I've done that too - bought the whole series without knowing I'll like the first book. It's a relief when you do like the first book. I'm about half way finished the second book and I hope I finish it before the toppler starts.

Stephanie I'm reading the latest James Patterson book Cross Justice. It is so good! I just love his books! They go so fast. The chapters are very short so reading 100 pages in a sitting is quite easy :)

I'm also reading A Good Man Gone. It is quite a cozy little murder mystery! It was a free book on Amazon for kindle! Sigh...another series for me ;)

That sounds very good.

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I am finishing up a couple of buddy reads and group challenges and then on to start a new one tomorrow.

I finished I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings which was very good. It is about a black woman growing up in segregated Arkansas in the 40's and 50's.

Then I finished Sworn to Silence which is a mystery set in Amish country. I liked it but the murderer was very predictable. No surprises for me.

Then for another buddy read I finished Anna and the French Kiss. Some YA books can be read and enjoyed by adults. This was not one of them.

I will read more of A Little Life before my new weekly challenge starts.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11283 comments Lisa wrote: "Some YA books can be read and enjoyed by adults. This was not one of them."

It's true. I read some YA from time to time, but what I read a lot is middle grade novels. The main reason is to share some thoughts with my kids, and know what they are reading, but to me honest, there are so many really good books for the age range. Of course I don't expect to be like reading an adult book, but they are good in their own level.

How old are your kids? My granddaughter is 11 and is part of Battle Of The Books at her school each year. They have some great books on their list.

Have you read Counting by 7s? It's a good one.

message 459: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11283 comments I have 8 kids from 17 months-old to 17 years-old.

My 13 years old son read Counting by 7s and loved it. I added it to my list because of his suggestion.
That's great about your granddaughter! Isn't it great when kids love to read?

message 460: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished my challenge read, Four Past Midnight. I'm going to start Magic Breaks tonight but will have to set it aside when the toppler starts.

message 463: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Before They Are Hanged last night and started Magic Breaks just so I had something to read last night. It will be set aside now for the toppler.

I'll be starting Lolita and Unsaid today for the toppler.

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I am in the middle of a reading challenge. I just finished:
Speak which is a YA book about a 13 year old girl who hides inside herself after being raped. It tells of her quiet 9th grade year in school as she is shunned by others without her being able to speak up and tell people what happened to her.

Last night I finished Infidel which is an amazing story of a very brave woman. My review:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Next up for me:
The Disappearing Girl about a girl who becomes anorexic

and
Never Let Me Go

message 467: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I just finished Cross Justice by James Patterson (sorry can't link since I'm on the app). So good!! I love the Alex Cross series and this book had me say, No Way!! You know you are really into the story, when you talk out loud ;)
Anyone else a James Patterson fan?

Jackie | 57 comments I'm starting Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie today. Had it on my list for a while, thought it was about time it got an airing!

message 472: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've been planning to read it for a while too Jackie. I have it planned now for one of the geocache challenge tasks, so I should get round to it this year.

I'm reading A Street Cat Named Bob: How One Man and His Cat Found Hope on the Streets for the toppler.

message 473: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11283 comments It has been in my TBR too, since I read Americanah. Actually it made the long list for next month challenge (star->sun), but I finally decided for other two options. I want to try another book by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie since Americanah was just a 3 stars to me.

message 474: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I read The Ballroom for the toppler and finished it yesterday. I gave it 4 stars.

I am now starting A Royal Affair which is for the toppler and my geocaching challenge.

That one has been on my list for a long time. Some day I will get to it:)

message 476: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I'm working on two books right now for my challenge:

The Book of Mormon Girl: Stories from an American Faith if it could just get past the Marie Osmond stage it would be better, lol.

and
A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

message 477: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19223 comments I'm reading All the Bright Places and Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain for the toppler. Both are good. I'm hoping to finish one today.

message 478: by Chandler (new)

Chandler Brett (chandlerbrett) Tad Williams' Shadowmarch series. He will be returning to Osten Ard (the Dragonbone Chair world) this year.

message 479: by Joan (new)

Joan has anyone read any CARL WEBER books? if so what was your reaction? I am reading The Man in 3B, good plot, good character development but the dialogue is very different for me. I can't figure out if it is accurate or exaggerated like a Raymond Chandler crime novel.

message 480: by Caecilia (last edited Feb 26, 2016 12:26AM) (new)

Caecilia Saori Joan - unfortunately, I haven't.

