My daughter loved the first Brilliance book. She said the 2nd was not quite so good and I'm not sure if the 3 is out yet or not.
I have them on my iPod to listen to - if I ever get to them.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I've read the fist Brilliance book and have the second in my audible library.

Joan SUSAN thanks, that is the series I was thinking of.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished War Horse yesterday. I loved it and gave it 5 stars.

I am planning on picking up Voyager next, which I think will be the perfect book to beat the post toppler "blues". I am also using it for the geocaching challenge. I probably won't get a chance to start it until tomorrow but I can't wait!

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I managed to read 6 books for the toppler, and now it's back to finish off the ones I had on the go before the toppler -

Lost in Translation (Geocache read)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I woke with no power, or limited power this morning. There was juice coming through but not even to do anything but illuminate the clock in the microwave. I think a transformer blew. While I waited for the power to be restored, I finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and had a wee cry to myself.

I will start The Library at Mount Char a bit later today.

Sarah | 18550 comments I will be looking forward to hearing what you think of the book Janice. I really want to read it but I'm going to have to miss out. It's looking like it might win the group read. No libraries have it here near me, nor on ebook/audio for loan and it's still £10 to buy. It's one of those books with a lot of hype which could be amazing or crap and i don't want to waste £10 to see.

Roz | 4547 comments I'm listening to,All the Light We Cannot See narrated by Zach Appleman. Love his voice.

message 1172: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I have been listening to Davina Porter narrate The Miniaturist for the last week. I found the group read thread from last year and started reading spoilers until I read one too many. I realized that I was not paying enough attention at the beginning and need to go back and re-listen. (I may even have dosed off once or twice because it was hard figure out what was going on. ) I need to finish listening to Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship with a Remarkable Man, I think I am half way through it. Roz - Shatner does get a little more animated in the middle, but you are right about how slow and non appealing he sounds in the beginning. Their work history and early acting info was fascinating though, especially Nimoy's. I am picking up my library copy of Women of the Silk tonight and started reading Ruby Holler, both for my Geo challenge.

True to all the reviews I've seen, the book is very different. I'm only a couple of hours in.

Kimberly | 2033 comments Been months since I posted but I'm currently re-reading Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander, #2) by Diana Gabaldon for the 4th time on the side and Wolf's Head, Wolf's Heart (Firekeeper Saga, #2) by Jane Lindskold as my main read.

message 1175: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments Hey Kimberly! It's always great to see you posting. You must really love the Outlander series to be reading it for the fourth time.

message 1176: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 2033 comments Thanks Janice. I'm hoping to re-join the Goodreads/blog worlds for good this time. I love the Outlander series. Every time I re-read I try to go one book further. So far the next one that I haven't read is Drums in Autumn which I'm hoping to read this go around. Who knows I might even just continue straight through.

message 1178: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Well dig lovers I have one for you. 1. If you love dog stories. 2. Must also enjoy a thriller because iy is a Dean Koontz but I wouldn't label it as horror just thriller and while it was fairly intense it won't give you nightmarea or anything. Watchers would be worth checking out. And 75% is just on the man and his golden retriever

message 1184: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I have recently finished all three books in the Silo series by Hugh Howey. Wool Omnibus sucked me in and left me wanting more at the end, but I was confused when I started Shift because it was very different. But after getting past the fact that it wasn't the same characters I had just gotten to know, I was completely enthralled. Dust brought the first two books together wonderfully. I found this world of the underground silos fascinating and would love to know more of what happens after that final chapter.

I have also just finished the The Covenant of Muirwood Series by Jeff Wheeler. It was a spinoff of his original Legends of Muirwood Series. It was really great as well, but I think the original series is my favorite of the two. His writing and world building is fantastic, but I don't think a person could start Covenant without first having read Legends, there is too much terminology and backstory that you would be confused by. I actually had to reread Legends because when I started Covenant, there was too much I didn't remember what was.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Lost in Translation, and consequently my geocache challenge last night. I've started The Illegal for my real life book club discusson on the 11th.

message 1187: by Joan (new)

Joan Does anyone know the title of a children's book about a girl who is blind, living with her grandfather in Andalusia, a waiting for her mother's return? It was published in the late 1960's.

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 340 comments I'm reading Anne of Ingleside

message 1189: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm reading In a Dark, Dark Wood and moving on with the Hecule Poirot series (thanks to our monthly read a couple of months back) and am reading The Murder on the Links.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11289 comments I finished The Summer Guest a few days ago. I think the writing was excellent, but the plot is not more than 2 stars. At the end I had the feeling that the author didn't dare to completely make up a story about Chekhov and his summers in Sumy. I wish she had been bold enough to do it. It made me want to read and reread Chekhov, so I've already got some of his plays and short stories.

I'm reading now My Brilliant Friend for my RL book club. So far so good. I hate the cover, though. :)

I'm also reading one story each day from How to Breathe Underwater. I'm liking some stories and disliking others. I envision it heading to a 3 stars rating. Let's see.

And my middle grade novel in the go is being Evie Brooks in Central Park Showdown

message 1191: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments finished Te Edge of Never for the Geo Ch.
It was only 11/2 star

message 1193: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I'm reading Beauty from Pain for the Geo Ch. So far it's not so convincing.
It is for Australia. I had another book in mind, but I couldn't get it and had to grab option Z.

I enjoyed this essay, maybe someone else will like it too.

message 1195: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The Library at Mount Char and The Illegal yesterday. So today, I start with a clean slate. I'll start A Symphony of Echoes on audiobook for the geocache challenge and Still Life With Murder for the monthly challenge.

Doesn't ring any bells, Joan. Sorry.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to the The Miniaturist, narrated by Davina Porter and Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship with a Remarkable Man narrated by William Shatner and started A Case of Need narrated by Nick Podehl, on my drive down and back from Grants Pass.

5 stars to Davina Porter and the book.
-1 star to Shatner and 4 for the book to make it 3 stars. I really wish I had bought the text instead of the audio book. It was hard to hear what he was saying sometimes. Many times, it sounded like he read until he was out of breath. It was well written and presented an amazing amount of information about Nimoy that I had no idea about. He really should have let someone else do the narration. The Michael Criichton book is great and I love the medical information. This is my first time listening to Nick Podehl, I think. He is very good. He reminds me of the Iron Druid narrator.

I finished Ruby Holler. Not one of my favorite Sharon Creech books. Nice story but strange flow. Like chapters were cut out.

I am reading Three Men in a Boat. Guys on a camping trip and Women of the Silk. Only 75 pages in. Easy to read. Set in China in the early 1900s and a good story about how silk is harvested from the silk worm cocoons and talk about long hours. The girls go to work at 5:30am and get off at 7:30 pm. 1/2 hour for lunch and a 15 minute break every 3 hours - unless they are behind quota.
