 of my books in the challenge have been slotted that way, Janice. Even when I had books planned for all of the tasks, if I read something not on the list, I always checked to see if it would fit somewhere. There have been a few books that I made myself finish, but not that many, and lots of them have been wonderful reads, that I never would have had any thought of looking at, except for the challenge.

Too bad about The Darwin Elevator Sarah and Kristie. I listened to all three books (twice). I loved it!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am really enjoying Letters from Skye.

message 1500: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I have struggled to find books for some sites in the Geo Ch, but I haven't settled for nothing I didn't like, I just kept trying.
My plan is to read the 4 sites (50% in the last book) and then make my own travelplan, reading only for souvenirs, that is, the third task in each site. I don't think I'm gonna finish the 'all sites' task, but I'm going to read as many as I can