Have started Good On Paper by Rachel Cantor today morning.
It's totally my kind of book. crisp, sharp, to the point :-) let's see how the story will evolve ...

Is it like African American slang? The book looks good.

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I am now reading A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier.

So far it is very good but also very sad.

message 484: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm not reading anything right now. I finished my second toppler book A Street Cat Named Bob: How One Man and His Cat Found Hope on the Streets yesterday. I enjoyed it much more than I expected!

After that I needed a reading break, but tonight or tomorrow I'll start The Secret River for the geocache challenge. That will finish my first site :)

message 486: by Lisa (last edited Feb 27, 2016 03:07AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished A Royal Affair for the toppler and my geocaching challenge. It was a 2 star read for me. It was quite a short book at 250 pages but I had to really force myself to get through it. I was so glad to reach the end!

I am now starting 44 Scotland Street for the monthly challenge. I think I might be being a bit ambitious here seeing as February ends on Monday but I will give it a try.

message 487: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19223 comments I finished All the Bright Places for the toppler. It was a YA book, but very good. Focus on mental illness in teenagers, with some look into the stigma associated with it and labels.

I am going to try to finish Ready Player One for the monthly challenge over the next couple of days.

hopping to greener pastures now...

message 489: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Magic Breaks at 4:30 this morning. Good grief! When I started reading the book, I was wondering why I was reading this fluff, but once I got into the book, I couldn't put it down until it was finished.

Next up - I'm not sure. I've got Space for my geocache challenge, but it's a chunkster.

I'm also listening to Nefertiti's Heart for another group buddy read. I'm kind of on the fence about this one. It's more fluff.

message 490: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 336 comments I'm reading A Discovery of Witches hoping to finish before March.

I finished and enjoyed Butch Is a Noun for the Toppler dealing with gender Identity. I have found a few more on the subject I plan to read. Persistence: All Ways Butch and Femme will be up next.

I'm also starting Nefertiti's Heart for a buddy read

message 491: by Joan (new)

Joan Lisa, the dialogue in the Man in 3B is I guess African-American slang and I'm your a stereotypical Subaru-driving suburban Irish-american granny...so I felt a bit like a voyeur enjoying the book.

I have read quite a few Carl Weber books. They all made me think of soap operas but I enjoyed them.

Ha, ha…don't worry I moved from NY to the bible belt in NC and then TN. It took me years to understand the local dialect, lol.

message 494: by Tasha (last edited Feb 28, 2016 05:08AM) (new)

Tasha I'm listening to Rules of Civility and so far am really enjoying it. The audio narrator and the story are both good.

I'm reading Lunch in Paris: A Love Story, with Recipes for the geo challenge and I think those of you who are foodies out there would probably appreciate the few recipes she includes at the end of each chapter. Some good looking things!

message 495: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I decided to hold off on Space for now. I'm not in the mood for it, so downloaded At Grave's End from the library instead.

message 496: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I finally finished Dinosaur Summer by Greg Bear for the geocaching challenge (can't link the book since I'm on the app). This books was so boring that I had a hard time keeping my eyes open. So Peter goes on an adventure with his dad and some others to I guess an island of dinosaurs is what I got from this book. This story was over the top boring and just was not my cup of tea unfortunately. But hey! At least I know that I'm not into that kind of book :) and won't waste my time on another book like it :)

Stephanie - sounds like a mashup of Curious George and the Dinosaur by Margret Rey and Jurassic Park (Jurassic Park, #1) by Michael Crichton

message 498: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Yes, Joan :) spot on!!

message 499: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished At Grave's End and Nefertiti's Heart today.

I'll start Space (I think I can handle something more substantial now.) I've got it slated in for one of the geocache tasks.

For my audiobook read, I'll start Staked. It's for my new release challenge.

message 500: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19223 comments Janice - What did you think if Nefertiti's Heart? I've had it on my TBR for a while now.
