Welcome back Rusalka! Sorry to hear it's such a mess at home. :(

That's an ambitious goal, Rusalka! Best of luck not getting sucked into the Goodreads maelstrom of wonderfulness. Particularly if the alternative is house restoration, lol. I know I wouldn't be mature enough to close the laptop.
No, you win. At least mine is no permanent damage and just a few more washing loads than usual. They did break the sofa (the coating has peeled off most of the cushions) and Lexx's computer chair (it's at an odd angle), but nothing too dire.Yours is much more inconvenient, involves a whole room, and infrastructure works. Not to mention taken two rooms out of action in your apartment. You feel my pain but on a much higher level!!
Good grief, Russlka. These were friends of yours? I cannot imagine house sitting for someone and leaving it like that. How did they break the sofa and chair? Playing football in the house? Laundry is one thing, but not breaking the furniture. Thank goodness they managed to keep the chickens alive! They didn't know how to use the washer?
Oh, I forgot to say that I listened to The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis (twice - it was short) today.I had no idea what it was about, except that they were letters. What a shock when I first started listening! At least I can say that I have read it and I know who Screwtape and Wormwood are now. I didn't hate it but I am not sure I would have stayed with it, if I had to actually read the printed version. The narrator carried me (dragged me?) along. Ralph Cosham narrated a few of Lewis' books.
I am going to listen to We Bought a Zoo next.
Thanks everyone!Nephews, Cherie. Both 18, and wonderful boys, just a bit clueless. Lexx and I both housesat when we were that age and neither of us would have thought of leaving a house without washing up, washing sheets and towels, fixing things (I broke a chair once, and I felt guilty about it for months, even though I replaced it before I left). Ah well, part of growing up I guess. I also cheated and asked my Mum to pop in once a week to check on the birds, but she didn't come inside the house.
I've just discovered our entire entertainment system doesn't work anymore as they unplugged things to plug in their Xbox (apparently mine wasn't good enough). I've plugged back in everything I could, and can't get it to work. Will have to wait until Lexx gets back from his post-flight massage and buying a new computer chair.
Carol, I'm using you all as light relief in between jobs!! But, you have to laugh. And would I have not gone on holiday if I knew what i was coming back to? Nope, so worth it. Although Lexx is not buying them a case of beer as planned :P
... I just opened the dishwasher. They haven't run it since we left, and it's mouldy...Edit: I'm also going to take this convo to the Watcha Doin' thread.

Finished The Days of Abandonment
byElena FerranteMy review: www.goodreads.com/review/show/1600017524
I'm just starting This Census-Taker which is the new China Miéville novella and I'm excited about it. I managed to get it on ebook from the library which I'm really surprised at. It's not for any challenges (unless I can fit it in somewhere once I've started reading and know what it's about).

That is a downer. This is one of my most wanted to listen to books. I've heard such wonderful things about it. I want to listen to the full cast dramatization though and it can be difficult to find. It is always sold out on amazon when I look. I'll for sure hold out on reading/listening to it until I can find that version since you weren't impressed by the single narrator.
I finished The Ribs and Thigh Bones of Desire Saturday. I knew going in that it was going to be an emotional book since one of the main characters just lost his wife and child in a plane crash. It was supposed to be a book about healing and grief, with a semi-inappropriate relationship thrown in. The reviews I read all indicated that the taboo relationship isn't really what you think, and it isn't, but the book took some turns that I'm not entirely sure I was comfortable with. It was definitely a book that will stay with me. It dealt with so many hard and controversial topics, whether you loved it or hated it, I think it will be a book most people remember. I rated it 5 stars.
Must br not reading much goodreads says I'm 27 books vehind schedule. I finished and am almost finished with Royal Assassin and Assassin's Quest which I believe the combined audio time is like 70 hours so really that is like 12-15 average length books. I just been on yhe door stoppers
I am reading THREE SLEUTHS, 2 DOGS, 1 MURDER. It is a delightful story. I love the three sister sleuths. They are charming characters.

Actually - the single voice narrator was very good. I had no problem listening. I cannot imagine anything but a single voice because the only one talking is Screwtape.
You must mean The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. That one had the full cast (4 narrators) and it was wonderful!!!!
I hope
I felt that way too, Travis. The door stoppers really put a halt on the GR challenge progress. You will pick up with a bunch of shorter books. I am only two behind right now, but was at 11 for a while. It is hard to stop looking at it though. I almost wish it did not display the percent behind and just show how many you have finished.
Too bad about your book, Janice. Hope it gets better.I am listening to We Bought a Zoo by Benjamin Mee.
@Travis & Cherie, I wish the GR challenge could be set in books or pages according with the reader preferences. A moderator in another group told me this was suggested many times, but for some reason GR refuses to do it. I don't see the problem. It has to be really easy to do. Not different from choose between pages or % when updating your reading progress.
Travis of NNY wrote: "Must br not reading much goodreads says I'm 27 books vehind schedule. I would like to get to them but their size puts me off. The first one was much shorter.
Sarah I really didn't like the first book. The second was a little better. The third I enjoyed a lot more although there are quite a few similarities in that last book to the wheel of time. To take all 3 books as one story I feel it was over written with far too many pages devoted to minor details that really just didn't matter that much and after a slow slog the last couple hundred pages goes by fast. Too fast really. All wraps up nicely after such a long trek. My rstings probably will be 3, 3.5, 4. Respectively. It is a very high rated series though ao I'm kind of in the minority. Actually after that quick end I almost have a mind to go back to the first and drop it to 2.5 then 3 then 3.5. Either way I feel each book is .5 star better

Thanks Travis. We rated book 1 the same so I'm guessing I'll have a similar experience to you for the next two. Some day! A friend of mine has just finished reading every one of her books. She can't get enough. Whilst I think she's a talented author I'll never come close to fangirling on her stories.
I finished The Clockwork Scarab. I didn't enjoy it much at all, sadly. I gave it 2 stars.I am now going to start The Girl You Left Behind for this month's 'Girl in the Title' theme. I was going to read The Girl Who Couldn’t Read but this has been on my TBR for far longer. I haven't read anything by Jojo Moyes before but have heard a lot of good things about her so I am looking forward to this.

Nope, its The Screwtape Letters I'm thinking of. http://www.amazon.com/The-Screwtape-L...
The style and unique dark humor of The Screwtape Letters are retained in this full-cast dramatization, as is the original setting of London during World War II. The story is carried by the senior demon Screwtape played magnificently by award-winning actor Andy Serkis (“Gollum” in Lord of the Rings) as he shares correspondence to his apprentice demon Wormwood. All 31 letters lead into dramatic scenes, set in either Hell or the real world with humans―aka “the patient,” as the demons say―along with his circle of friends and family. This Radio Theatre release also stars Geoffrey Palmer (Tomorrow Never Dies), Laura Michelle Kelly (Sweeney Todd), Eileen Page (The Secret Garden), and other world-class actors.
Includes 10 new songs inspired by the classic book, four behind-the-scenes video documentary featurettes, and a 5.1 surround sound mix. Four CDs, approx. 4 hours total.
And coincidentally, it is actually available on amazon right now! But I have to stick to my budget this month so I can't buy it yet. :-|
Thanks for the update about the full cast drama, KimeyDiann. It sounds interesting. Maybe I will come on it sometime in the future. For now, it is behind me.
Sarina wrote: "I am reading THREE SLEUTHS, 2 DOGS, 1 MURDER. It is a delightful story. I love the three sister sleuths. They are charming characters."Sarina thanks I had not heard of that series - I'm looking forward to reading it as soon as it arrives.
I finished We Bought a Zoo today. Not sure I am all that interested in the movie. I did a video tour of the Dartmouth Zooilogical Park on-line and I think I am good. It was a fantastic accomplishment and they are still going strong, in Devon. Have any of the UK members visited the Park?
Cherie wrote: "I finished We Bought a Zoo today. Not sure I am all that interested in the movie. I did a video tour of the Dartmouth Zooilogical Park on-line and I think I am good. It was a fantast..."I have visited the Park but I was really young at the time so I don't remember it all that well.
I am having a bit of a reading slump again. I have picked up several books over the past couple of days, including The Girl You Left Behind, but I can't get into any of them. To try and get myself back on track, I have decided to reread As Meat Loves Salt. I only read it a few months ago but I loved it and as soon as I got to the end, I wanted to go straight back to the beginning and read it again. That didn't happen but now that I am in this slump, it feels like the perfect opportunity to revisit it.
My reading list consists of Grey by E.L James, and then The Rogue by Trudi Canavan. They are world's apart, but enjoy them both in their own way.
*Silly question - how do I make my letters bold so that I can highlight the books I'm reading. I see in everyone's posts that their books are bold, and it reads so much easier.
They aren't just bold they are a link you can click on to go to the book page. Very easy. Just above the comment box click on add book/author. Thing will pop up and type in the title and then look for the book you have. If it is a common title shared by a lot of books I type in the title and the authors last name so my book will be the first one. When you see your book click add and its all done for you
You can make the link Travis explains above, or any text, by putting < b> and < /b> around the text (minus the spaces, delete those). So if I was saying Hi Willow I have typed < b>Hi Willow< /b> without those spaces.
Or A Darker Shade of Magic is < b>A Darker Shade of Magic< /b>
Explaining that stuff is always too confusing for me Rusalka. I just end up with the end result and no directions
Enthralled by The Secret Life of Bletchley Park: The WWII Codebreaking Centre and the Men and Women Who Worked ThereI am only about 100 pages in but the story is great - history, human drama, a love story and excerpts from primary sources -
I enjoyed the movie Enigma but this book is even better.

years ago. When I was a teenager Mere Christianity seemed incredibly profound - but recently I was disappointed with What Christians Believe it seemed like simply legalistic polemics.

When I was a teenager my sister an I house sat for a cousin - and learned that if you use dishwashing-liquid in the dishwasher you will fill the house with bubbles, all the way down the hall, into the living room and out the door onto the deck! At least we left the floor clean.
I worked at a place where that happened frequently, Joan, although the guilty people never cleaned up, that was always lucky me. Now worries Travis. You explained linking books perfectly.
I am loving Amelia Peabody in The Last Camel Died at Noon. Dawn is right - this is the best one so far!
